Well, 30 girls were chosen on December 2 to participate in a public audition on December 13. This audition will decide who gets the 9 lead parts. I believe some (if not all) of the lead characters will have the same names as the girls that voice them so we really won't know the voice cast or even the character names until the 13th.
I'm still crossing my fingers that either Mayu Watanabe, Minami Takahashi, or Tomomi Itano gets chosen for a lead part.

Yup. Actually this series was made because of the popularity that the iDOLM@STER anime has generated and AKB48 is the most popular idol group in Japan at the moment. Some of us fans are actually surprised an anime based on or about them wasn't done sooner.

Update
Round 1 results are finally in. The 30 girls chosen from the 200 girls in AKB48, SKE48, NMB48, and HKT48 are as follows.

AKB48: Ishida Haruka, Ichikawa Miori, Iwata Karen (research student), Oota Aika, Katayama Haruka, Kobayashi Marina (research student), Sato Amina, Sato Sumire, Suzuki Shihori, Suzuki Rika (research student), Takeuchi Miyu, Chikano Rina, Nakagawa Haruka, Nakaya Sayaka, Nito Moeno, Fujie Reina, Watanabe Mayu
SKE48: Sakai Mei, Sato Mieko, Nakanishi Yuka, Hata Sawako, Hara Minami, Furukawa Airi, Yakata Miki, Yagami Kumi
NMB48: Ogasawara Mayu, Kinoshita Momoka (research student), Nakagawa Hiromi (research student), Mita Mao (research student)
HKT48: Murashige Anna

In the final round on December 13, the members will introduce themselves and read lines in front of 100 lucky fans. The 9 girls who deliver the best performances and possess an eagerness to voice act in the future will be announced as the winners that day.

Nice to know although I have to watch the anime to see if they are good as Seiyuu. I expect the best from all of them.

I'm not surprised Sayaka made it, she's a fan favorite for being in the voice cast of the anime.

Anna Murashige didn't make it though, I was wanting her in, but Karen Iwata did make it, so I'm still happy.

Trying to make it clear, the initial plot is a combination of sci-fi with some dystopia of a post-Earth space dictatorship outlawing pop entertainment (think Equilibrium or the old arcade shooter Revolution X), and these nine girls -- interns, really -- are the last hope to carry out a lyrical "guerilla war" that uses music as a weapon, perhaps at least using New Akiba as their base of operations.

This ain't going to be like slice-of-life IM@S or something like that. Nor it would contain blatant shoutouts to Macross or Aquarion. It's clear Kawamori and the AKB honcho want to do something different.

A coincidence, considering that Namco/Bandai not only worked on IM@S but also developed the Macross Frontier games.

But just as I said earlier, this show can't be called a IM@S clone, it's going to be very different.

Want real AKB songs being played in this anime.
Stuffs like River, ALIVE or Beginner would actually fit the whole "fight the power" theme going on. Or maybe Kaze wa fuiteiru anime ver on stage. It fit with the whole give hope to people through music thing. <3

Hate the moe design tho but it could be like Madoka, look like 12 yrs old but with dark storyline. Expecting a masterpiece with Ano Hana and Toradora script writer <3

Oh, Aki-P would make sure of that, no problem with the songs for he's gonna cover it all from first to last episode. :)

Have no issues with the character designs either, just that a story must be delivered and told properly.

Well Idolmasters had completely fictional characters with fictional personalities and backgrounds. Of course, that doesn't stop the girls in this anime from having completely made up personalities, etc. In fact, its pretty much a given that the idol group in real life have fabricated personalities anyways.

After all, you can't be having the fanboys finding out that their idols are actual people, who have human flaws and, god forbid, a sex life. Not that I blame the fans for thinking this way; one of the biggest things that celebrities are selling, especially something like idols, is their image. I find it hilarious how celebrities bitch when the real them is exposed or when fans demand them to be a certain way; people are throwing their money at you because of their image of you, if you can't keep up the delusions of that image, you deserve the consequences.

Japanese entertainment personalities (along with the fandom and the scene itself) are very much different from their Western counterparts; while scandals don't do much damage to the latter, the former get very affected that some of them do resign or retire to save face.

But Akimoto's creation is very much different it defies the conventional rules of the game, that some analysts say that he's the Steve Jobs in his field of profession.

BTW, Rena Matsui of SKE48 is the biggest Idolmaster fan out there, and she damn knows how the upcoming show should work, and expects it to exceed IM@S.

They still have a lot to work on, according to a source within the studio: estimated length is 13 episodes (1-cour) and a possible second season if it succeeds.

You probably don't know much about AKB48 bro.
At the start they are marketed as "stars you can meet, can related, with total flaws in dancing and singing, with flaws like big ear (Kojima) or yaeba teeth (Itano), but you can gradually see them grow, be prettier, get better and improve."
On AKBINGO, the girls do many things like during Muchaburi Dodgeball, they do things like eat bugs sushi if they loose or on Shoujiki Chess, the girls are hooked up to lie detectors and asked personal question about themselves and they can't lie.

For example - Kojima Haruna was busted for having a dirty house as well as faking certain things for the camera as long as it's entertaining.
Watanabe Mayu was busted for buying Hetalia CD over buying her members NO3B's sub unit release.
Maeda Atsuko was busted for not knowing all the AKB members name or even care (can't blame her, 50+ something girls...) as well as can't write Thursday in english even tho she has been learning them, she spell Thursday "Sathday"
Sashihara Rino like to troll the members and is pretty pessimist about herself, stating many times she's not cute. She's also a very open Wota and even know Wotagei.

The point is AKB is market as very natural girls who regularly talk about their lives on Ameba or troll each other on Google+. Even during their recorded rehearsal for Kohaku Utagassen, the girls were photographed in ugly colorful sweets without make up. Even the girl chosen to represent the group image as a whole Maeda Atsuko is very introvert, and even cried on stage about "why am I being promoted more than others when I'm not good at singing or dancing?"

You should learn about them more instead of just assuming things.

Anyone who doesn't understand or have no inkling about Aki-P's creation should pick up the AKB49 manga for starters -- through the main character Minoru/Minori it's quite an excellent introduction into the inner workings of the system.
