Silly but perhaps fun. A thread about what anime characters you would like to have as friends got me thinking about this question. Which anime characters would you like to serve with? I'll bore you with mine after you share some of yours.
-animeS - The plural of anime is anime. More than one deer is still deer. There is no damn "s".
-epic |ˈepik| noun•a work portraying heroic deeds/adventures covering an long period of time - adjective • heroic/grand in scale or character

Two come readily to mind....Kenshin Himura, because he is loyal and trustworthy. He would not bail out on me. The second is Alucard...nice guy to have around in a fight. He can't be killed and always protects his friends. Nice mix, ne?

Well, I'd love to serve with the 501st Joint Fighter Wing, a.k.a the Strike Witches! Heh!

--Gods, I hate that show. Glad you like it.

Got a kick out of Furykury1 choices. The do make sense. And so do yours Philly, after a fashion . . . . or the "lack" there of . . . ;-)

I know I asked the question but I'm still thinking. Maybe . . . .
For command officers I like:
Yang Wenli - Legend of the Galactic Heroes
Siegfried Kircheis - Legend of the Galactic Heroes
Roy Mustang - Fullmetal Alchemist
Olivier Mira Armstrong - Fullmetal Alchemits
Balalaika - Black Lagoon
Alex Row - Last Exile

For a team:
Taichi Keaton of Master Keaton - former British special forces survival instructor who can out McGyver McGyver, has book learnin' & horse sense, high integrity, easy guy to be around.
David of Blood+ - former Special Forces, cool head, good in a fight, high integrity, not likely to get on ones nerves.
Yosuke Kadomatsu of Zipang - Competent, honest, honorable, brains, well balanced combat skills.
Duke Togo of Golgo 13 - not sure about this one. Gods know he's smart, tough and totally spooky as a sniper but I'm not sure he'd go back for a buddy. Hmm. If getting you out was the mission he'd make it happen. Otherwise, you'd be expendable.

A hand picked platoon lead by Andrei Sergeivich Kalinin, platoon sgt would be Balalaika, squad leaders would be Nina Antalk and Dutch, team leaders would be Boris, Octavia, Tatiana Wisla and Rika Minami.
Randal Oland, Canaan, Ein and Zwei, and Madlax would be in the platoon as well.

MWO would be run by Chocolate Misu

Andrei Sergeivich Kalinin (Love Andrei! I like the military aspects of Full Metal Panic! I just can't stand all the school/rom-com shi . . . . stuff.)
Balalaika - Black Lagoon
Dutch - Black Lagoon
Randal Oland - Pumpkin Scissors
Tatiana Wisla - Last Exile: Fam, the Silver Wing
Madlax - Madlax
Ein and Zwei - Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom
Canaan - Canaan

--Did I say anything was "wrong" with any of them? I am simply not as fond of them as you are or not familiar with the anime. Like what you like. That's why there is so many different genres and themes out there. I just don't care much for ecchi, silly, and/or highschool stuff, and I can't relate at all to the whole zombie phenomenon. Ultimately it bores me.

-I'm not even sure which Boris you are referring to.
-Had to look Octavia up to see that she was from Tears to Tara. Didn't even remember her.
-Not likely to ever watch Bakuretsu Hunters.
-I never have and never will watch Highschool of The Dead. (Ecchi = Strike one. Highschool = Strike two. Zombies = Strike 3)

There are some pretty slick characters in Jormungand. Several would fill the bill nicely.

Kinda wondering if it should be on our list. It isn't really military but it relates. Hmmmm.

In Black Lagoon: Roberta's Blood Trail, Boris comes into his own and he is a character I think you would appreciate. You are the 4th person to recommend Jormungand, I am going to have to watch that one. (I really need to learn how to do sarcasm better, I wasn't criticizing you, just poking fun, that's all)

Many of the characters aren't strictly military, but I think I'm within the spirit of the discussion. Also, I found it an interesting exercise to limit myself to no more than one character per show.

Some Officer Types
Beneej "Spoor Aron Sekpadao Letopanyu Beneej" Spoor - Intelligent, aggressive and decisive. Not at all interested in micro-managing. I wouldn't want her in command of an entire theater, but as a fleet or division commander in the field? All day.

Alex Row - Put him in command of a war machine and wait for results. And you usually won't have to wait very long. If the desired results involve opposing war machines getting blown up, you will be particularly satisfied with the choice. He's not bad at the subtleties either. He'd likely do just as well with a tank platoon as he does with his airship.

The Team
Bai Ji-Shin "Mr. Chang" Chang - We don't get to see much of Mr. Chang, but I'd follow him. Smooth and in control.

Sousuke "Urzu 7, Kashim" Sagara - The caveat being that he needs to be kept pissed off, and not thinking too much. We need more "Oh shit, Kashim is coming for us!" and less "What the fuck are you waiting for Urzu 7?"

Spike Spiegel - Pretty damn good in a fight. Plus, we needed a pilot. Those are the rules.

Mihke - I can think of a lot of uses for a Type 74 main battle tank. And since it is possessed by the spirit of a house cat, it counts as a character. Wouldn't fit on a chopper though, so deployability could be an obstacle in some scenarios.

Clare - Plenty of personal loyalty. Organizational loyalty, not so much. What I also like is that she is eminently willing to cross the line to achieve the objective. Yes, that can also be a negative, but what can I say? I have a soft heart when it comes to stunningly glorious flaws.

Guts - Guts is a killing machine and little else. That sort can come in handy on certain occasions.

Chopper Tony Tony - Not exactly spectacular in a fight, but he's a damn fine doctor, which could come in handy. Just have to make sure he isn't in his "normal" form when it's important to be silent, since he makes a 'poink' sound every time he takes a step.

Kanta "Desert Punk" Mizuno - Sure, he isn't exactly disciplined, but he's just the kind of resourceful I want for the go to hell plan. He also utilizes a large number of gadgets, so he should be able to handle comms and electronics. Just need to come up with a way to keep boob ogling under control.

Lina Inverse - In case the go to hell plan goes to hell. Sometimes you just gotta say "Fuck it" and blow it all up. Since she can't be trusted to not just blow it all up, I am not at all certain about this choice.

@Grim0013.....I have a good substitute for Lina Inverse. She is none other than Chise. Even more dangerous than Lina and somewhat reluctant to use her true power.

Only seen the first 2 episodes of the show, but yeah, Chise is a bad ass, but more in a tragic way. The thing that makes Lina a liability is also what I love about her: She is completely willing to (ab)use her power. Though, now that I think about it, she does demonstrate some small restraint when she mostly stopped using giga-slave after finding out that it could accidentally destroy the world. And Slayers makes me smile, so I gotta stick with her.

Then, lets have both Lina and Chise. For a commando unit, lets go with Briareos Hecatonchires and Deunan Knute.

@Grim0013 & Furykury1 -- That was fun. Thanks for the links. Not everyone automatically knows which character goes with which anime. Loved the Appleseed reference.

I liked Grim0013's choice for a field commander. In fact, most of his choices are really good. Couple them with Kenshin and Alucard and the ones just mentioned and you would have one hell of a unit.

I've been meaning to re-watch Appleseed: Ex Machina now that there is a dub. I have a hard time getting the details when I have to deal with subs, to the point that I've begun learning Japanese in order to become less reliant on dub availability and quality, neither of which are as reliable as one might like. I remember almost nothing about that movie. I may have been a few sheets to the wind at the time as well, so that may be a factor too.

I also found the premise of this thread to be an entertaining exercise, which was nice. Seeing other peoples' choices and reasoning about characters in animes I've not yet seen has helped me make a few decisions on what to watch soon as well.
