It really depends on how you look at it. I personally didn't find the end depressing.

No. it is NOT depressing or tragic. It just doesn't make any sense ... he survived on destroyed planet without her super-gf? What is he gonna eat? Or drink? Or where is he gonna sleep?

That's the depressing part. There is nothing to eat or drink. He's only going to live for a short while in his fantasy world with Chise until he dies.

If you think too much about the situation he is in it ruins the ending the author was trying to show. To be honest I thought the ending was great the entire series is depressing and sad, but in the end all that matters was love and if you try to think about his situation too much you'll ruining the ending. I love the ending.

I thought it was tragic. Perhaps no more so than the majority of the rest of the anime was, inappropriate and unintentionally(?) funny moments aside, but still definitely tragic. Probably the most depressing thing is that it's not even certain how much of Chise is really still Chise.

In the manga, Shuji asks Chise what he's going to eat, and Chise apologises.

I thought it was sad and hopeless, but not tragic or depressing. Just as hopeless as my next summer will be (I can't pay even my rent with the money I'll get) and more sad than that. Yet it was beautiful somehow. If Chise were to ask the question she did during the series...

"Are we happy, Shuji? We are happy, aren't we?"

//Edit: I thought some people may not want to read his could-be-answer, so I hid it.
