THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE. ---------------------------------------- Movie is about 90+ minutes and it was fun. We see our pirate Marika in charge of her crew. They get involved into some conflict in space as usual while Kanata becomes a key player in this movie. I feel bad for the kid because of his past though. The movie also highlights most of the other crews' roles although Marika gets most of the highlights. OST is great in this movie although some of the comedy is a bit weird. Still, I admire that Kanata kid and his spirit and resolve to fight. The ending was kinda underwhelming although I liked the theme songs they used. I also find out mecha to be kinda odd. |

Really FUN movie. The comedy was spot on IMO although it's really a compressed mash of all the goodness of the franchise in a paltry 90 minutes! Really captured the spirit of the TV season. This movie was a really good follow-up on a recurring theme in the franchise, that the universe is an ocean. It seems the use of faster-than-light travel relies on high-speed "underwater" currents and while I feel the sci-fi took a lot of liberties, it was...cool. The mecha really resembled a deep-sea diving suit while the stuff that sails on the surface; ships were just...ships! Makes sense. That thing was not a weaponised mobile suit but a deep-sea working machine. Speaking of which, so much mecha-porn and details! The visuals are just amazing as usual! Satelight is really top-notch at the visuals which is no surprise as they also did the mecha-gasm Macross F. The holographic display visuals were just anally carefully constructed. Even sequences which had split second appearances, like in the OP where they displayed Marika's trajectory to the Bentenmaru...amazing. So many comedic screens that suit the show so much as well! Another thing this show does so well is how the "battles" are choreographed. Some really out-of-the box sequence of events. Especially the role of the Odette II and Barbarossa...seriously laughed my ass off at all the creative novelty. I sometimes think Satelight is totally messing around having FUN while making this outrageous series. Speaking of which, tasteful fanservice. http://i.imgur.com/hCxRxEp.jpg (because I already used up the 1 image per post rule) |

Just going to write my own opinions on the movie, read at your own discretion. I honestly have to say that I'm dissapointed, it really didn't feel like the mouretsu universe that I came to love in the TV series. Between the flying talking robots (yes there were cyborgs, w/e), the extra fanservice that was hardly there during the tv series, the lack of chiaki and ririka, the outdated gundam spacesuits in stark contrast to the ones in the tv series, and last but not least, a giant mecha? Also, of major note, there were ZERO space battles, unless you count the gundam "fight". At least for me, I could tell that this movie was made for pure fanservice, as it is not a "sequel" as MAL lists it, but more of a spinoff or sidestory. I've been reading the novels, and nowhere in them as of volume 10 is there this movie's story. The abyss of hyperspace manga was recently created for the purpose of the movie. Just kind of sad that they made a movie and rushed a new plot rather than having the movie cover the next novel. All-in-all, I felt like the plot suffered and just didn't feel like the TV series at all while not wrapping up many of the questions presented. I mean if any of you have/had read the novels about the imperial pirates... you'd wish this movie was based on that instead too, lol. Smh. If I were to compare this movie to its main series, I would compare it to To aru majutsu no index and to aru kagaku no railgun. Same universe, same characters, two completely different beasts. 5/10 for the nostalgia. Canders out. |

Undim, I feel you, some of the main series was anime original content. Just to reiterate my point, the movie just feels so foreign compared to the TV series. To further this point, the adapted form http://myanimelist.net/manga/68781/Mouretsu_Pirates:_Abyss_of_Hyperspace_-_Akuu_no_Shinen as well as the movie http://myanimelist.net/anime/14817/Mouretsu_Pirates:_Abyss_of_Hyperspace were both written by the anime director, not the novel author. This is also why the movie is a spinoff, rather than a sequel, maybe some staff can change it (the manga lists it as a side story). For example, the TV series is based off of the novels (miniskirt pirates), while the movie is based off of a spinioff or side story manga created by the anime director You can't just remove the original material that 3/4 of the TV series was based on and expect maintain the spirit of the novels/characters/world/TV series. For example, a lot of the more humorous scenes revolved around the chemistry between Chiaki and Marika, but we hardly got to see Chiaki period. Why completely remove the formula that made the TV series work? They even failed to include elements from the anime only episodes, such as space fights. There were ZERO. It makes no sense. I just felt like the movie lost the spirit of the series and suffered respectively. Too many things were changed or left out to make it feel like the same universe e.g., giant mecha, outdated space suits, no space fights, no aftermath of imperial pirates invasion, extra fanservice, etc. Just my opinion though, not trying to offend anyone. |

Not a bad movie although the robot at the end feel kinda out of place. I don't mind the fan service. Somehow I like the TV series a little more than the movie. |

Yeah, I agree with pretty much all of this (I haven't read the novels, otherwise I'd agree completely). Honestly, it felt like it was more about that stupid Kanata kid than Marika and co. (some of whom were reduced to mere cameo status). The whole thing felt lackluster, right up until the very end which was really annoying. I absolutely hated how everyone was acting like Kanata did some amazing, heroic thing when literally all he had to do was sit in a machine someone else spent an entire lifetime building and then say something along the lines of "ok, go ahead and do your thing." smh. |

(Hyper) Space looks great, and it's nice to see the cast, but definitely, the film lacks a heart in direction and doesn't quite capture the thrill of the series. Definitely worth the watch, but for its run-time, it wasn't at all bodacious. |

This movie….ugh. It maintained most of the aspects of the show that I remember, like lots of complicated artwork being spammed on screen every few seconds with data infographics, holograms, and detailed depictions of food. Also the dialogue was just as abusive as I remember, with lots of pseudo-scientific hobknobbery being blown into our faces with nearly every discussion that takes place. Oh no they did not left up about that. But lack of Chiaki, lack of Ririka, and wtf about Kanata. ::spoilers:: This kid was underdeveloped, the theme was half-cocked and frankly I didnt get what the big deal was about what they were going on about *choosing your own way* thing, he didnt do anything except take the future handed to him on a silver platter by pops and piloted Giant Robo into the center of the universe….talk about grandiose fantasies lol. Oh and the theme song was lame as crap. Insert song was kind of silly too but thankfully it lasted just a short while. This kind of felt like just a few episodes arc of Mouretsu. It didnt quite mesh as a great dramatic or intense film or anything. It just didnt come together, imo….dont know what they were trying to get at with this. Yea Kanata is a super hero and going on a journey now, and Marika is a pirate and a high school student. Go us! Lol Mouretsu I love you and hate you simultaneously. |

Ehhhh. Super impressed with the sound design and of course the production value is good. The story though is just not very desirable. I wasn't enthralled with the series so I guess it's reasonable that this movie didn't do it for me either. |

The movie lacks a lot of things that made the TV show enjoyable. Kanata is a lame protagonist. Chiaki doesn't appear much. The thing I don't like the most is how they thought it'd be a good idea to throw a new character in the mix, make that character MC, and reduce the roles of the other main characters. That just didn't work for me. |

It was enjoyable enough but there were some loose-ends that weren't tied up and the change in character design from the series, the faces mostly, turned me off a little. Still enjoyable I had given the series a 9/10; this I gave a 7. |

I like the movie. I agree, Kanata is lacking as a character, but in the end he's only a plot device. So it doesn't matter that much imo. Ririka is as laid-back and cool as ever. And there is finally a parrot, no pirate story without a parrot. The depiction of the computer virus was hilarious, cutest virus ever. Chiaki thinks, the enemy is stopping her, but it's because of her bad luck. And I laugh about people, who complain about extra fanservice. Are they really that bothered by this one short scene? |

Cute, fun and mostly enjoyable but... There were some serious lacking points compared to the show. Far too many things were skipped over and just like fast forwarded. This could have easily been a another 12 episode season with some decent filling out of the low points of the movie. Had potential but fell short of what the series had shown. |

Agreed, decent to watch, with better animation (bit different from the anime) due to being a movie, but I felt more invested in the TV series than this movie, I would had prefered the movie to focus on characters I already knew and enjoyed, rather than trying to bring a new character to the set, focusing almost solely on him and leaving the rest to a second plane... there was little Chiaki, and little of other pirates doing their things, besides at this point we want to know more about the Galatic Empire and Ironbeard. Hyperspace is a cool idea to be explored but into a single movie like Abyss of Hyperspace, felt too rushed, too much stuff thrown to the viewer without slowly fleshing out everything. Nice concept wasted on a short arc. 7.3 |

I had more fun watching this than I should have. First, dude wakes up to Marika's cleavage. Then he lays down to try to get a view up that loli's dress. I must comment that she was cuter with her hair in a ponytail. Touch the X as the bottom of hyperspace... what could possibly go wrong? We don't even consider that something could go wrong. A big energy wave crosses the entire GALAXY destroying it and it's a good thing. 6/10 (above average) I enjoyed it more than the series. |

This was a one big farce and the opening song was so bad. They could have done better. I think they depended too much in the cute girls. |

Movie was good, but really felt like a long filler. Nice to see the cast a bit older! Even Marika, being a 17 year old. She looks more mature!! I love her new outfit in red! Much better and more stylized than her default one. Even though it's a sequel and it does take place after Jenny's graduation. Was hoping to see more of the older characters as well as Quartz. This one of the very few Anime that actually takes place on Space and Adventure nowadays. Shame we really don't get these kind of Anime and more on the Mech side if we were to get one. I give it around 7-8. I hope I can discover more shows like this :) Another Anime I may check out is Sora wo Kakeru Shoujo https://myanimelist.net/anime/5307/Sora_wo_Kakeru_Shoujo Hope it's good as well! |
