MAL said:
Tohno Takaki and Shinohara Akari, two very close friends and classmates, are torn apart when Akari's family is transferred to another region of Japan due to her family's job. Despite separation, they continue to keep in touch through mail. When Takaki finds out that his family is also moving, he decides to meet with Akari one last time.

As years pass by, they continue down their own paths, their distance slowly growing wider and their contact with one another fades. Yet, they keep remembering one another and the times they have shared together, wondering if they will have the chance to meet once again.

Yep, drama. An out and out chick flick. There are chick flicks out there that will do damage to any male that watches them*. This isn't one of them. As I recall, it's a good movie.

* Steel Magnolias comes to mind.

No problem, the movie looks good even though it already feels sad.

What the hell, since when is anime in the business of being realistic. I liked the first part the most, obviously it was sad but that's life right.

7/10

I fixed the connection problem and just finished part one (26:00). This part was the reason I picked this movie. Exploring the idea of parting with close friends and possible romantic interests is something I thought would relate to the younger crowd here. It's something we all have to deal with from time to time in our lives.

I saw this a long time ago. About all I remembred was that it was good. It was beautifully animated. The backgrounds and composition were that of a talented artist. Other than the first part I had completely forgotton the story. It was horrifingly tragic in the most mundane way possible. The thing is, it didn't have to be that way if only they had made some sort of effort - any effort.

The reason I remembered the first part was that it was released solo about a year before the rest of it so I'd seen that at least one more time.

^Agreed

To bad they lost touch, I like happy endings.

I didn't understand your post at first, but i was halfway through what i thought was a weird place to put a music video, and i suddenly realized it was over... Last episode bored me into sadness.

7/10 for me. Animation was nice and i generally like what the producer...produces. But its always sad...

I'm all about this thing. I guess I got way into it and by the end I was a blubbering mess. I thought the story was well handled and not as dopey as I expected it to be. And yeah the animation blew my mind pretty hard too. Watched it with my cousin and a friend of ours and we all teared up pretty hard.

That sums it up succinctly, kemptz.

It's good to have another guy around who isn't afraid of a sad story, watchmelive.

yea this is a rather interesting bit out of a q&a Makoto Shinkai the director did.

i find it rather interesting that the movie so many people find heart breaking wasnt necessarily intended that way which is a big part of anime such things where a deep scene such as that was actually ment to be hopeful in a way came across as so sad i find that to be a statement to how subjective something like anime is and how differently it can be persevered and affect each person who views it.

you can read the rest of this q&a at http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/convention/2013/anime-expo/27

Everything is subjective in the art world. What the artist intends and what the viewer sees are two completely different things. I love it when a critic gushes over some piece, waxing eloquent over the deep meanings and agonized emotions expressed by the artist, lording it over us rubes who are to stupid to see these things only to have the artist laugh in their face.

5CPS didn't make me sad particularly. There are many people in my life I care deeply about who I have no idea where they are or what they are doing with their lives and will likely never hear from them again. I like to think they are well and happy. This is universal. Everyone could say the same thing. It's those myrids of situations that make you wonder, "If things had been a little different..." It is life and I think this movie describes this aspect of it well.

I have a plaque on my wall (Ewww!) that says, "The more you love, the more you can love and the more intensely you love. Nor is there any limit on how many you can love. If a person had time enough, he could love all of that majority who are decent and just." It's more or less the title quote from Heinlein's Time Enough for Love.

This was a pretty good movie from what I can remember (probably watched it 1-2 years ago), although I kind of think it got away in the end. But that's how most of life is, I guess.
