but... Why didn't the snipers just kill Io when he took over?

It seemed like they make it clear that the other snipers did not have a direct view or angle on the position.

Since the snipers were in different locations or set into niches throughout the colony they wouldn't be able to fire on one another.
Which I assume is because they are primarily aiming outwards away from the former colony towards the direction of the expected positions of the incoming enemy.

To the person who asked if Darryl will get a gundam, i doubt it (i have not read the manga, but going on the gunpla kits from thunderbolt) he's prolly going to get the "Psycho" Zaku II High Mobility, it's the dark red.

yhfxirai: well yes, you can. Thou you should get some basic knowledge about beginning of war. Or wait for every "Gundam The Origin" episode.

Anyway it's a good start. Finally Gundam without annoying brats, who goes like "Ohh God, war is so horrible. I don't want this". And they kill everyone anyway, especially Zaku.
But I think it's too fast. Did they want to tell whole story (at least space thunderbolt) in 4 ep?

Yeah, I'd say so. I don't even think this series will go into anything specific, as long as you know 2 sides are in a war (Zeon and Federation) then you should be good for Thunderbolt.

I've always enjoyed these OVA's a lot more than most of the main series (which other than a few select episodes, are merely serviceable for the most part once you get past the big warring robots factor) . War in the Pocket, 8th MS Team and now Thunderbolt seem to be the ones that are most free to break out of the same old formula that gets recycled every new incarnation.

Only thing I hate is that this will only last 4 episodes :(

The only thing that can be anticipated to see is how much personal style can Kou Matsuo can squeeze into this little anime, he's probably not going to have the same control he had in Kure-nai, but the source material and his style don't feel like they are mutually exclusive, but are complementary.

Art and animation was really good. Best scene was that POV reaction of that zaku getting annihilated by Io.

Looks interesting, too bad it's so short and only going to have 4 episodes. Seeing as manga is still ongoing, this is going to show only a small part of the story. Perhaps they could make more if it was a full series. Might be unlikely though, as there was no new UC series since Victory, besides OVAs.

While this episode certainly passes the low bar that Gundam series have been setting as of late, it most certainly didn't do the manga justice.

Far too much cut content. Everything was rushed and had little to no impact. When I first read the chapter in which the Gundam was revealed I thought to myself "YES, this is what UC should feel like". The way the author built up to it, and presented it, really conveyed the fact that the RX-78 is a giant robot designed to kill (and kill it did), and that it's the sole reason the Zeon are losing the war. When I saw it adapted in the anime I thought "Already?" and "I could have sworn this was more awesome". The manga reveal practically sent shivers down my spine, while the anime reveal made me instantly drop any thoughts of introducing my girlfriend to the series.

After the episode, I went back and re-read some of the manga and realized that there was a whole bunch of content cut, and that the series is being released solely as a platform to sell more Thunderbolt Gunpla.

Great! *_*

Great drawings and excellent soundtrack, narration raw and bloody abbasanza, plus there's so much destruction, not missing anything because the feelings and intrigue, of various generates, are present in the plot. Do not wait to savor the next episode.

Great art style for both the characters and mecha. I really appreciate all the rough edges.

Purchased 2 HGs from this series earlier in the year before this was announced. Master Grades coming soon in 2016

The animation quality was also amazing. Io makes such a great impression to me - dat guy, wow.

I got a bit sad seeing this is planned to be a 4-episode-thing only.

Quite an antagonistic main character, Ensign Fleming, that is. A jazz-loving ruthless bad-ass. I'm definitely jumping on the hype train, the soundtrack, animation and mecha fights alone are well worth following the series.

Some things like the Federation crew talking about their home being destroyed won't make as much sense or carry the same kind of weight if you don't know the backstory of the Battle of Loum

The art reminds me of Gundam previous show like Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory and Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team also the art is similar, reminded me of the 90's art for example movies like Super Dimensional Fortress Macross II: Lovers Again...

Now on to this episode I like that we character that are physically disable but with the help of technology (prosthetics)and strong will power (by what the main character said he was in pain) they are able to continue serve, that tells you a lot (character building). Nice music selection from both sides Earth Federation & Zeon is a nice contrast reminded me of Cowboy Bebop (music was integral part of the plot) typical Gundam politics, hints of romance, both sides have scumbags & good guys and the main topic that wars is no fun at all (both sides have losses and share painful memories).

Before I conclude that last PV of the Gundam dismantling that Zaku and the pilot reaction was delish!

It seems kinda weird for the Federation to already have had such an advanced Gundam in UC 0079. The same year Amuro was piloting RX-78-2. Or am I remembering RX-78-2 a lot weaker than it was?

So far the thing seems interesting, especially with Daryl's side & Io's side being shown one after another, enabling the audience to get to know both sides :)

I like the jazz so much! The music really adds in emotions to the show and the void when being in space is very impressive with the lone singing voice. The battle between mobile suits look thrilling, and the hijacking part is surprising because I'm trying to put face to the mobile suits/fighting style during the episode.

Not a fan of the art style, but that's my only complaint. I loved the first episode, I'm currently in the middle of ZZ, so seeing UC stuff animated with today's technology is really, really cool. I'm looking forward to the next episode!

I thought that was kinda weird too. Maybe that'll get explained later on...? Even if it is weaker than RX-78-2, it looks a lot more complex in comparison

The RX-78-2 was really powerful. It's beam rifle had the power of a battleship.

As for this Gundam, it seems to be a heavy armor type and just has parts that make it more powerful (like those propellant tanks as boosters).

I didn't really mean in terms of raw power, I meant advanced in terms of maneuverability, agility, and stuff like that. I know in real life, we can just chalk it up to improvements in animation techniques, but in series canon, the RX-78-2 seemed to be a lot more stiff and robotic in movements and I was wondering how they would have mobile suits that can move so fluidly and seamlessly in the same year.

Oh yeah, that's what I meant by the propellant tanks on the back. I just noticed there's a picture that shows the back and the backpack like addon that holds the shields. This addon has a lot of boosters on it, which is probably why the Gundam is so fast:
