Would I need to watch Kanon 2006 if I had finished kanon 2002? and is the 2006 the sequel of 2002?

Kanon's 2006 version is a wholly new adaptation of the same visual novel the 2002 anime was based on, just by another anime studio. The original anime had a very low budget and thus had some derpy art and had to cut out a massive amount of content.

2006 looks much better and covers pretty much the entirety of the original visual novel almost word for word. You don't need to have seen the original. It's just called Kanon (2006) because otherwise there would be two anime titled Kanon and it would confuse people. It's literally "2006" because it's when it was aired.

sorry I misread - I'll edit in a second

edit - Actually, everything I said still applies, just read it as "Yes, you should watch Kanon 2006 because it's ten times better - but no, it is not a sequel. However it does have a shit ton more content, so it's like seeing a new show." It is not a sequel, it is not a retelling, it is not anything but the same exact adaptation of the same exact material done far better (though I felt the ending was played out better in the 2002 version).

So "would you need to"? Well, that's kind of up to you, if you want to go ahead, need to for what though? The show is way different from the original as it's basically the VN in animated form, while the old series was more like a light touch on a few main story elements. So if you like Kanon, you'd "need" to watch 2006 I guess.

Dont even bother with kanon 2002, the art is worse than the art of one piece. And thats saying something.

After you've seen 2006, you probably wouldn't even think about watching 2002. Thats how great it looks.

Yes, watch the 2006 version. It's longer and better paced to give the stories and characters more depth and as others have already noted it's also miles ahead of the 2002 version in art and animation. I've completed them both myself, and well, I'd recommend only watching the 2002 version after the 2006 series if at all, and only if you curious about how sub-par and compressed it was and why being remade was necessary.

2002 is shit and so is the Clannad movie which was also animated by Toei. They should just stick to Digimon. xD

I watched 2002 first as I thought it was the prequel or something. I went straight onto 2006 afterwards and it was simply a much better experience.

It's arguably the most faithful VN to anime adaption ever. Also it's my favourite anime of all time =P

One of the things that I just didnt like at all of this remake is that the male MC picked the same chick he picked in the 2002 version.

COME ON!!!!!!

If in this version he would have picked another heroine, hopefully Nayuki, then the 2002 version would not feel "useless". Now their is no point of watching the 2002 version other than the Kazahana episode, which is kinda like this anime's After Story.

In Clannad, the only way to get After Story is for the male MC to pick Nagisa, which stinks because she stunk and the best chicks were Kyou and the dorm chick by far. But in this remake version, the male MC should have picked Nayuki since Kanon does not have an after story.

It's the canon route, I'm pretty sure. Why would Kyoto Animation make an Anime just for your liking?

There are 3 things that Kanon 2002 has that the remake does not have

1- While they are both pretty much the same ending in the final episode, the one from 2002 is a bit more satisfying.

2- Kanon 2002 has Kanon Kazahana, which is like its After Story (minus the drama).

3- In Kanon 2002, the blue hair chick actually likes the male MC. I dont think in the remake that she has a crush on him if I remember.
