Manga Or Anime?

Classic question.

My vote goes for Manga. I don't get tired to mention how Rumiko art adds something special to it that the anime never managed to portray.
Her art even adapted well to the story, she first started with her 70's style in the comic beginning advancing and maturing to a more professional art in the second part of the manga, adapting herself perfectly to the dramatic needs of the story.

Slight edge to the manga, because the writing was slightly more mature and sensitive in the second half.

And yes, her art is great. She's not the best pure illustrator, but she has such subtlety and range of emotion in her characters expressions. Any manga artist can do "happy", "sad," or "angry" but it takes a special skill to do "bemused," "flustered," or "pensive".

Plus the anime had some oddly placed filler episodes later on, like the baseball episode. That felt like it belonged around episode 40, not episode 68.

And not to be a total pervert or anything, but I liked the fact that they had sex in the manga. It gave a more mature and serious undertone to the whole relationship.

Still, the anime had its moments of brilliance too. I actually prefer the second half of the last episode of the anime over the final manga chapter. Those final few moments in the anime get me every time...

I just recently discovered the Maison Ikkoku anime and I like it a lot! So far I only made it to episode 22. But in my upcoming summer vacation I'm going to read the manga. When I finished it, I'll tell you guys which I liked better.

But from what you guys posted the manga will probably be better ;)

I'm usually a manga fan, but I feel that the manga is to short and while I like Nikaido (the kid who lives in room number 2 in the manga and movie) I feel that he really doesn't bring enough to the anime to be put in. The voice talent, music, direction, art everything about the anime was the best anime could do at the time, and in many ways still hope to do.

I do really miss the girl on the trip (not the one that's boyfriend didn't show), I wish that had been at least in a Maison Ikkoku special or something. But just like with Nikaido, those characters take away the focus on Godai and Kyoko.

I even liked the filler in the Maison Ikkoku anime. They weren't all winners, but they were usually entertaining at a minimum and I enjoyed having more time with all my favorite characters.

At the beginning it was a shock not to see Nikaido on the anime, but later I came to think that the director worked well on forgetting Nikaido, afterall he really wasn't important to the story and in the manga his chapters were kind of fillers as well, so no major harm there.

The filler episodes, as in other good 80's anime, were enjoyablel as well.

Yeah, good filler seemed to die either after Dragonball Z or near near the end of the series. I didn't really see any good filler on long tv shows after it. Everyone loved the learning to drive episode, and Gohan learning to survive on his own and Kami's/King Kai's training. What went wrong...?

Never read DB manga all the way, so i am not familiar with what are filler or what not. But for example, in urusei Yatsura you had a lot of excellent quality material made only in the anime.

Well, technically the entire second half of the first Fullmetal Alchemist anime was all filler, at least in comparison to the manga...

Um, I didn't like FMA. It was to much filler and it's attempts of following a future arc of the manga was done overly dramatic and poorly, imo. I try not to bash it since so many people love the anime, but it just made me angry.

When I first watched FMA, I was not aware that it was majorly done with fillers, so my ignorance in this FMA case made me appreaciate FMA in a good way, even avoiding the great hype that was going at those days.

So yeah, FMA was a good series made of only fillers, or at least middle of it.

I had read maybe 20 chapters of the FMA manga, which didn't last past episode 10. But by episode 8 they already had 2-3 filler garbage episode and introduced a new character AND made one of my favorite characters Scar run away multiple times in an episode. They managed to bastardize and screw up the characters at break neck speed I was too pissed. Even after it went beyond the manga FMA just kept pissing me off. There was the whinny child Wrath, their 'mother' sloth, which I knew was retarded, and just so much more. It looked like to me FMA didn't understand itself. Also, just a personal thing I noticed as I watched all the Japanese episodes; Ed *gasps* in nearly every episode past ep 20. It got so annoying as the VA made exactly the same noise with the same overly-dramatic music that plays in every dramatic scene that happens at least once an episode... It was so annoying. I can watch the dub with less problems than the Japanese because of that.

I have so many more reasons for not liking FMA, but I don't expect to convince anyone. What people like is what people like, and what they don't like they don't like.
