How Do You Get Your Anime?

How do you feel about these various sources? The Following Is Merely My Opinion and No More That That: Streaming is impermanent (so far). If you want to re-watch something next month or next year, will it still be there? Maybe. Buying it is, of course, the best option, but it gets very pricy very quickly, especially if you're looking for older stuff. Some of that stuff gets ridiculous enough to make Bill Gates balk. It doesn't even have to be that old. How many copies of Steins:Gate (part 1) did they make for all of North America? 10? They wanted hundreds of dollars for that thing by the time I even heard it had been released. I will admit that I have gotten much of my anime through fansubs. I know it is encouraged at various places for younger fans to look down their noses at fansubbers and call it stealing. You are not being told the truth - or at least not all of it. I can say with certainty that I would not be a fan today and my large(ish*) collection of legitimate anime would instead be very small if it were not for fansubs. This is a sore subject with me. Don't get me started (but someone probably will). I could say a lot more and will passionately and logically discuss this subject if you wish, but I'd rather not. Let's just say that fansubs are a viable, if illegitimate, option and leave it at that. Please? [/pontificating] NOTE: The very first rule at MAL is, "Providing or requesting links to copyrighted, non-fair use material is not allowed." So be mindful. ~sigh~ Bastards! * Not nearly as large as I wish it was. |

lol I guess anything's fine as long as you can still watch anime. Maybe if the show really stood out; I might buy it. |

Usually free streaming. I have Netflix but most of the time I prefer subbed (which most of the time they don't have) so I use free streaming. And the only ones I've ever bought were all the seasons and movies for the amazing Dragonball and Dragon Ball Z |

All of the above. I actually like to own the anime but most of my money goes to stupid stuff. I used to have crunchyroll but I watched everything that I liked and then I diddnt feel like my 11 bucks was being put to good use considering fan sites had a hundred times more anime. One good place I watch is Funimation's site or their youtube channel because they have a lot of quality anime, though some of the dubs are bad. I personally don't care how people watch anime as long as they are a fan we are similar and in not bothered by people using torrents or whatever. Supporting the industry is always good though. Btw I prefer subs. |

I have strong feelings about making sure to watch my anime from sites that are legit site. I have never illegally down loaded an anime. I always go to Hulu, Crunchroll, youtube (FUNimation channel), or Netflix first. 99% of the time I can find any series that I am looking for on those websites for free. Sure, the commercials are so damn annoying, but it is a small price to pay for these great companies to provide us with them for free. I am also really grateful that they give us this anime for free too. They don't have to, but they give us hundreds of great series and they simualcast the new anime too. I like to support the anime industry. |

I don't mind subs at all, but given a choice, I always go with the dub just because I'm lazy (unless I know it's really awful). There is such a thing as bad subs, you know. Rotten translations, the timing is off, too much info crammed in, you're not given enough time to read it all...etc. To quote Hillary, "What difference, at this point, does it make?"Btw I prefer subs. * It's a British term that stands for Worthy Oriental Gentleman. I'm way behind the curve when it comes to streaming. I don't know what you hunt for, but I am certain that 90% of anime can't be found on Hulu, Crunchroll, youtube (FUNimation channel), or Netflix. Regarding ads, I recently posted this elsewhere when asked about the ads Tom does on Toonami: Usually I'm extremely hostile to advertising. It often drives me away from TV, radio and effectively keeps me away from streaming sites. Here I am, trying to enjoy a program and a series of extremely annoying assholes, who do a very bad job of hiding the fact that they think I'm stupid, keep interrupting to sell me something I don't want and couldn't afford if I did. Often the aggravation of the ads outweighs my enjoyment of the show and I shut the whole medium down and go watch some fansubs. Now, the ads Tom does on Toonami are like a friend who shares interests with me telling me about something cool and interesting. It doesn't work. I still know they're ads, but the different attitude makes all the difference*. I can tolerate them. * ...along with the fact that those ads are not on twice per station break, on every channel, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year for 3+ years. I really, really hate the ones that start out, "Did you know that.." HOW COULD I POSSIBLY NOT KNOW? In the first place they should be asking, "Do you care that..." to which the answer would invariably be a resounding, "NO!" |

In the first place they should be asking, "Do you care that..." to which the answer would invariably be a resounding, "NO!" Where to beggin? I don't think that Fallenkingzero was trying to start the subs/dubs debate. They just started their preference. Happen to prefer subs too. I know that you said that it was a lot of work, and you don't like starting and stopping the video, but that is something that goes away in time. I had that problem too. I also hated subs back then. However, I watch to watch One Piece (of course! lol) and all you could watch the series in was subs at the time. By the time I finished marathoning the whole series, a month later, I had become very good at reading the subs. I didn't have to pause it anymore, It didn't keep me from missing the action, and it was very natural to watch the subbed anime after that. Now, I can even eat or crochet (its kinda like knitting) while watching subbed anime. I kinda think that the biggest reason that people like the subs is that almost every series, and definitely every series is subbed, but only a few selective series are dubbed.... most of them are only the shonen series.. Anyway, moving on. I didn't mean that 90% of all anime ever created is on those websites. I meant that most of the anime series that I am looking to watch are on those websites. I have been into watching some of the newer series, and those newer series have simualcast on crunchyroll and Hulu. Most of the larger popular series are all there too. One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, Fairy Tail, Katekyo Hitman Reborn, both Fullmetal Alchemist, Dragon Ball Z, etc. They have a myriad of lesser known series too that are easily 10/10 Sakamichi no Apollon, Natsume Yuujinchou, Gankutsuou, Cashern Sins, Gurren Lagann, Ergo Proxy, FLCL, Baccano, the melancholy of haruhi suzumiya, Tiger & Bunny, Ergo Proxy, etc. I don't usually end up looking for that one anime from the 80's or early 90's that was only ever fansubbed. I feel the exact same way about the commercials, but you will find them everywhere and anywhere anymore. It is almost impossible to avoid them. WTH is with having to watch a shampoo comercial on Youtube to watch the trolololo song? WTF. When the commercials are on that is usually when I take a minute to look around here and post something. At least it isn't as bad as watching TV where all the commercials are on at the same time and then you flip the channel while watching them and miss 10 minutes of the show that you were trying to watch. Its alway fun talking with you GrinfilledCelt. |

Wow, Mugi. You need to read what I said more carefully. Most of your points are about things I didn't say. I said that Fallen wasn't making a big deal of his sub/dub preference. I never said I didn't like subs, let alone that I hated them. I did say, " I don't mind subs at all..." I have been watching fansubs for over a decade. I'm pretty good at it. When I said that "you're not given enough time to read it all" I was talking about bad subs where they only put the lines onscreen for like one second. It always surprises me what people at MAL think are "lesser known series". Every single anime you listed as such were wildly popular when they came out (except this 10/10 thing. I've never heard of it. Please go over to the Underrated Anime thread and tell me about it.) I'm not surprised any of them are being streamed. "I feel the exact same way about the commercials, but you will find them everywhere and anywhere anymore." That's a big reason I like fansubs. Never a word from their sponsors. =0) "WTH is with having to watch a shampoo comercial on Youtube to watch the trolololo song?" Hahahaha! Now that one is certainly not worth suffering a commercial! Not much on YouTube is. "then you flip the channel while watching them and miss 10 minutes of the show that you were trying to watch." That happens to me all the time, especially on the radio. Often while suffering through a commercial break I think of my favorite quote from Commander Spock, "Captain, I see no reason to stand here and be insulted." This is almost as bad as getting rick rolled. |

First of all id like to say its great that we can have a civil conversation here, since I have seen people practically lose their minds over small things, naturally I read all the posts and laugh my ass off. As far as sub and dub I should have been more specific. (I also see threads about sub vs. dub all the time, you were right though I was just stating my opinion, its a preference) I do watch both and I do agree with Grin about the following. "There is such a thing as bad subs, you know. Rotten translations, the timing is off, too much info crammed in, you're not given enough time to read it all...etc." I have seen some bad subs and even troll subs. I'm not really sure why I like subs more since when I started watching them it was a bother to have to read them. Somewhere along the way I started to like them though. There are some really good dubs out there, a few of my favorites are Bleach and code geass. I have found that sometimes there is a certain VA who either makes or breaks a dub. Anybody who has watched Bleach and Code geass has probably heard of my favorite VA btw. Onto the topic of ads, I really dislike them unless they directly apply to me. This rarely happens though. I do first try to find what I want to watch on a legal site like Funimations YouTube channel or their site itself. If I'm desperate I might even check Crunchyroll. Most of the time its not there though. Always a pleasure Grin, and you too Mugi. |

Personally, I watch anime on legal streaming sites such as Crunchyroll, Funimation, Crackle, Hulu, Funimation's Youtube channel, and even on the newly revived Toonami on Adult Swim. If I can I will buy the DVDs, but sometimes I can't afford it. I always feel like it's important to support the industry in any way possible. If it's downloaded from an illegal streaming site it hurts the industry, so I do my best to watch from legal sites, and some of them are free. As for the Dub vs. Sub argument, does it really matter how you watch it? Whatever language you decide to watch it in it's still the same show. I understand people have different preferences and there is nothing wrong with that, but there is no need to fight over which is better. For me, I prefer to watch anime dubbed, just because I don't like pausing or rewinding a show because I can't read fast enough and sometimes I just like to enjoy looking at the animation while understanding what's going on and I can't do that with subs. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against subs and I will watch them. At the end of the day, we all enjoy anime and shouldn't fight over which is better. We can feel free to agree to disagree, but this is a community where we can discuss what we love. That's my take on it anyway. |

zerorider said: Nonsense. You're spouting industry propaganda. It assumes that if you couldn't download it, you would buy it and if you download it you won't. I have shelves full of dvds that puts the lie to that statement - most of which I never would have purchased without fansubs. That's hundreds of dollars poured into the industry because of fansubs. [/rant]If it's downloaded from an illegal streaming site it hurts the industry... Sorry, ZR, it's nothing personal. It's sore subject with me. The fact is, fansubs do more good for the industry than anything else. It's free, world-wide advertising. Very few people outside of Japan would know anything about anime if it weren't for fansubs. The streaming sites never would have gotten anywhere without fans created by fansubs. The industry used to know this. |

No offense take. It's your choice where you get your anime fix and I won't try to change that. That was just a personal opinion of mine and hope it doesn't offend any of you. I was focusing more on nowadays if someone watched a show subbed on a site instead of watching it on say Crunchyroll and if a show is dubbed on a site instead of watching it on say Funimation. I realize this can be a touchy topic to discuss without going into too much of a rant, but in no way did I mean to anger you. I was just stating my opinion on the matter. |

I WISH i could buy the anime and manga i wanted. There is nothing better than opening up a brand new anime! I spent some 8 to 10 years slowly buying all the of Inuyasha seasons, only time i was given money as a young adult was for my birthday and for christmas. Neither of these allowed me to buy a season alone (since they cost like $80 around here) and most likely i only purchased 1 box set a year. It wasn't until this past year that i started watching fansubs, after spend 3 years watching almost no anime... I agree with Grin on this, fansubs hold their place in this world, its the people behind the anime that are getting greedy. This is of course my own opinion. :) Also, i tried renting random anime for a time, but if the anime isn't that good then im just going to be really pissed i spent the money on it. And the way i get my anime fix is usually by spending some large amount of time looking through my "to watch" list, and then find something completely new from someone's list! |

for my anime fix for many years i streamed everything on free streaming sites but earlier this month a friend of mine got me into downloading and i love it and probably will never go back to streaming. also i fully agree with GrinfilledCelt fansubbers do a lot more good than bad helps spread the anime more and make it more accessible which allows more people to be able to view it which helps the fan base grow and lets more people get into anime people new to anime and are curious about it are likely to go to free site caus i mean if ur just wanting to check out somthing u dont even know if ur going to like would u want to go right ahead and pay for it? i certainly wouldnt plus this is just my opinion but i dont think fan subs takes much from them in sales caus i mean the majority of people who choice to download somthing for free probably wouldnt watch it if the option to watch it for free wasnt there caus a lot of people download for resions like they dont have the spare cash to spend on anime or they cant justify their spending money on anime so either way they wouldnt be spending there money on it so with fansubs at least they get to watch it at all |

Yes, TD, that's close to what I said about it. The trouble with fansubs is that no money gets back to the poeple who created the anime and they need to make a living. That's why it's important that you do buy anime stuff when you can. If you watch streams, they at least get some cash from the %$#@ ads. |

I started out buying new from Best Buy and used from local resale shops. Later from Amazon. I then found some free streaming sites but I hated the commercials and occasional poor quality. I then got a paid premium membership to Crunchyroll and Funimation. Finally I found how to use torrents and download some shows from BakaBT if I can't find them on Crunchy or Funi. If I really like a show I will want to own a hard copy for my collection, I will buy the DVD or Bluray from Amazon. Unfortunately not all are available or priced out of reach. I've seen titles listed for hundreds of dollars. No good reason for that. P.S. Fansubs are great. |
