Classifications
  • Tachi
The tachi was used primarily on horseback, where it was able to be drawn efficiently for cutting down enemy foot soldiers. On the ground it was still an effective weapon, but somewhat awkward to use.
    • Ōdachi
      Length: 165 - 178 centimeters
The use of most odachi are either as ceremonial objects or cavalry swords due to it’s length.
    • Nodachi
      Length: 150 - 155 centimeters
They were primarily used for status symbols of skilled duelers, dueling and to counter cavalry.
    • Kodachi
      Length: 60 centimeters or less

  • Katana
    Length: 60 – 70 centimeters
The katana is generally defined as the standard size moderately curved (as opposed to tachi which has more curvature) Japanese sword.
  • Tsurugi
    Length: 80 - 85 centimeters
    A straight, double-edged sword.
  • Wakizashi
    Length: 35 – 55 centimeters
The wakizashi was used as a backup or auxiliary sword, for close quarters combat, to remove the head of a defeated opponent, and sometimes to commit ritual suicide.
  • Tanto
    Length: 15 - 30 centimeters
The Tanto is commonly referred to as a knife or dagger, the blade is single or double.
  • Ninjato
    Length: 40 - 50 centimeters
The Ninjato (also known as ninjaken or shinobigatana) is the most common name for the sword that the ninja wield. The difference between a wakizashi and a ninjato is that the ninjato is straight while the wakizashi is curved like the katana.
  • Yoroi toshi
    Length: 18 - 22 centimeters
The yoroi toshi is an extra thick Japanese dagger like sword and was made for cutting (piercing) through armor and for stabbing while grappling in close quarters.
  • Kaiken
    Length 10 - 13 centimeters
Women carried them in the obi for self-defense.

Composition

This picture here will show you different method of forging a sword.

Polearms

Varieties
  • Naginata
A naginata consists of a wooden shaft with a curved blade on the end; it is similar to the European glaive. The blade is 30 - 60 cm long and it handle ranges from 120 - 240 cm, and is oval shaped. Naginata can be used to batter, stab or hook an opponent, but due to their relatively balanced center of mass, are often spun and turned to proscribe a large radius of reach.
  • Nagamaki
The nagamaki is a long sword with 2 - 4 feet blade and a shaft with about equal length or slightly shorter. The blade is single-edged. It resembles a traditional naginata, but the main difference was that the handle of the nagamaki was not a simple wooden shaft; it was made more like a katana hilt.
  • Yari
Yari is the term for one of the traditionally made Japanese blades in the form of a spear, or more specifically, the straight-headed spear.
