THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE. ---------------------------------------- Having seen 2772 and Houou hen, I think this is the best one yet. 7/10, almost 8. |

7/10, almost 8 is my score too. Might end up with an 8. On reflection, I wish there was some resolution of the clan matters. I know this part was based on a legend, but still. And couldn't the Phoenix have just had a flute play, thus stopping live burials but WITHOUT causing the two lovebirds such a pitiful, drawn out end? Who would know? :P Come to think of it, the clan who were going to defeat the bad Yamatos, I didn't feel they were the sort to have live burials so maybe it would've been better for everyone if none of this ever happened and they had just won, ruling in harmony alongside Oguna. Stupid phoenix. I cared WAY more about all the characters in this than Houou hen. Even though Oguna did worse things, he was still more likeable and relatable. The leads in Houou were either bad with a redemption we never explored, or average who ended up offputting. (There was the lady bird Uchuu is good too! |

I'm the opposite, I liked Houou hen better than this, and thought the characters, while not very relatable, were more interesting. In Yamato hen, I'm still not relating to any of the characters, and they seemed slightly more bland. The story was also more bland, despite still being enjoyable. I give it the same score as both of you: 7/10, almost 8. However, Houou Hen was an easy 9/10 for me, so it trumps this. I still haven't watched Uchuu hen, but I'm planning on doing so soon. |

Phoenix was not as preachy in this ep, but didn't expect them to just stay buried like that. Guess 2772 is next Uchuu-hen remains the best of the three. Houou-hen had the best song, though. |

Personally, I liked this ending a lot more. To witness such a tragic fate for two who love each other was heartbreaking, but overall it wasn't quite as good as the first tale. |

There was something in this OVA that impressed me in particular: the moment Oguna and Kajika fell in love. There was that silent moment when he looked right in her eyes slightly smiling. It was not obvious that he was smiling, because the smile was very discrete. But it was obvious that he liked her. He had this joy in his look, as if he would have said he was grateful for what he saw. And her eyes, startled at first, as if she was a prey meeting its hunter, started shaking as if she was about to cry. It made me feel like she was indeed hunted. Her heart was injured with love. Maybe his too, because he seemed almost paralyzed, trapped into that moment. I have so much admiration for the animators!!! I don't think I have ever seen, until now, the birth of love in two people so well expressed in an anime or a movie! It almost reminded me about a sentence, that I find very deep and beautiful, from a religious book of old miracles stories: "he saw her and his heart got injured by her beauty" A similar scene that I loved very much was when Oguna, after fighting Imari, was under Kajika's care, and she told him that she had to heal him again. The way his eyes started shaking showed so clearly how he loved her, but there were second thoughts in his heart. He was in pain, and a pain she couldn't have healed. I don't think there are words to have shown his state of mind better. |

This one is the best so far out of the 3 ova and 2772 and character were not very unlikable as much as previous ova. (though this ova made me hate phoenix. phoenix bird feels like the representation of human filth romanticized with sweet words used in ironical way). Also I was wondering why space and yamato ova were looking good in comparison to karma chapter, checked in mal and found out rintaro was not the director anymore. |
