Crossing the Acheron sea.

This whole ep basically has to do with Shun and Seiya's scuffle against the specter Charon, who is there only chance in crossing the Acheron sea.

Hmm so the seiyus changed. Even though Sakurai is my fav it will take some getting used to hearing him voice shiryu. And the openings for these ovas are so good.

Well that escalated quickly...their new voices actually fit them (well I need to see Shiryuu talk more, I can't really tell if it suits him after just 1ep lol)

WOW!!!! So, the pacing was definitely rushed. Characters all spit out their lines one millisecond after the next and it feels weird and artificial. No one has time to think about what's being said. It almost ruined how cool the river styx was, if it had more time it could have been really chilling but we blasted past it on a lightening fast pace. The voices are different now. The animation has visibly dropped. Presentation wise and pacing wise this was a rocky first episode.

But despite that, I loved it. I really did. I wish it was better and specifically less rushed, but what was there was really fun. It all started with that glorious opening which to me said we're finally going to lighten the tone after that horrifyingly grim arc we just had. The opening starts dark and bleak but the saints break in shining in color and the music changes to a hopeful tune. Saint Seiya openings and endings have always been immaculate at transcribing the tone of what's going on and to have the saints break into the literally hopeless underworld like the "leave your hope behind" sign implied, full of glistening hope and heroism, that was a good way to start in the opening itself. :)

Eighth sense still feels a little perplexing but it representing just a new, more interesting level up system for the saints to push themselves to reach and ignite their cosmos to new levels or whatever makes it fine with me already. It seems literally doing a suicide jump into hell is enough to awaken it, to brazenly die for Athena. Likewise, Athena herself and Shaka(maybe just Shaka if Athena always had hers) seemed to awaken theirs through accepting death. There's a definitely a theme here and it's already interesting in that way. I wonder if they won't actually ignite to the eighth sense... So far, it's very interesting and in tone with the way cosmos normally works and I'm all for it.

So the groups are as follows, Seiya & Shun, Hyoga & Shiryu, Athena & Shaka, Dohko, and Kanon. All landed separately and will fight from probably different spots on the map all the way to Hades. We'll see who makes it, this is an exciting way to kick the arc off. Gold saints and Athena on the frontline is great. With Pandora telling Hades 8 saints arrived it got me thinking, Athena isn't a saint and if you count the others there is only 7 saints. Is Ikki here? Let's find out! ;)

Even though the pacing seemed to lessen the impact of the river styx I am grateful we still got an awesome 3-dimensional first antagonist. Charon really won me over. He is definitely a grimy guy and he showed himself to be working for the money, not for Hades but for his own reasons. With money he would go against Hades command and guide living people across the river. But, he wasn't a good person by any means. This made their dynamic when he was singing dead souls tunes while sailing his enemies across the river despite going against Hades orders quite charming. I was wondering if they'd become comrades of some kind. He only became more interesting when he had a mini character arc. He first saw that Shun gave him a very personal belonging to avoid fighting, then later he saw that he saved him from drowning and trusted in an enemy. Finally even when he attempted to kill Seiya and choke Shun, Shun's eyes were not of hatred, or depravity, they were peaceful, he still wanted to trust Charon. This moved him so much that he gave him the pendent back and guided them to shore without any more fighting. Charon is a man who delivers the cruel and depraved across the river, he's used to the most awful people coming through here. It makes total sense he would act the way he did, he doesn't respect or trust the people here, so having someone kind, compassionate, and peaceful trust him, it really moved him to the core. Yet, his grimy nature still wanted to fight Seiya because he didn't see those things in him. I hope Seiya didn't kill Charon because I'd like to see him come back, this time as a friend.

The underworld is looking a lot like past arcs battlefields but with more depth and diversity. It's not just pillars, or temples they have to go to, it looks like they'll have to traverse some confusing and dangerous land. The prisons do look a lot like temples though, hehe.

Despite the presentation issues, I thought this was a strong first episode!

@gfsdfgsdgsdfgs You'll get the true voices back for the next Chapter. ^^ (Seiya with Bleach Ichigo's voice is weird, Shun's new voice is... )

While the Sixth Sense is the mind/spirit (see Ikki VS Shaka) and the Seventh Sense, the (Ultimate) Cosmo (its mastery in other words), does appear like a power-up since you realize the Cosmo is infinite and you can tap into it (turning fights into a will duel), the Eighth Sense is merely an ability. Only Teshirogi made it a power boost for her manga. It only consists in:
- being
- not being under the rule of a god's will as a soul (Athena, Shaka able to walk, dead, in Hells), and thus being free of the life/reincarnation cycle ("Shaka" able to come back as the Virgo Saint every War).
Of course, it relies probably on an effort of will too, in order to transcend death (maybe that's why Ikki had no problem with the concept). Athena as a god and Shaka as a buddha already owned it.
If there was a Ninth Sense, I guess it would be Divinity. Well, unless you consider SS G Assassin. XD

If you're interested in the original concept, the sanscrit word is Alaya Vijnarat if I remember it right.

Great you took the technical changes so well. It didn't go so well for me, particularly a few years after the Hades Chapter first OAV series and the Tenkai Chapter movie. Personally, I could not stand the director change: beyond telling the story I already knew, the anime was adding nothing to the table unlike the two previous series. (for others, it was the integration of the manga humour that was despised)

@Rei366 I'm glad to hear that about the voices. The new don't seem bad but they feel off to me.

I thought the eighth sense was something like that, that is why I had thought it may not go as far to be a power they ignite into. That makes sense about Shaka and Athena.

I will read up on Alaya Vijnarat, ty!

As for me not knowing the original story, being able to see it animated is enough for me to really enjoy it. ^_^

I will refrain from my opinion on the voices. They were changed because of complains to the Staff. LOCKLOCKLOCK! Restraint! be good Pup. With the exception of the Overture movie and Omega (Seiya only), the cast will not return unless miraculously.

I'm glad there's activity here. It almost makes me want to watch the Hades saga again. But then, I'd have to face how sluggish the Inferno arc, and the Bronzes being slightly hopeless, especially at...the Infernal Wall.
