The endless debate between fans and haters. At one point, after spending a lot of time on MAL, you just realize it's totally pointless.

Okay, I'm really confused but how do I take the derivative of f(x) = x ln (arctanx)?

that question is part of calculus, not differential equations!

Product rule between x and ln(arctan x) then chain rule on ln(arctan x)

df/dx = x * d(ln(arctan x))/dx + d(x)/dx * ln(arctan x)
Then d(ln(arctan x))/dx (by chain rule) is (1/(arctan x))*(1/(1+x^2))

so df/dx = x/((1+x^2)(arctan x)) + ln(arctan x)

That's it, can't simplify anymore, unless you want to do a power series decomposition?

BTW, differential equations look like something like y'' - 5y' + 6y = 2 (a second order linear ordinary differential equation ---> very easy!!)

when you say differential equations, is this only ordinary differential equations, or do we have people here who know how to do partial differential equations?

well, i've already done ODEs, but I'm going to be taking PDEs in the spring, so i won't need help... yet...
