wow the retrieval arc is almost as good as some of the better eps from the main OVA.

5/5

EDIT: I love the music at the end. Does anybody know what piece it is by any chance?

"...our faces marked by toil, by deceptions, by success, by love; our weary eyes looking still, looking always, looking anxiously for something out of life, that while it is expected is already gone – has passed unseen, in a sigh, in a flash – together with the youth, with the strength, with the romance of illusions.” - Joseph Conrad ('Youth')

lolwut . . .

Anyways, cool episode, although I wonder how they are going to get home if they need to resupply . . . That would involve piracy, which their is no way in hell that that wouldn't just attract even more of the Free Planet Alliance's ships . . .

I love these small scale battles consisting of a few ships. It's a nice change of pace from the 6 digit fleet encounters that are the LOGH norm.

damn, I wish there are more of the small skirmishes in the main ova, they are so much easier to follow and understand.

Very cool tactics used, and it's nice to see skirmishes in a smaller scale, it's also easier to get invested in the characters. I had no idea when watching the OVA but from the ginaepedia and observation, the war tech is actually significantly more superior on the Imperial side. You have directional Zephyr particles, you have Iserlohn fortress with its Thor Hammer, you have entire fortresses that
, you have Imperial ships that can fire powerful lasers that the FPA can only achieve 80% power (hence why FPA fleets have more laser beams on their ships) etc. Heinessen has the

That's somewhat paradoxical considering modern history overwhelmingly shows democratic societies as ending up having better war tech than autocratic inflexible societies.

One thing I don't understand, why they need to get closer to confirm whether it's a natural space object or enemy?

Why can't they use in-built telescopes? There's nothing 'natural' about hot red glow emanating out of the arse end of a space rock.

Reinhard channeled some Roy Mustang there! Friggin' loving this arc. The tension was pitch-perfect, and the strategies, for once, believably effective. I think I actually like this anime-original content more than the stuff that's been adapted, blasphemous as that may sound. It's like very well written fan fiction.

Hmm, speaking as a physicist, it's reasonable to assume that optical/infrared telescopes must have saturated at about current levels of sensitivity. It's not easy to spot an object as tiny as a ship from a distance that could easily be millions of km. In battles, they're more dependent on some advanced form of radar, but enough interference from the comet would mean they would have to get closer to be sure about the ship's presence.

@Arachnophobic

Ah I see, thanks for you explanation. I haven't touched this subject for years since High School but I know a bit of rudimentary knowledge from fiddling with optic fiber hardware.

The reason I questioned it I guess was because a small group of experts on board should be able to easily discern whether a fleet of ship lies ahead coming towards them or whether it's just some natural space objects.

Time and time again, in the OVA, they needed to get closer to a massive fleet of ships which all had their thrusters on only to get entrapped in an ambush.

To avoid this situation, I really could not see why each fleet could not employ a space DMZ regardless of when war campaigns start, to mitigate these scenarios.

"We're not space pirates".

Funny how Bendling's Seiyuu later played space pirate Cahill Saint in Gundam Reconguista in G.

Dayum, how strong are Imperial hulls.

If you're still interested seven years later, that's the first symphony of Jean Sibelius.

Really interesting and strategic episode, that girl really is the main highlight of this arc so far

Reinhards ability to get such great results during small battles and other minor situations makes him look so good and worthy of rank
