Holy shit, that was a bloody start or more like a nightmare.

A pretty thrilling episode imo. We got some nice music and action in space. I kinda feel bad for the doctors in this as they have to treat the injured, which there is a load of. Daryl also gets badly hurt, ouch.

Loved the usage of the opera-like music.

I have no idea how Daryl's going to fight Gundam with that armament on Psycho Zaku. I mean, it's not even armored or has beam weapons.

Great music, beautiful drawings and good animation.

Quite shocked about this psycho thing and the scientist mentality. Such a technology is not worth it.
Based on Daryl's reminiscence, he was a part of the Earth invasion forces. Backgrounds are lightly introduced for both characters, but I don't think I will come to like one of them, due to the shortness of this project. I also think there is too much action for the length, the mandatory battle of the episode makes it appear a bit empty.

Freakin' love this series

The flashbacks were short, but effective. That running sequence was just beautiful, really great development for Daryl, done in a short time, but really worked for the time frame they were given. Amazing animation as always.

If I was given a tonne of money to make a Gundam series I would probably just remake this lol. It's like they looked in my head and made the Gundam I always wanted to see,

Love the Jazz and the Mobile Suits battle, they're pretty exciting to see and hear.

Daryl got guts...using an outdated Zaku I to battle a Gundam....and still alive, I didn't know Zaku I's cracker grenade was actually packs a punch.

Now Daryl fuses with the Red Zaku, definitely would be very difficult to defeat.

This anime really is bloody i like it , damn the poor guy lost 2 legs then lost his left arm and just when he realised only his right arm remained they cut it . Daryl is pretty likable but it's no use cheering for him i'm sure he'll get destroyed by Io anyway .
Again , amazing OST and Animation

I'm in love with this show...

In two episodes it has depicted all the perils combatant have to go through in a war...

It also has done so far a splendid job portraying emotions; what are the things that you are willing to sacrifice for revenge? Your humanity, pride, love or yourself?

It is a shame that this ONA is only 4 episodes, I want more!

poor kid, they just chopped of his last remaining limb less than 24 hours after he lost his second to the last limb.

the saddest thing is that they're all doing it in vain because Gundam = Justice.
they're not going to beat the side with the Gundam's no matter how many young soldiers they mangle up and turn into cyborgs.

awww sheeeit that was some top tier gundam.

they managed to cut out a lot of content without losing narrative coherence, which is cool. I think, although sourcefags might complain that what they did is no substitute for the exposition required for some of the backstory, it's better to just cut that shit out and focus a bit more on the action. The way they've done it so far, the anime is still standalone but at the same time if you want more narrative depth and characterization, the manga remains a valid option.

Can't handle all that Gundam goodness this week: that good ol' classic UC feel can never disappoint.

Felt terrible for Daryl perhaps even moreso for Karla-chan, who's visibly chosen the wrong line of work. Don't know about everybody else, but for an asshole such as Io, that little scene with him being soft and asking his blue-haired glasses-wearing Armin copycat comrade a tissue was hilariously cute. I also found myself looking forward to seeing more of Io's weak ass girlfriend and the action, of course, was spectacular. I was originally planning on watching this solely for the pretty visuals and the UC Gundam factor, but I'm glad it finally got me hooked (at least enough for me to actually start giving a shit about any of the characters).

I'm still having very mixed feelings about the music, which is a bit of a problem when you consider the role it seems to play in the story and the fact that it's a key element to both Daryl and Io's characterization (and future development).
But in all honesty, I'm more than willing to give it a free pass if everything else keeps this level of quality for the next episodes.

It's just criminal that something like Aldnoah Zero with it's totally lacking sense of purpose would be so much more watched than this which has it's points down pretty much already and really shows what can be done with completely 2D animated mecha/sci-fi anime. I doubt it'd be any more watched even if it wasn't an OVA, just something about the Gundam name puts people off yet Aldnoah is okay to watch I guess.

Wow, this episode was pretty awesome. I'm starting to not mind too much about the mere four episode count, since they've been devoting as much time as they can to high-budget and visually gorgeous action sequences (besides the character backgrounds this episode).

Speaking of which... I gotta feel very sympathetic for this Zeon sniper. To lose all your limbs...

And also the frantic and intense fear of the soldiers in that battle was captured great as well. Not only is this great fanservice to Gundam fans with the battles, but I think it's capturing the fear and horror of war great too.

An eight out of ten so far.

Those 18 minutes sure flew by quickly...

It's amazing how much detail and care Sunrise puts in their UC shows these days, especially compared to their non-UC projects (I guess being OVAs helps).

Not sure what the bright flash that saved Daryl was all about though.

Nah, I pretty much guarantee it won't ever get big on this site. There are exceptions but Gundam is not popular in MAL's community.

Well it'll never be big, per se, the Gundam title carries too much of an intimidating entry barrier to the uninitiated.

What I'm saying is, a lot of the UCfags who would love this shit haven't gotten around to watching it.

Or at the very least, I know a bunch of UCfags who are waiting to marathon it and as pretty much the only one within my circle of friends who is watching it, I have nobody to circlejerk it with.

But for something of this nature, you wouldn't expect more than maybe 20-30k members to watch it (that's what Unicorn has) and Thunderbolt is nowhere near even that.

This series is too gory and gritty for me. I really don't like that kinda stuff at all. I never really cared much for jazz (i don't hate it, but i don't really like it that much either), and i despise the character designs in this series. I found the first episode to be decent.

But by god, this episode was AMAZING. It has so many things i hate or don't care about, but the things in it that i like in it are done so amazingly well. How menacing the Gundam is, how both sides are shown to have their fair share of decent guys and crazy evil guys (and even then, that's very subjective), how the combat is animated (that fight sequence with the Zaku I in the colony at the beginning was one of the greatest mech fight scenes i have ever seen), it's all just so great! I didn't put much faith in the first episode, but this one has swayed me. I just wish this was an actual full-lenght TV series, so we could have more time to flesh out the characters, but it's still very much enjoyable.

AFAIK this is a thing specific to Thunderbolt, at least in terms of anime I have not seen it or heard it mentioned in any other UC series. In Thunderbolt, one division called" Living Dead Division" has a bunch of war amputees, so they decide to develop a system in which they can connect directly to their machines which helps them operate as snipers.

Damn, the episode felt so surreal. Starting off with a bloody flashback, followed by the testing of that experimental Zaku (which seemingly enabled Lorenz to regain something he had lost long ago) and finishing with a tragedy. I must admit I do adore the series, 18 minutes per episode does not feel that much, however, it still manages to come across in such a striking manner. The dynamic duo is evolving is a desirable manner as well.

Mobile Suit porn was off the charts as well, not to mention the superb background music.

It's been a while since I watched the first episode... took a few minutes to recall where we left off.

Almost non-stop action. I like how this is escalating. It's harsh what Zeon is doing to keep their soldiers going, but that's war.

The narrative also affects time for the richness of events that take place, the weather is always good even if exploited, but two or three situations make it really enjoyable and also sad to see. The music as well as the story is another very important element in this series, and even this time you can not help but be fascinated. The story of this anime series, demonstrates how in certain situations, certain individuals forget their humanity even if others are just cowards regardless of the situation. I hope that the scientist with glasses, Sexton, must make a cruel death, that bastard.

Zeon is pretty desperate. Not only they manage to "re-use" disabled soldiers, but they manage to re-use Johnny Ridden's color scheme.

Haven't had the opportunity to read the manga though. Was that color scheme deliberate? Or had any connections to Johnny at all? Or they were just "Why the hell not"?

This episode was incredible!!!
The music mark the rythm of the plot, but the dark next to the bloody and the two characters suffering makes the best scene, the best episode, to enjoy and don´t forget, because this is the war, the real war, misery!!!

The young soldier don´t have the legs.... loose one arm between the Gundam... and loose the scond arm for can drive a new experimental mobile armor...very, very cruel :/

I don't understand why the flash grenade ended that fight. Sure his gundam was damaged, but was that really the reason he had to retreat? Or did he lose him? I guess it doesn't matter that much, but... well whatever, it was still a great episode.
