not bad but didnt the first series have a different explanation of Lupin's first encounter with Goemon but I suppose it could have all been a lie like the end suggested

Now this special was actually genuinely very interesting to watch. The way that the gang came together seemed like a breath of fresh air.
Aside from that, the first moments of it got me really exited... then Lupin. =[
Oh well, Fujiko having her zipper pulled down was very yummy.

Well I agree about Fujiko's zipper.

I loved it. Not one scene was I bored in; there was always some fun dialogue/banter between characters and some hilarious moments, and the story pacing was great all the way through. Had a ton of enjoyment watching it, it's definitely my third favorite Lupin III movie/special, right under Secret of Mamo and Castle of Cagliostro.

This was very well done, but the inconsistencies killed me. A lot of it would be pretty easy to retcon, but not the Lupin/Goemon encounters. Oh well. Original series had a different meeting than the manga did, too. Not the biggest deal.

Vengeance of everyone's grudge.

I found it drearily boring except for Lupin and Goemon's chase scene which had a bit of vim to it. Even that suffered from a oddly inappropriate choice of musical score.

I feel a bit curmudgeonly writing this, but I don't see the point to a "how they met" story with these characters. Lupin III has never seriously entertained notions of continuity or history, and this admits as such by at the end deliberately clouding whether this story "really happened". This wouldn't be a problem if the story was interesting, but it isn't.

My favorite special to date. If they were all this good, then we could be happy Lupin fans!
Just great, fast paced and humorous.

Good Special overall.

If it weren't for the ending it would have been my 2nd favorite movie/special but I really hate it when stories pull the whole, "It might have never happened" bullshit... If they didn't do that reset ending I could have just written it off as, "Another interpretation of how they met" but I can't do that now. Not that Lupin III necessarily needs canon but even if they didn't pull that, it wouldn't have been canon, Lupin not having the green jacket alone makes it non-canon... Along with the fact that Lupin met Goemon in the first series. Regardless, still an exciting adventure with great interactions between characters, great action(especially the Lupin vs Jigen moments) and some of that good old Lupin humor all over the place. Definitely solid.

Soundtrack needed a little work though, usually love the soundtrack in these but this one was lacking just a bit.

The Bossa Nova arrangement was pretty classy imo.

Great action, good humour, typical animated Lupin exaggerated things... it was highly entertaining despite the numerous incoherencies (but I expected them since the beginning because Goemon was listed among the characters). The end "revelation" was more of a surprise, I don't understand why they did not just present it as an official rewrite of the heroes background instead of the semi-truth they opted for. It looks like the red jacket is firmly printed in the Lupin myth.
The start ambiance clashes a bit with the later goofiness. Very poor music for a 90minute TV-special outside of the well-known theme and the Bossa Nova track.

Score: 6+/10
Enjoyment: 5/5

Wow, this one was great omg. The story was pretty good, the characters were on the spot and jesus, the M U S I C. I see that some people here didn't like it, but I simply loved. Bossa nova is pretty recurrent in the franchise, but in this one all the songs were in Portuguese, making everything even more special to me <3 The last music in Portuguese was a really nice thing they did for the anniversary. Memory of Smile was a music first sang by Yasuo Yamada (the first Lupin seiyuu), so was this a kind of tribute, maybe?
Easily became one of my favorite specials u-u

So this is the canon version?
Part 1's story about all of them meet each other isn't?
Except Zenigata I guess, we never get to see how Lupin and Zenigata meet each other in any parts

Zenigata, what a hard worker xD

Wait.. so the story is fake? Half-fake?
We'll never know

What a cool ending

Absolutely loved this one, which tells the story of their "first contact." Especially because it turns out it was Lupin, disguised as Jigen, who was telling it just to kill time before a big heist while reminiscing. He also took some liberties with it according to Jigen, Goemon and Fujiko. But as that ending sequence showed, it had a lot of truth too. Here Lupin meets Jigen while trying to steal a treasure from the mafia boss who hired him. Fujiko because she was dating an acquaintance, and Goemon because he was also after the same treasure, which turned out to be the secret to making Zantetsuken, and the blade itself.

Oh, and Zenigata was originally chasing Fujiko instead of Lupin, which makes sense. His partner was also cool here, he was the one who advised Zenigata to join the ICPO so that he could keep on chasing his raison d'être, aka Lupin. There was a lot of action too, and I never get tired of seeing Goemon being unstoppable with his Zantetsuken. Fujiko, Jigen, and Lupin were pretty cool throughout it too. Jigen was so closed-off at first that it was kind of a joy to see him breaking in laughter with Lupin in that scene too. And Fujiko avenged Brad in the end. Even Zenigata was such a badass here, the king of brawling! can't believe he put all of those people down with his fists alone. xD Welp, loved it.

Lupin III: Episode 0 "First Contact" (2002)
How the Lupin gang formed, best version (there are several). Finds good balance between the darker tone of the manga and the cartoonish violence in most anime adaptions. Pacing, animation, writing, comedy are all rock solid. Good intro for Lupin starters. (6/10)

Just finisehd this. Good comedy (except for a terrible rape joke) and good animation (for the time), but the character design for everybody except the regular 5 is so generic. And why do we have a brazilian bossa nova soundtrack for a movie set in the USA? Lupin is so random sometimes, but I love it.

The scenes when they actually met for the first time were good, as well as seeing the characters outside their normal roles: Zenigata without his Lupin obsession, Goemon without his sword, and Jigen and Lupin competing over who is more stubborn. However, towards the end I was feeling the plot was too generic, with too many scenes of mindless action. And very little actual stealing going on. Overall average.
