I just finished Eureka 7 and, was thinking about giving this ago however when I looked at the characters I was kinda confused as to when this takes place compared to the Eureka 7 timeline. I saw Eureka on the character list but, not renton .-. so i wasnt really sure about when it takes place

Yup you've got it FatalFallacy, now that we've had some things revealed a little more that's what I've gotten too.

As FatalFallacy said, there's still speculation about some details but currently it's been heavily implied that the new show is taking place in the past of E7's world before humanity left.

Meanwhile, overall Eureka Seven storyline-wise, this is definitely still a sequel to the original TV series in that it follows after the original E7 story with Eureka having time traveled/dimension jumped into the past during a mission that started in her and Renton's time post original E7 ending, pregnant with her and Renton's son.

As such, she ends up in the past and sometime after arriving giving birth to Ao, so both she and Ao are technically still from after the end of the original E7, even with the story taking place in the past.

Watching it as it currently airs is better. Atleast you get to discuss each ep.

If you're not constantly vested and discussing the current series, I think its better to just Marathon Ao, or at least the series as a whole.

Since it's at this point in the series, however, where the main plot has more or less kicked into gear, I'd say either way is fine.

Yeah as Dangerr said, either way will work at this point.

IMO you'll see part of that is actually not all that confusing and relatively straight forward as long as you pay attention since it's obvious right from the start that Ao is Eureka's son and therefore you can theorize your own chain of events that may have occurred even if you don't learn the details or differences from what you expect until later in the show. :)
