Asuka has got to be one of the most intolerably selfish, insincere characters in anime history. The precept of this episode — that you shouldn't immerse yourself in a fantasy world to the point of delusion, is executed with finesse; however, it hesitates to engage with the notion that you needn't continue to acquaint yourself with every element of your current life just to spite a fantasy, especially if it necessitates continued association with unsavoury parties. Asuka is violent and deceitful, making a point of informing Haneda that no small part of her outburst derives from petty jealousy over him resorting to whimsical coping mechanisms that she has long grown out of. Asuka thinks nothing of physically assaulting Haneda and his oblivious split personalities (who are essentially different people); lies about how possessive she intends to be as a girlfriend "only in name" in a vain, fake-humble attempt to elicit sympathy from Haneda; and seemingly has no capacity for empathy for someone who she knows is prone to the same chimeric delusions she once found solace in, despite him holding back from defending himself. Haneda built various connections with other people through his alter-egos, and it appears that Asuka, like a child, drags him away from these very real relationships just to isolate and monopolise him for herself, with the show painting this as something meant to appear endearing to the viewer, despite it being anything but.

The lines between good and bad writing can be hazy at times, but this episode had all the ingredients to whip up some nuanced narrative excellence, had Haneda kicked Asuka to the kerb the instant he came to his senses, proving that there was always a "third option" between preserving the status-quo and internally isekai'ing yourself. Sincerely wish that third option was taken.
