i notice some thing that could hint about that mai otome could be mai hime's sequel
1. Miyu and the Searr system
2. Mikoto and her hime symbol

Of course all these things are hints to the HiME anime but no, it could not be a sequel. Too many things are different, it's a complete different universe. You could call it an Alternative Setting or a Spin-Off maybe.

it's not a seaquel, it's an AU with the same characters, but there are some similar things between them.

How is it not a sequel? Miyu is the only alive character from Mai-Hime,
and Arika is Alyssa-chan's grand-grand-grand daughter, that's why Miyu helps her...
I've watched the show a lot of times, so I remember well he he ;)

They even refer to colony ships. I assume it's pretty safe to say Otome takes place an unknown number of years after Hime, though on a different planet.

I also got the impression that it could be in the same universe but many years after..

but it might just as well be in another universe so heh

This is something the writers did to give us something to think about, mite be they didn't decide if it was in an AU or not themselves either.

I think of it as an alternative setting since it's not a 'direct' sequel. Though I do recall Miyu was the same Miyu; she'd talked about having lived for hundreds of years and watched things as time went by and such? >.>
