its good series overall, though I'll admit that there are some episodes I'd skip on a second play-through.
but anyone who likes sports anime with characters that actually change and grow will probably like this series.

I have to say I really like the OP and ED XD
Picking this up while reading the manga, the Go matches certainly take a while longer :P Don't really like the voice seiyuus that much though ... doesn't really fit IMO :S

I just had to watch the Japanese dub/English sub on this one. The English dub was unbearable. More reading, but less wincing.

Three years ago, I watched this series to the end. At that time I enjoyed it very much.

Yesterday I decided to watch it again. But now, I find it very silly. I don't understand how people become so enthusiastic and keen on a board game. They are simply ignoring every other thing (school, job, social activities, other hobbies, friends, family, etc) in their lives and just playing this game all the time 7/24/30/365.
Aren't they going to say "Oh, what have I done! I'm 40 years old and I did nothing but played this game until my this age!..."? Or are they going to be so indulged to this game that they won't even wake up and realize the awful truth?

Yeah, this series is about some WASTED LIVES ON A BOARD GAME.
Basic idea of this show is: One day, if you see an old/antique game board (e.g.; a chess board), don't you ever touch it! A ghost by come out of it obsessing your soul and ruining your life by making you play chess for the rest of your life!...

Dude, chill. Dedicating yourself to playing Go is no different from dedicating your life to playing baseball or making sculptures or acting or any one of a number of other highly specialized fields that only pay the top 1% of their practitioners enough to live on. People do it because they love it, and they dedicate their lives to it because they want to and they can.

If you can't understand being passionate about something and striving to be the best at it, then I don't know why you're even watching shounen anime.

Lol @AhmedHan, just.. really funny..

I remember watching it, and even went to read the manga ASAP after I was done with the anime, and it remains as one of my favorite till now, how I wish the mangaka would continue the manga though, and the animators would continue with the anime! :).. eh.. wait, forget it, I don't want new animators to ruin the continuation, I guess I'll have to drop the idea of a continuation for the anime, huh..

Interesting start, I'm liking it so far even though I have no idea how to play Go.
Sai is doing all the thinking, that's not cool, I hope Hikaru will learn to play on his own.

Gotta dig that late 80s/90s art style.

Seems interesting so far, hope the Go matches don't get boring though.

I thought Hikaru would give Sai a hard time in agreeing, but damn that was fast.

First match already and Hikaru has a rival in Akira, but it was thanks to Sai though.

Great opening episode, but I wish Sai was made to be a woman. The fuck with that lipstick though???

What a weird old show. The premise is ridiculous from start to finish, but honestly after I turned my brain off it was incredible how serious this show takes itself. Like who the fuck plays Go this much? Nobody talks like this script. And somehow Obata's godlike artstyle (i mean ART!!!) cant save this from its grade school animation. It's actually some of the laziest animation and composition I've ever seen in a show, holy shit.

It's bad. Still going to watch tho. Sai is kinda sexy

Ok, it's time for a re-watch! Initial watch was at the end of 2013 and I've had this series in my favorites since

and it only took the first episode to remind me how much I love the series, the episode director can be proud. They were able to fit so much story and emotion within 22 minutes, the Go match against Akira was beautiful end to the episode and to the start of the story.

Also the art/animation is very solid, first time watching in 1080p and the show looks gorgeous

This kid tries to pawn off his grandpa's old go board without permission and gets possessed by the ghost of go. He starts acting schizo in class and then uses the ghost to cheat on his history exam. The ghost forces him to play go in return, so he goes to his local go parlor and bests a child go prodigy by cheating his ass off, using the ghost for literally every move.
So far I'm a big fan of how morally ambiguous the main character is. Looking forward to seeing if the little runt will do anything himself or if the 400 old go master will just run the whole show front to back.
