And Mana will need to get back his memory too... |

Hi, I'm new here, so nice to meet you all. I literally squealed in joy when I saw D.Gray-man new chapter, even my neighbours woke up from their beauty sleep. A really big twist, I like it. Now, everyone had given a lot of theory about this twist. The only theory that made sense to me is that Mana and Earl are separate being, just like all other Noahs. But does it mean that Earl can manifest outside his human form? |

Exterria said: I don't understand anymore lol. The Earl is not the earl but mana. How? Wasn't Mana become an Akuma right before the Earl at the beginning? Is it a plot hole or will we get an explanation next chapter? Allen has Nea's memories. Nea and Mana are twins but when they were together they were known as the Earl... Damn it some twisted shit is going on o.o well the art style is really awesome! I just reread whole series and it's a lot less confusing then when I was reading it only when new chapter was released with all those huge hiatuses. What I could tell from it after rereading it all. 1. The current earl is mana. Mana is nea's brother. In past lives(noah are reincarnated) mana and nea were one person - the earl. Current earl has somehow lost his memories of being mana, most likely has something to do with why/ the situation surrounding nea's turning on the noah and the 2nd war cross talked about. 2. Allen's memories aren't correct, he is actually 35+ years old yet doesn't have any memory of that suggesting his memories aren't quite fully right. Nea says something to timcampy about helping allen to remember before he is completely lost. The memory coudl be more metaphoric to what actually happened or it could be downright wrong and will most likely be explained later on as his true memories and past are revealed. 3. I think they were the earl in a past life, they were 1 person in their past life. It's like if two humans awoke as road at once, and I speculate that they each got two unique pieces of the past earl, just as an example, 1 the good of the past earl and 1 the bad side. |

14noah said: The Millennium Earl being Mana and Nea was very much surprising and confusing but it explains why the 14th is technically not supposed to exist. Their are 13 Noahs but the Millennium Earl got separated into 2 being. My theory is that the Millennium Earl had the mission to deliver 'God wrath' thus eradicate humanity however he felt lonely and end up felling in love with Katerina or something. As a result of being conflicted, he was separated thus 'Mana' took the role of the Millennium willing to destroy humanity and 'Nea' took another different path. The only thing that is odd is the akuma scene with Allen so maybe the 'Mana' that Allen always knew was in fact Nea or that scene was just a memory manipulation. After rereading the entire series it was actually heavily hinted a lot that mana was the earl. I suggest everyone rereads it, a lot less confusing when you read it all through quickly where every piece is still fresh. Also I like your theory although personally I think the noah were once good, something happened 35 years ago that caused nea to turn on them and for mana to "go mad, go insane, forget everything and become a puppet of destruction" as nea puts it and the true evil here is an unknown 3rd party that's done something to the noah and infiltrated the church. |

RandomTopic said: Hello everyone. I registered an account to discuss this chapter. I think I can explain what is happening, after thinking about it quite a bit. The first Noah, the Millenium Earl (true name Adam) has been around for 7,000 years with the mission/raison d'etre of destroying humanity. At the start of time, the Earl battled the Heart of Innocence (or its users) and won, wiping out humanity at the time, but for some reason also creating a new generation of humans descended from the 13 Noah. At some point, the Millennium Earl briefly came to question his purpose or mission (perhaps after meeting Katerina), and decided to disappear by fragmenting his consciousness into two main parts - Mana and Nea. This bumped the total number of Noah in existence from the traditional 13 to a total of 14. Mana and Nea were raised by Katerina as humans, but at some point after coming of age, Nea's Noah side awoke and he realized who he was. At this point the original essence of the Millennium Earl (the mission to purge humanity) re-emerged to lead the Noah, which now included Nea. (You can argue that this brings the total number of Noah to 15 if you want to include Mana, Nea, and the Earl, but Mana's Noah side/half of the Earl never woke up so you had 14 still). Nea as the 14th Noah decides to rebel against the system, wiping out all the Noah but Road (with whom he had a special relationship), and trying to kill the essence of the original Earl in order to became the new Earl and do what he wants instead. They keep failing, so Nea and Mana (still human) go on the run while fighting the Earl. Eventually Mana screws up somehow, and the Earl finally manages to kill his rebellious Nea fragment, and Katerina also gets killed in the process. Whether or not the Earl reveals Mana's true origins at the time, in any case Mana is driven insane by the whole process and goes on the run and becomes a crazy circus clown. Allen, a human friend of Nea's (perhaps an exorcist already, perhaps not), finds Nea dying and offers to sacrifice himself by letting Nea eventually resurrect within Allen's body. Nea imbeds himself in Allen, causing Allen to eventually lose all his memories and regress in age until becoming a child before growing older again (probably to mirror Nea being reborn slowly). General Cross also made some sort of deal with Nea - it is implied that Cross rationalized "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" and was an ally of Nea's since Nea was fighting the essence of the Millenium Earl. Cross knows about the deal between Allen and Nea (maybe he was even there at the time). By fate, Allen/Nea runs into crazy-Mana the clown, who grows fond of Allen/Nea and begins raising him...either out of instinct or because he really knows Allen is also Nea, or some combination of both factors. When human Mana finally dies, the Earl shows up and tricks Allen (not knowing Nea is hiding inside Allen) into resurrecting Mana as an Akuma/Noah. To the Earl's surprise, Allen has innocence inside him as an exorcist and slays Mana. The Earl lets Allen live out of curiosity (though later it's revealed that he let him live because on some level he sensed Nea inside Allen without realizing it). In any case, Mana finally being killed out of his human form and turned into Akuma lets the essence of the Earl transfer Mana back into his Noah origins, thus letting the Earl merge back with his Mana fragment. The human side of Mana loses all his memories and just becomes a walking vessel for the Earl fragment, his original progenitor. Eventually everyone comes to realize that Nea was sneaky and is growing inside Allen. What the Heart/the Apocalypse Innocence protector think about all this is kind of wrapped in mystery, but they seem to want to kill all Noah, meaning the 14th and the Earl both (the 14th is as scary as the Earl because the 14th can also pilot the Ark). The general consensus is that Nea really threw everyone (including himself) for a real loop by not only finding a way to become reincarnated, but by choosing to reincarnate inside the body of one of the Noah's enemies, a born Exorcist who fights for the Black Order. The Earl was already driven somewhat crazy 35 years ago due to being betrayed by his Nea fragment and being forced to kill part of himself (and maybe getting hurt by Nea during the fight too). He becomes more crazy after re-absorbing Mana, and then goes REALLY crazy when he realizes Nea is coming back, which triggers the dormant Mana to struggle to emerge to be re-united with Nea. In the most recent chapter, being re-united finally causes Mana to come out of the Earl essence's shell for a moment, after which Nea (still occupying Allen) reveals the whole backstory. So the Earl and Mana have a messy merged/split personality due to the Earl forcibly re-merging with his Mana fragment but being forced to keep part of Mana's personality, whereas Nea and Allen have a messy merged/split personality because the original Allen allowed Nea to reincarnate himself inside Allen, but this also gave birth to a new, younger Allen who grew up a second time from scratch and developed his own personality as an orphan and an exorcist. So both lead characters have duality, but for different reasons. Both characters have a human side and a Noah side (Nea is technically also part of the Earl, but is distinct as the 14th Noah because he awoke on his own and was killed, rather than being merged back into the Earl like Mana). Ta-da! Very interesting and I think it's probably pretty close although I don't believe mana being turned into an akuma actually happened which throws some of this off a little. So other then a few things I agree with you. |

A blast from the past here cause I'm too emotional over the fate of poor Allen. I dunno but I always thought that the dude who claimed that he would protect Nea's memory wasn't Allen. I mean, he was shown to have light coloured hair, but Allen originally had brown hair. I thought it could've been Cross but it may be highly unlikely. I saw one post somewhere where his name could've been Allen as well, which was why Mana called Allen, "Allen". But I don't think that's the case. Mana called him "Allen" out of delirium from his head wounds when "Red" whacked him over the head. And now to the actual chapter. THAT WAS BLOODY BRILLIANT yeh it seems a bit rushed to increase tensions but if Hoshino-san has a way to unravel all this mystery I'm crowning her the best mangaka ever. You know what they say, quality over quantity. I'd rather good quality manga over many updates per year. :) |

I am so happy that this manga is back up and... stuttering along. It's too bad to hear that we can't rely on even a monthly update. This is my second favorite manga, ever, and I feel like it never gets the recognition it deserves because of all the hiccups along the way. It would be great if they redid the anime (and I do hope they just redo it, season 1 had so many useless episodes that seemed to only be there to take up space, but didn't ultimately add anything, not even complexity to the characters or their relationships, in my opinion). I'm quite intrigued with this new mystery. I've been going over it in my head, trying to piece together clues, but I'm still really lost on the Mana/Neah, Earl/Allen front. For simplicity, I've tried to separate the... four narratives of what has occurred. 1) Allen Walker's: Presumably, maybe at 8-10 years old he meets 'Mana', a traveling clown who names him Allen, and takes him in. Mana creates a language with Allen, which later turns out to be the notes to control the Ark. Mana is hit by a carriage, and dies. The Earl shows up, offers Allen the chance to bring Mana back, Allen does, Mana is mad, then Mana curses Allen with an eye that seems to be similar to Akuma weaponry in some way. It also evolves, and if one recalls the Crowley chapters, seems to have some memory or sentience associated with Mana. Mana is killed by Allen's innocence. The memory seems to stop there, although we find out that Earl doesn't kill Allen at this time. 2) Cross Marian's: Cross doesn't give us many concrete memories, but we do know that he took care of Allen for three (?) years after this. He clearly comes to care for him, but knows even as he takes him in that Allen holds the 14ths memories. Further, it seems he has been watching Allen before this. When revealing the cryptic information to Allen, predicting that Allen will have to kill someone he loves, Allen asks him if Mana ever really loved him. Cross reluctantly seems to tell Allen that Mana lost it after the 14ths death, and began to act strangely. He tells him that he doesn't know if Mana even remembered who the 14th was. We also learn that there is a hidden side to this war, that Mana and Nea were brothers, and that the two of them were on the run from the Earl for some time. At one point, he ruminates over the fact that Allen's name was once Red, and that Mana gave Allen the name Allen. 3) Nea D. Campbell: Nea's memories come in bits and pieces. Based off of his interpretation of the events, we know some things. He says that Mana and he were born of the Earl, asexually, I guess, and were twins. A woman takes them in, their adoptive mother, and raises them. We miss the majority of their childhood, but it is apparent that they were very close. Nea confesses that he is the Noah that will destroy everything, and wants revenge on the Earl, and to take over the role of the Earl. He has a hazy memory of a man promising to protect his memories, who looks like Allen, but is confused as to why Allen would have regressed into his youth, only to start aging again. He claims that the Earl is his brother, Mana, that he was killed by Mana, and that Mana's memories have been altered. His vengeful behavior seems to dissipate when Earl/Mana reaches out for him. We have scenes, mostly unexplained, of their mother's death, by the field and trees, as well as... I believe it is Mana's crying face (sometimes its hard for me to tell... the Noahs are all very similar looking to me, and jumping around in the timeline doesn't help). Presumably, Nea died 35 years ago, killed by the Earl, but Mana doesn't appear as the Earl in any of Nea's memories. Earl's: The Earl's memories are a little more mysterious. We get no really first person memories from him, just vague recollections. He seems confused as to why he didn't kill Allen back in the graveyard initially also, but doesn't go into depth about what happened. He claims that the 14th betrayed all of the Noah. He claims that the 14th tried to kill him, but that the Earl killed him instead (or implies it?). He obviously longs for the 14th, but has no prevailing opinion or memory of Allen besides that he is a container for the 14th. The reason why I lay these facts out is because I'm trying to get a working theory by trying to see how they overlap. Allen and the Earl's stories seem to overlap just fine, their versions (clearly altered, because Allen has no recollection of implanting the Nea's memories, and the Earl clearly has forgotten much of their narrative) work together. Cross reveals very little, but based off of how close he seems to be to Nea, and his cryptic clues, it would seem that Cross and Nea's versions also match up. So then, it must be decided if one version is right, while the other is wrong, or if all versions have been a little screwed up due to something. The biggest inconsistency to me is the timeline for Earl/Mana's relationship with Allen. Akuma were obviously being created before Mana's accident, since the Black Order actively had exorcists out and about. Presumably, the Earl must be alive to create them. This would imply that the Earl is living, although I believe only Road's existence to witness this is confirmed. BUT, at the same time Mana is raising Allen, revealing interesting little bits of information to, like the Ark note code. Mana dies, and the Earl reveals himself to Allen. Conceivably, we could maybe make an argument for split personalities due to insanity, and the Earl's memory no longer recognizing his adoptive son after his human side's 'death'. The problem with this, is that Allen calls Mana back. He calls Mana back, a soul I believe could only be Mana, based off of the dialogue, who curses him in a way that give him an advantage for the job he wishes to do, and is destined to do. I cannot see how Akuma Mana and Earl Mana could coexist. Cross asserts that Mana lost it after Nea's death, and Allen assumes that Cross is talking about the clown, but it could be possible that he is talking about the Earl, giving credence for whatever memories have been damaged, according to Nea. But, this still doesn't explain who it was that was Allen's Mana. It calls into question whether Allen's Mana ever even existed. I would be inclined to say that Allen created a figment of his imagination, except that the eye exists. It had to come from somewhere, and the Earl seems to remember the same incident. I can dig that Mana and Nea were twins, but who the threat was, who Nea saw as a threat, seems to still be a mystery. We know there is a 3rd element to the war, that Innocence doesn't seem so kind afterall, but neither, let's be honest, are the Noah. We have this heart thing, that either the Apr. Cardinal is protecting on orders from the heart or of its own contorted free will. We can't say whether the heart is good or not. But the Noah are also cruel. You want to get around it, because in many ways their actions contradict each other, their 'white' sides and 'black' sides. One might make the argument that they aren't evil, that like Alma Mater their Noah selves are simply consumed over revenge against something, but that doesn't negate the breadth of their cruelty over the years. I just can't see them turning out to be the misunderstood kids. Not really. Allen seems to possibly once been Nea's ally, but then he becomes a child by the name of Red. A child with Innocence. I've once thought that Allen is the Innocence personified, like the Cardinal. It seems possible, since not once has Allen ever truly been without it. Presumably he is born with it, and even when he loses his arm, a piece embeds itself in his heart. Still, that seems a bit of a stretch. It might explain his many abilities, memory loss, and evolving sense of self. And, perhaps, Nea's disregard over destroying him. I don't know though. Sorry this post is so long, but I really want to hear other people's theories on this, since I felt completely lost by the ending of chapter 219. I'd love to hear what people think! |

finally a new chapter. It is really confusing. I can understand mana and neah are both part of original Earl (their swords is a good proof). but about allen: who he is? -a 16y old boy doomed by fate, born miserably to live a miserable painful life as pawn in innocence and noah hand only to die miserably, taken over and erased by the soul sealed inside his body. -a 35y old guy who forgotten his past about being neah reincarnation and regressed with an new personnality (our allen) and recover his true memory during this chapter. if it is first, poor poor Allen. God was a real bastard to him. I really hope our kind allen we follow since years is not definitely gone and will recover his body control to burn all black order, innocence and noah asses on the ground |

I agree with your thoughts...... But- it was new in July- we should have had at least 1 other chapter by now.... Aparently we have to wait till October for Chapter 220.... I hear she's fine now..... So, why are we having to wait around 4 months between chapters... If she was gonna make us wait this long, you'd think we'd get more pages and content each chapter. |

And idk, this is weird and all but my headcanon is Allen was a part of Adam as well. That face reminded me of Allen a bit. And back when the sword of exorcism was introduced, the scene where it was the Earl standing there with his sword? One: he has a CROWN on his left breast. Two: the sleeves are really long and floppy making it seem as if the suit was empty. I've only seen the crown where his breast pocket would be twice. The other time is on a omake where the seiyu for the Earl and Allen sit next to each other and they're good friends. The second instance with the "empty suit" was in 218 where the Earl was standing in front of a dead/dying Katerina. Floppy sleeves. And also in 219 where mana was holding Nea and the Earl was standing in front. Long floppy sleeves. Memories can be altered and manipulated so we don't actually know what is real and what isn't. I also think that when Cross says "when we met, he didn't tell me his name was Allen. I should have realized my mistake sooner." Is referring to the Allen of 35 years ago. Maybe he went by another alias and only a few people knew his name ie mana and Nea. That's my headcanon. And the only way I will think otherwise, is when Hoshino shows us what's going on. I'm actually reeaalllly excited and I hope I'm on the right direction here, that would be fantastic. |
