THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
I just wrote a paper on the 1979 Anime "Akage no Anne" so I automatically compare those two anime. Since "Konnichi wa Anne" is the prequel of "Akage no Anne" some might consider my post a spoiler so I put the story part in spoiler tags, just to be sure.

The opening is great. It has the "right feel" to it.

You could see that the designers were trying hard to catch Annes facial expressions and they succeeded most of the time. The other characters look well designed too and keep the WMT style.
The backgrounds are slightly less well drawn than in the old anime. But I can understand that in modern times, they just can't invest that much time to make the backgrounds look like oil paintings. Budgets are limited and they wouldn't be able to keep up with other anime that have "cheaper" backgrounds.
So for the art alltogether I give them a "B".

Well one episode isn't much to judge on, and honestly my japanese skills are far from really being able to analyse the plot (I watched the RAW).
I won't talk it down, I'm glad they made this anime. I don't want Anne to be forgotten. I'm just also afraid that they try too hard and mess it up.
Hopefully this anime will also get many people to watch Akage no Anne.

Well, I am reading the book, and they skipped like the first 65 pages o_O (the book began before the birth of Anne when her parents were still alive).
The content of this episode was not really in the original book. There was nothing about a brooch (or at least I don't remember), and Joanna's children were not so mean with her. I felt like watching Cinderella or Les Miserables, and I didn't have this feeling while reading the book.
And the blonde girl, Eliza, is not blonde in the novel ("milky skin and clouds of dark brown hair"), and was 15, not 17 years old. And for Anne, she was more like a mother figure than a real friend.

Oh that is interesting. So the things that don't seem to fit aren't to blame on Budge Wilson then?

I assume that the skipped pages will be told in the next few episodes as flashbacks. You see that often in anime that are based on a book or manga: They first want to introduce the characters and THEN give their past.

Too bad my paper was due to March... I would have loved to watch this anime first and also analyse it in my Akage no Anne paper...

Akage no Anne is one of my all time favorites, I can't wait to watch the prequel! I'm really hoping to see a fansub group picking it up, I wonder if it will take long... Anyway, I was very glad to see that they were faithful to Anne's physical appearance, I'm just sorry that the backgrounds won't be as outstanding as in AnA.

Well the backgrounds are surely not bad. They are still outstanding compared to other anime broadcasted nowadays!
I think non-artists might not even notice a difference. At first sign the new backgrounds look also very well drawn. But if you look closer you get the feeling that a lot was done with texture filters. Some of the filling colors seem rather "loveless", for example a tree is just the outline of a stem and the leaves, but the filling of both is done with some "blobs" of a color and a texture tool that make it look more natural. In the old anime, you can see how every stroke wad done by hand. That is just something that studios can't afford today, so I think it is ok.

Examples:
Konnichiwa Anne:

Akage no Anne:

The character design is really good though. Not only did they catch some of Anne's original facial expressions, but also improved in terms of "proportions". Akage no Anne fans might remember how bad the proportions were sometimes. One eye much bigger than the other, gigantic forehead, ...

I see what you mean, the differences are very clear. For instance, that rainbow looks terribly fake - they would never draw something like that in Akage no Anne. Even though I'm looking forward to Konnichiwa, I'm keeping my expectations low because I'm pretty sure it can't beat Isao Takahata's work. Akage no Anne is a true masterpiece, at least for me.

Yeah, AnA's character design was a bit ugly sometimes, but I never cared. I was always so touched by her words and thoughts that I wouldn't care if her hair turned green (and it did ^^).

Beautiful drawings. I was not able to make out everything that was said, but I read the novel in advance, so that is no problem.

Since this is obviously tons newer than the original, I'd expect a few nods and references to people who have read or seen it. Since it's only on episode three now I can't say for sure.

If you care but don't want to watch a 50-episode long series, reading the book would be a lot faster. (Seeing one of the many movie versions might work too, but I have no idea which are any good.)

ETA: Finally watched the episode~ this look like one of the cutest WMT series yet. It also has one of the fastest paces of any that I've seen, which I hope will encourage more people to watch it.

Tezuka's adaptation (1979) is a pack of detailed animated sequences.

The blurring bloom effect --- and other post processing filters, the imbalanced vibrancy and the comical tone in this prequel doesn't follow the original series.

And still, Bill will live on.
He will befriend the next inhabitants of the earth, beings of light who revere him as a god.
And Bill will outlive them all... for millions and millions of years...exploring, learning, living,
until the earth is swallowed beneath his feet.
Until the sun is long since gone.
Until time loses all meaning and the moment comes that he knows only the positions of the stars
and sees them whether his eyes are closed or open.
Until he forgets his name and the place where he'd once come from.
He lives and he lives until all of the lights go out.

Perspective. Anne's face is irregular. Asymmetric. She's not aesthetically beautiful as she claims. The forehead adds to this characteristic.
