Do your homework first, because this show can overwhelm if you're not acquainted with the whole idol thing.

I'm seeing too many of those who don't know jack. Otherwise, the door's open.

I don't know anything about AKB48 (in detail at least) and the show was not confusing or overwhelming to me at all.

There are those who do need to know, judging from some of the comments I read.

Best song ever. Idols ripping their arms out, getting decapitate while fighting the power....:|

Anyway there's some part of the plot that's confusing like the way they forgot to mention Chirie moved away to a new city so she wasn't there when the girls auditioned and that during the Tenpo Reform, the Japanese government actually tried to ban entertainment themselves

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mizuno_Tadakuni

" The Reform tried to stabilize the economy, through a return to the frugality, simplicity and discipline that were characteristic from the early Edo period by banning most forms of entertainment and displays of wealth."

But anyone that didn't know this would think the concept kinda of ridiculous.
Also PEOPLE SHOULD REALLY WATCH BEYOND THE 7 MIN OF THE STORYLINE! Seriously the story is pretty decent from then on. The first 7 min was awkward as fuck but why only judge a show by the first 7 min? Watch the whole ep then make judgement <__<

No, really, I didn't think it was confusing at all and I didn't look anything up. I don't know why you guys think this is some super elitist show that only true AKB48 fans can understand.

If it's required to research the show before you watch it to understand or enjoy it, the show has failed. I think most people are disliking it because they don't find the show appealing or interesting or well produced etc. If it's mostly only AKB48 fans that like it, then the anime itself isn't any good. (btw, haven't actually seen it, so I don't have an opinion of it myself)

That's good to hear. I think that's also what the producer intended to do in the first place.
I want Rambo in a mecha-suit with a laser-chainsaw gun that fires nuclear warheads, fighting the love-child of Predator, Alien, a group of Bangladeshi terrorists, and Satan. (Actually that would be a pretty sick show) - StopDropAndBowl

Nah~ I think soulassassin just worry for no reason, there's nothing in the series need to be researched. Tho some part of the anime need to be explain but I think it will be done later. There are some inside jokes, references in the anime like the girls fighting ability related to their own hobbies in the beginning. Sayaka kicking away solder, when she's a 2 dan black belt in real life, and Yuko riding platform while dodging missiles, hinting her real life ability with snow board, over all it's not stuffs you really need to research but you would enjoy the show better if you know them. That's all.

Actually the animation are well done, art are well done, and despite being not experienced, many of the AKB girls did good job with the voice acting except the main girl who doesn't really have the child voice down, but she got better at the end. People seem to dislike the first 7 min (I'm ok with it tho) but they got around and think the storyline is interesting. Even some of the skeptical AKB fans who wasn't sure if it's good, like me, got interested. It's not bad tho but since the storyline is pretty shoujo-ish with the touch of dark environment, it might not be people taste.

Didn't know about AKB until I read the review.
Saw some videos, didn't like them.
Will continue to watch this anime for potential super saiyan weaponized idols vs mechas.

I really don't think there's a need to look something up before watching. The show doesn't require any knowledge of ABK48. I don't know much about them myself and I don't have any trouble watching. Maybe non-fans won't get some inside jokes but most of those are already funny/interesting/appealing to me even without knowing it was supposed to be a joke (like the cyborg girl). And, let's face it, if someone doesn't know they're inside jokes, people commenting about it will definitely mention it. So, in the end, even non-fans know about the references/jokes. Besides this show is doing a great job at not focusing only on ABK48 fans.

The problem is that some people have gross misconceptions or prejudices anything connected to Japanese idol culture, especially those who have ground their views from hearing unsavory reportage about modern Japanese pop culture and its entertainment scene by self-styled ignorant commentators (and even the likes of CNN).

Agree that people seem to think idol groups like AKB48 is only popular with otaku, when they're extremely mainstream....Maybe recommending some AKB stuffs would help and clear up the misconception would help.

AKB is really popular in Japan right now with 7 CDs sold over 1 million copies in just 2 days or less, or 6 consecutive million sellers. The girls do everything from acting in dramas, movies, to promote coffee, Lancome make up, ramen, cramp school etc, to doing fashion magazine like Vogue Japan, Vivi, Cutie, Sweet, and the older girls do men magazine as well. (FYI most of them are over 18, oldest at 26 and main girls are already 20.) They're also the most requested artist for Japan Karaoke and top digital charts for all of their releases, meaning they have a large dedicated fanbase as well as large casual fanbase too among the general public.

AKB fanbase -

Heavy Rotation - one of the most popular AKB song, 45 weeks first on Karaoke chart, played constant in Japan, but western fans think it's fanservice due to the video but the video was very well perceived in Japan by girls. Majority of their fangirls came to AKB48 due to that song. It's just different culture.

The first episode (and I did watch all of it) was interesting and pretty cool, but I just couldn't take it seriously. I mean really, idols are an act of terroism against the government because the world is dying?

I don't think the producers thought though the plot hard enough. Then again maybe they had intended it to be very wacky and odd.

Well, you can edit that "do your homework" part out of the first post. It might offend people.

I thought AKB48 was so popular everyone should at least have heard of them? Oh well, I guess not everyone keeps in touch with non-anime related Japanese pop culture...

yeah, I didn't need any of this research to enjoy this show. That director sure knows what they're doing with the series ~

There's fanservice littered about the show, and even some of it can be understood by people who know little to nothing about AKB48.

All I have to say, is that the Voice acting is top-notch, and the music is just beyond amazing ~

The AKB48 information is irrelevant. It's a bizarre anime and that's all.
