Thanks to the anime (and fan translations) the novel gained international readers, I'm so glad people enjoyed it.

The anime focused a lot more on the relationship between the boys though it obviously still contains less of it than the novels do. (Especially since it's missing most of their inner thoughts, and those of Inukashi or Karan.) The novels on the other hand have way more action. So proportionally the novels have more action to them but they also have more relationship/character development.

Obviously Asano didn't have to do a rush job like they did on the anime, so it all comes out much more balanced, imo. However if you don't like exploring the relationship between the boys, the sci fi/action/fantasy aspects of the plot aren't going to do much to help you get through the first four volumes (the CF infiltration starts in volume 5).
