I don't pay any attention to the scores around here. It's just a tool. Popular is not the same as good. I wish I had more time to watch and read this stuff.
"I just hope the good lord knows, what this life is all about
'cause I'm in the same position as when I started out.
Now I know there's folk in hospitals who are far worse off than me,
Oh, but that don't mean to much when my spirit don't feel free."

Crimsons post reminded me I've been meaning to check out Blue Gender for years. Its mostly because when I used to watch DBZ on VHS there were always clips from blue gender. It does look pretty hard core though and sometimes I get bored with that.
If strength is justice, then is powerlessness a crime?

They throw in a bit of romance too which helps to vary things up.

How good is Zero In. It sounds like I would like it. Is it mostly comedy or does it get serious.

I really like Zero In so far. It starts out easy, introducing the activities of the main characters and setting up the setting (haha), and now it is starting to get into some character development, especially the female protagonist.

Yeah I think it's biggest problem is that people didn't like the 2nd half as much as the 1st and when you finish it and rate it the 2nd half is the one you have recently seen so people tended to give it a lower score than what i think it deserves. Nijuu Mensou no Musume suffers from the same problem.

Both stories have very interesting characters and have a complete and long spanning story that has kinda of an epic feel to them (more so with Allison to Lillia). I really wish that they made more animes like these but they don't seem to sell that well.

I know. Honestly when it first aired i just kinda filed it under generic colorful shounen series. It wasn't till i watched it several years later than i realized that it is actually very good with well developed characters and a plot with a little more depth than your general shounen.

I actually really enjoyed the second half. I thought Lillia and Treize were excellent new characters in addition to the other characters we already knew and loved. So by the end of the series it only helped with its final rating for me, even though the finale left a lot of unanswered questions. Overall I loved all the of the arcs and loved its theme of not only creating peace but the struggle to maintain that peace. It was very adventurous at times and at others it was funny and romantic. It's unfortunate that I cannot find this series on blu-ray because I really love Allison and Lillia.

I had to look up A&L to remember it. For some reason it reminds me of Last Exile.

Blam. Just went through my list. Some of these are not necessarily underrated but maybe somewhat forgotten or unknown. Would like to give special mention to Ima, Soko ni Iru Boku. Just get over the first mediocre episode and the rest will blow you away. BTW I'm surprised nobody ever told me about Hanada Shounen Shi, kinda had to find that one myself, probably one of the most unknown animes out there for how good it is.

Nitaboh
Wangan Midnight
Sakigake!! Cromartie Koukou
City Hunter
Mutsu Enmei Ryuu Gaiden: Shura no Toki
Slam Dunk
Speed Grapher
Planetes
Mind Game
Ima, Soko ni Iru Boku
Piano no Mori
Tentai Senshi Sunred
Angel Densetsu
Salaryman Kintarou
Jyu Oh Sei
Musekinin Kanchou Tylor
The Legend of Black Heaven
Mou Hitori no Kimi e

Sorry for the long list but I know how it goes sometimes when trying to find something new to watch. Any questions just ask.

Here is my list of what I consider underrated anime.

Gilgamesh
Pretty poorly rated anime. The reason for this probably has something to do with the fact that the frame rate occasionally suffers, the action sequences are rubbish, and it slows down in the middle section. However it offers an interesting story, decent character design, and an ending that you will either love or hate.

Hitsuji no Uta
I actually rated this lower than the average rating. I have included this because it is not very well known and is well worth watching (considering it is only 4 episodes long). The story is nothing special, they keep recycling the same animations over and over again, and the whole thing feels cheap a shoddy. Yet something about this anime will make you glad that you watched it, even if you didn't enjoy the process of watching it.

.hack//sign
Very well known and fairly well liked you may be wondering why I am adding it to the list of underrated anime. I am adding it for the simple reason that it is not appreciated for what it is, a compelling story with excellent character design - and because every other anime copying this style (and every other .hack project) is utterly terrible and some of them are rated higher than .hack//sign, the anime that they are ripping off and butchering.

Kurozuka
Not particularly well known and somewhat underrated. Though this is mostly because it is mostly a love hate hate anime, and I fall into the former group.
