I had said earlier that I didn’t seem to care for the Ogami and Nangou battle, that my lack of mechanical knowledge and the obvious prediction Ten would win took away from this, that I was asking “when” not “how” Ten would win. Even then I said this was a bad mentality and I eat those words because the way he fought through this situation was glorious. The last chapter’s reckless activating of the devil’s security was phenomenal and now, to make the only logical option the one that loses through tenacity was just hardcore. We saw piece by piece as the layman Hiroyuki thought Ten was doing the wrong thing, closing off his options. However, that was so outrageous that it’s why it worked. Nangou in a rush dug his grave and Ten ran with it, he made Nangou think “there’s no way he’s waiting on this after all this time”, “it’s such a slim chance”. These were when he truly lost.

It was brilliant and it reminded me exactly of when Harada beat Hiroyuki earlier. He gave him a speech on how looking for too much meaning in discards and sticking to logic is not what gambling is, rather it’s an excuse. He played Hiroyuki in a similar way. Akagi said something akin to what Harada did with this situation, that when barely hanging on, to rely on logic is to lose ability to rely on intuition. It makes me think of Camus and the absurd, that in the world of gambling, like real life, to go by logic doesn’t make any sense at all, which fits with Fukumoto’s theory of meaning and purpose as well. As Kurosawa once said, “My life has no… coherent plot!” Suddenly gambling seems like the best thing Fukumoto could ever write about, not just because he’s amazing at exploring scenarios to their brink and exploring the human psyche, but because thematically it ties everything together. Life is a gamble and we ought to make the best of it.

I suppose it’s Hiroyuki’s time to shine! :)

I'm still loving this! And it's actually so true, it always feels like I've been played like a fiddle when I deal into these impossible single waits...

It was kind of obvious Ten was going to advance, I mean he's the eponymous character. But he still did so in an awesome way. All this manga does is make me want to gamble like a madman lol
