Here, I will put a list of animes that I don't know if I you should put it or not in the surreal category:

-1001 Nights
-End Of The World
-Blame!
-Ghost Hound
-Serial Experiments Lain
-Take The X Train
-Twilight Q
-Robot Carnival
-Digital Juice
-Paprika
...

You can discuss about them.

Hm, in my opinion, Paprika isn't borderline, it's very surreal. I strongly associate dreams with surrealism, though. Perhaps that isn't the proper way to go about it?

Anyway, I thought some parts of Mushishi were a bit surreal too -- especially the episode where the man's dreams manifest into reality. Also some aspects of Kino's Journey seem to fit. Just very slightly, like the way very absurd things are accepted as normal without much question.

And for a completely different show... Jungle wa itsumo Hare nochi Guu! It's a lot sillier than the usual shows mentioned, but I think the crazy world -- which exists inside of Guu's stomach -- is quite absurd.

I would say that Lain should definitely be placed in that category. Everything about it is pretty avant-garde and the art style is just flat out trippy. The story itself is incredibly surreal too.

Paprika should also be placed in the surreal category...I mean the dream world is totally off the wall, and so is the whole ending sequence...and the music of the movie? Well let's just say that it was...unique. That's not to say I didn't love it though. It fit perfect with the movie to be honest and I could even see myself listening to it normally haha...but anyway, I unfortunately haven't seen any of the others but I do want to see Ghost Hound soon.

If I watch any others that I feel need to be placed in the "surrealist" category though, I will make sure to post about it here.

Blame! (the manga since the anime represents only fragments taken from the manga) is not exactly what one would call surreal. The feeling one gets from reading Blame is one of hopelesness edging on despair every now and then.

When the character or rather the world around him falls into madness then we can talk surreal. From this point of view the latter part of the Texhnolyze series may seem almost surreal from the point of view of a person that did not bother with the story too much.

P.S : Ghost Hound is rather on the mysterious side with some explanations here and there that restrict the surreal feeling one may get from watching this anime.

Could Memories: Magnetic Rose be considered Surreal? Although everything could be explained with some rational solution (holograms) it just transmits that surreal feelings no the viewer.

btw if u havent seen it yet i really recommend it.

Yeah usually it's kinda hard to find a pure surreal anime/manga, since most of them only give you that feeling of surrealness and return to a somewhat normal state of things or give the viewer an explanation.
Anyway thanks for the movie link added to POW.
