----------------------------------------
So after a month of waiting, I *finally* got my hands on the fifth volume of Kekkai Sensen (Amazon ran out of stock, so I wound up getting volumes 6 & 7 before volume 5). This was particularly annoying because the 5th volume kicks off with my favorite episode of the anime, Don't Forget to Forget Me. The story is pretty much untouched here, with the only real differences having White's scene replaced with a Patrick/Zapp scene. For many reasons, like the great track On My Own (which I listened on loop while reading), I prefer the anime but as always, the source is great on it's own.

The story's really touching, the relationship between Nej & Leo is definitely sweet and the moment where Leo starts crying is the highlight of the chapter (I especially like how Nightow framed it, basically giving it a two-page spread). In the anime, this episode was definitely about discrimination & while I still say that's applicable here, it's definitely isn't as strong here (feel the need to note that the anime version wasn't overbearing with it's message, which is impressive). However, reading this chapter & experiencing it for the third time, makes me realize that the amnesia "ability" is likely tied into the theme. Perhaps as a form of commentary on how violent incidents on the streets of New York (they did specifically draw a parallel to it at the beginning) can often quickly be forgotten by the public eye. Granted, I'm not particularly well-versed in New York (not that the message is exclusive to the setting) crime history but regardless, I can't help but think there's something there with how the story plays out, mainly with the differences in how his meeting with Nej goes.
