let's get this started. First off, hi! and thank you for browsing through my profile. It's not a very flashy one and i'm not much of a reviewer only having done a select few, there isn't much reason to come this way so for that i thank you.
So about me, my online name is shiroyuki, there's nothing special about the name i just kind of liked it. I am an anime fan all the way from South Africa (that's the country at the very bottom of Africa. I feel stupid having to say this, but people have legitimately asked me this before). While on the topic of stupid things, we don't ride on elephants wearing leopard skin clothing keeping pet lions in our houses made of rubble <-- this is a common misconception.
moving on... as of the time of this writing, i'm 27 years old. i first got into anime in 2000 when i first did research about a new series that was airing on TV called yu-gi-oh!. That was the rabbit hole that lead me to find out how many of my favourite childhood series were actually anime like knights of the zodiac (saint seiya), speed racer, dragon ball, dragon ball Z, metabots, pokemon, digimon, duel masters and so on that rotated in TV schedules at the time.
having discovered the wonderful world of anime, i wanted to see as many as i could but this was no easy task, i didn't own a desktop pc or laptop of my own and i didn't have uncapped Wi-Fi (I still don't) so the only option i had was downloading 3gp quality anime (mostly dubbed) on my motorola v360 and later my samsung e250 from places like vuclip. Using this method, i watched many different anime like the digimon anime, pokemon, ghost hunt, ah! my goddess, serial experiments lain and so on. basically watching many anime series from the early to mid 2000s.
my love for anime fostered from this point onward and in 2014 when i finally got a capped Wi-Fi plan of 5GB monthly (which was a god send to me honestly) i was finally able to move away from the "3gp" era of watching anime and straight into the glory that was 360p mp4 video files of which there were no shortage of sites to get anime. From that point onward I watched as many series as i possibly could given time constraints, my weekends especially were exclusively for watching anime, normally 12 hours on fridays and saturdays and about 10 or so on sundays.
random "fun" fact 2014 was the first time i ever saw any video in HD and it was so amazing! it was episode 06 of an anime called "No Game No Life" which given the nature of the anime and it's animation style I feel like it was fitting that that was the first HD thing i ever saw.
anyways, i spent about 2 years or so watching anime in 360p, which i know might be cringe worthy for some people, but clearly I was never much of a stickler for quality, so it was good enough for me. Once i could reliably watch anime in a good enough quality where i could read subs, I almost exclusively started watching subs.
Let me preface this by saying i have nothing against dubs, and i still watch things like pokemon dubbed however at the end of the day i just love the way the japanese language sounds along with all of the intricacies which just can't be replicated by english voice actors. because of this and just generally bad voice acting, dubs always seemed inferior, it's just the way it is. now i'm not saying that all subs are the best and all dubs are inferior and that we should just be bowing down to our subbed overlords, but generally they (subs) are just better to chill out and watch anime with
after watching anime like that for a little while, i had finally moved up in the world in early 2017 with a 40GB monthly Wi-Fi plan which is what i'm currently still on as of February 2020. in early 2017, i was put on to "mini encodes" which was my move from 360p mp4 to 720p mkv videos that were heavily encoded to reduce size. again some might scoff at the quality, but like i said previously and keep this in mind, i started my anime watching career on 3gp videos, less than 144p so even heavily encoded 720p was more than enough for me. with those tiny encodes and decent quality i was able to download a lot of anime, hundreds and watch so many seasonal shows that i couldn't before. i was finally able to enjoy my anime on a level i could never do before.
this continued until 2019, at this point i started slowing down watching anime because of life, but i still watched on occasion. i also started downloading proper 480p/720p/1080p videos from web downloads and bluray encodes. i was able to get those much bigger sizes because i had slowed down watching how many anime i watched per season, down from 30+ to around 2 - 5. ultimately to maximize quality to size i settled on watching currently airing anime in 480p and downloading anime bluray's of series i really enjoyed and want to watch again in 720p/1080p if available. and currently that's how i'm watching my anime :)
So what else is there to say? hmmm... AH! so about the way i rank anime. I'm not very strict when it comes to a set of criteria i have when ranking anime, the way i rank them can be rather sporadic so if you don't know me personally it might be difficult to understand my thought process but I'll try my best to let you know. Basically depending on what kind of anime it is, I have different 'guidelines' that i use to help determine a score. for example i absolutely love gochumon wa usagi desu ka? i think it's a masterpiece [10] because of the way it makes me feel. I could be having a really bad day, and this series will never fail to make me happy by the end of it, no matter how bad my day was. likewise the series Anohana: the flower we saw that day also makes me feel incredibly sad no matter how many times i watch it and as such that's a 10 from me.
for series that are more "plot intensive" or just generally has more of a mysterious plot (like detective conan for example) i judge and score said series based on how convoluted that plot is because even plot heavy series should be understandable to the average joe and especially series based on other mediums (manga, games, light novels and so on) and shouldn't require any prior knowledge of those mediums to understand. If it's fun and understandable i generally rate it higher and likewise i rate it lower if it's not only not understandable without prior knowledge but even if you do have that knowledge if the series plot is still all over the place it get's a lower score for me generally.
(stopping for now, going to edit later if there's anything else i can think of)
I mean, the fact that the storm even reset Pikachu's level is bullshit in it of itself, and if you apply game logic to Pokemon moves, Pikachu shouldn't have known Volt Tackle since it's an egg move. Story-wise, that Snivy should've been low-leveled and Pikachu's level reset is a theory, not canon. It was still bullshit and rightfully angered a lot of people as a result.
