| Kind of an odd episode, but an improvement from episode 6. I actually liked the idea of a parasitic tree a lot and was glad the episode didn't go the typical "nature good, humans bad" route I expected. I did think the episode could've used a bit more time however, as it seemed somewhat rushed and didn't get to expand on the plot outside of the basics. I also thought the beginning of the episode was hilarious. The whole "eff you physics" thing with driving the van over the tops of those other vehicles, only for physics to fight back by leaving them on their side rather than in hot pursuit seemed like the series was poking fun at itself or just anime physics in general. |
| I agree, definitely an improvement from episode 6, but a bit rushed as well. It didn't seem... thorough, I guess, would be the word. Of course, it's horribly implausible. Parasitic plants isn't a far reach, but controlling human minds with it is :P I think my favorite so far was the terrorist machine that went awry. That's something that I could definitely see happening, and is kind of scary to think about... |
| What was great about this episode was its unique atmosphere and the fantastic soundtrack for me. It really made it shine. Moreover, it was very well directed, maybe better than usual, so even if it seemed rushed (13 episode is definitely too short for this series, almost all the arcs could have been doubled), it was one of the very best episodes in my opinion. Oh and the script is still on ots way. I have hogh expectations for next ep too seeing the preview ! |

The whole series has a sort of "eff you physics" feel, but this episode "hung a lampshade on it" - i.e., they called attention to it. The fact that the van fell over after escaping the boat was the funny part. Less funny was the way that Ryoko's gun didn't move its slide in order to chamber new cartridges, and the way three napalm shells were sufficient at the end. Now I see why the lethal combat specialists are called "maids" -- they "clean up" inconvenient monsters, corpses, etc. The conflict between locals and rich outsiders is a classic theme, and the horror-theme of locals with a local religion/cult is a classic horror story theme. Here the local religion seemed ambiguous to me -- the evil mutant trees may have been a corruption introduced by outsiders. The ending moral is the classic sci-fi theme, "The new development spiraled out of control, we meddled in God's domain." At first I thought it was going to go more along the path I said due to the environmentalists protesting near the beginning, but then it went the way you've already expounded upon. Still an overused theme, but at least marginally better. As for the "eff you physics" thing I agree with you that the whole series has that sort of feel. Then again so many things do (anime, films, video games) that I don't even notice stuff like Ryoko's gun. Plus whatever animation studio is doing this hasn't exactly been the greatest when it comes to details. |
| I swear some people complain too much about physics this and weapons that. I've fired various firearms and I've taken advanced physics, both weren't that entertaining. I would guess that 99% of anime could be ripped apart by even the basic school kiddie in regards to missed elements. Anime, although lacking in some respects of certain minor details, is entertaining. Why bother being a crusader for reality? As for the episode, I enjoyed it. A strange change from the robotics and science experiments with this new mystical approach, but at least they are keeping it fresh with new angles. I should have guessed they would have thrown in some mystical elements after the episode with the photographers. |

| I like a lot of the little moments and side conversations in this episode (just as I did in ep 6). The moment before they run out of the building, where Izumida grabs her hand, and she looks at him. Ryoko's line about doing the saving AFTER the begging :) I loved the duct tape holding the van together, and the rear-view mirror that looked like it was going to fall off. That whole bit with the van made me think of Lupin. I like how whenever it's time to investigate, Ryoko gets into her slinky black outfit, while Izumida is always stuck in a suit. Even on "vacation" he has a casual suit. I mean, the point of her wearing the tight black outfit was canceled out by his brilliant white suit, lol :) Still a great show :D |

This series seemed more grounded in science and logic before...
