A firm story with a very saddening end. If I could cry, I would cry a lot when watching this movie. I really loved the ending. Gave you a nice after taste. Although the movie was less than 1 hour, it had a concise and cohesive story.

Pretty sad... I guess?? Not gonna lie the cotton candy that just floated away hit harder than everything else.

Idk it just feels like they wanted to milk some cheap tears out of the audience as quick as possible. But in the end it felt shallow, like it didn't have any real substance. The 7 minute Shelter music video hit harder than this because we get something, she realizes everything her father did for her. Here, however, yay she finally gets to touch him, just because Gin was kind of dumb for a second and made contact with a human even though he said HIMSELF that sometimes humans join in this spirit-whatever festival?

If it made YOU cry, that's great. But really there wasn't much to it, and even though it's only 45 minutes, there could've been better ways to utilize that time to provide more of an emotional impact. If it worked with most people, which I guess it has considering its 8+ score, then I can't argue. It got the job done I guess.

Edit: I WAS pretty moved by the end credits song though

I spared my free time to have a good cry on watching this but in the end i didnt cry at all. It ended too soon and i was "what's going on?" when it ended. Guess the movie will be better if it longer, 2 episodes perhaps, to explain what should be explained lol.

And i wish gin doesnt wear mask all the time. I really love his eyes :(

Still worth to watch tho. Love their friendship.

It took me sooo long to finally watch this, but it was as I expected, emotional. I tend to avoid movies that I know will make me cry, but this was a short one, so I decided to go for it. Like most people, we all knew what would happen at the end, that Gin would disappear. That of course didn't make the end hit any less hard.

In fact, how it was due to him saving a human child from a fall made it all the more heartbreaking since it was so sudden. Since the movie begins with Hotaru being older, I had thought she was going to see Gin, so I didn't expect it to happen when it did, because she was still younger than the present point. That was a good way to keep things unexpected. Additionally, at an earlier part of the story, there was "foreshadowing" when Hotaru asked Gin to never touch her no matter what happens. However, this was meant to mislead the audience (not sure how many were actually misled like I was, lol). What I liked most about how Gin disappeared was that it was such a normal instance. The child wasn't in any big danger if he had fallen, but Gin saved him as if it was natural to him. When Gin realized what had happened, he made the best out of that last moment, and that's why it was so emotional. A small, normal act that suddenly changed everything.

I also really liked the moments we saw of the youkai in the forest and how much they cared for Gin. I cried during the brief backstory when the youkai found baby Gin and (continued to cry after Gin's disappearance) when the youkai thanked Hotaru. It's touching how the youkai loved Gin, but also knew he wanted to touch another human the most. I'm crying again just thinking about it ;_;

All in all, it was just extremely wholesome and emotional. The ending song also got me bawling extra hard. I'm glad that their first and last hug was a happy one more than it was sad. It was a beautiful, bittersweet scene. Hotaru's narration about what happened after and seeing her life go on also added to the bittersweet-ness.

Finally watched this movie. Nevertheless, a bittersweet experience ! Art style according to a decade ago, was best. OSTs were one of the reason to make the surrounding more emotional.

Damn MAN, actually I already knew the ending previously, but as now watching it directly seeing the execution, gave me the perfect emotional vibes. The narration by Hotaru was giving me nostalgia, don't know why. Feel like, life is really a mystery and to be enjoyed.

Some wholesome moments like this :

And man, the final scene, it literally made me overflowed with tears

I feel like i watched another "Garden Of Words". Same duration. Finally, loved this movie!!

Story was very much similar to this one shot, Kon no ki Konoha.
Probably because I knew about this ending for a while, it didn't felt that strong to me. But was a decent watch given the short duration it has, with the chemistry between Gin and Hotaru being a stand out.

Nice, short, and sweet.

I have seen this anime everywhere, from that one popular YouTube amv (that has over 100M views) to countless Instagram posts. Seeing it repeatedly, the movie has definitely lost its quality for me.

I really like how this series had Indonesian traditional music and performance during the festival.

Overall, a 6.5

Gosh... who's cutting onions, back there?

Such a beautiful, but bittersweet story! Some might complain about the length, but I say it's perfectly fine. Nothing's dragged on. It's well balanced.
What others can't achieve in 2 hrs, this one does everything right in only 45 minutes.
It starts slow but then it has such a strong impact on the viewer!
The randomness of Gin grabbing that human kid's arm at the end... that was the whole damn point...!
This is an anime I'd definitely recommend watching, and one that I'd most definitely re-watch again in the future!

Really good animation for the time it came out and while not being extremely original it was very enjoying.

This was definitely something. Like WTF was that? He preserved himself for soo long and now after one silly mistake, he is gone, vanished, just like that. That was too sad. But overall this was too good.

Even though I knew what the ending would be. The memories and time they spent together was honestly beautifully done and actually got me to tear up a little once Gin dissapeared and the spirits were sad for him as well.

A score for this is kind of hard, it's good and some of the backgrounds being hand painted really were lovely. Sakura and Uchiyama both did a great performance and carried the whole thing, per usual of their talent.

7/10 but not for lacking anything, just for how simple and nice it is.

It was fine, though for me not very gripping. Maybe It's just not for me, but it might be better for you. The story was fine and the animation was great, I think that I just personally like longer/ more complex stories. overall not bad.

Lindo.

After rewatching; I have to say I actually like the 44 mins length because there isn't much to what the story can provide. As for the ending it wasn't sad but beautiful. Because the tragedy of Gin being abandoned as a baby happened and can not be undone. But the spirits of the mountains save him from dying by turning if into a spirit like state which allow him to grow up and meet Hotaru which he fell in love and finally got to touch. All this happened because he didn't die as a baby.

It was a bitter sweet ending. There was no really way for Hotaru and Gin to be together anyway. Hotaru can finally live her life in reality. But Gin's disappearance will add to my anime traumas :(

A very moving story. Part of me wanted Gin to appear again but I guess that's the end of it. A bittersweet ending. I didn't cry, but I was so touched. The bright side of it was that they were able to express their feelings for each other and even though Gin was disappearing, he had a huge smile on his smile that finally, he could hug Hotaru, the woman he ever loved.

It was a great end for him. I just hope one day, Hotaru will be able to move on. I'm sure she will still visit the forest every summer though. I would.

She got him back. If you understand the characters well enough, you'd know she did!

suddenly remembered this and yeah, rewatching it while I’m emotional was such a bad idea. I ended up sobbing and hurting through the whole movie... especially the ending 😭

I first watched this way back in 2013, but sht it still fckng hurts.
