I found this ova randomly but it was worth it.
decent ending for such a short anime sad but not all things can end the way you want it too.So it is a tragedy and at the same time a new biginning for Zwei now that he is phantom and yeah i sheaded some tears watching Ein die. i kept saying "life is so unfair for them two" lol
The mind is its own place, and in itself, can make heaven of Hell, and a hell of Heaven.
So, they did plan to animate the rest of the Visual Novel, but decided to give up? Normally, I would accuse them of giving up, but in this case: thanks God. This is such a horrible adaptation that it was painful to watch.
For those who have watched this, I suggest to check Requiem for the Phantom anime series. While it is adapting the same thing, it is a truthful adaptation and, in opposite to this crap, a great anime.
It starts off with Reiji getting interrogated for the location of Scythe Master and Phantom. It is also the first time Zwei meets Claudia in which she presents him a disc that contains his true identity. However, in exchange he must killed Ein as that he is the only one with the capability close to that of Phantom.
Apparently, Ein originally lived in Mongolia where her family and village was raided and massacred by the mafia of some sort and she was sold into prostitution where Scythe Master discovered her and made her an assassin, Phantom. Aside from that, Scythe Master is a scientist who specializes in brainwashing people but Zwei on the other hand seems to have this special resistance to all types of brainwash and thus, considered a failure and abandoned.
In this episode, Lizzie led a group of swat forces which resemble the Self-Defense forces not mentioning that both Lizzie and Zwei also dresses up that way. The team was assembled to destroy a scientific laboratory of Scythe Master located in some cave underground but upon entering the facility, the team was assaulted by female ninjas of some sort, most likely the Zahlen Schwestern but more members and differently dressed as that there was no mentioning of Scythe Master having any minions. In the crossfire, Zwei kills one of the female ninjas with a headshot. Seriously, this ova gives off the Biohazard impression.. After that, Lizzie orders her subordinates to create a diversion utilizing a smoke bomb so that Zwei can pursue Phantom and Scythe Master on his own.
Unfortunately, Zwei has no courage at all in the ova. Not just that he couldn't fight Ein, he was easily defeated. It seemed as though Zwei is simply no match against Ein, unlike in the anime where Zwei totally exceeds her in all aspects. Upon Scythe Master detonating an explosive device destroying the entire facility at the disappointment of Zwei's lack of courage and ability. Lizzie comes out of the elevator, Scythe Master's escape route heavily wounded and guns down Scythe Master giving him a severe stomach wound but Lizzie gets defeated by the angry Ein. After that, a second elevator appears out of nowhere and it turns out to be the SDF from earlier. Ein goes on a killing spree, taking out the entire group with just a survival knife. During the midst of chaos, Zwei attempts to gun down Scythe Master and ends up shooting Ein in her left shoulder again causing her to charge against him where the two of them exchange attacks, then Zwei decides to end it by shooting at each other. Unfortunately, the pendant fell out of his cutted shirt and it seems that Ein wakes up from her brainwash upon seeing Zwei wearing her pendant and did not open fire yet Zwei guns her down. Supposedly, she is to remember everything prior to her brainwash and gave Zwei a cute smile before the ceiling caves in killing her leaving Zwei to succeed her and obtain the title of Phantom. Thus, the bad ending...
However, the true ending occurs after the credits' roll as that Ein is still alive and gave a mafia boss a headshot in a black van vehicle.
Even so, this is totally different than the anime and visual novel...
Zwei never obtained his passport, thus he never regain his memories as Azuma Reiji. Due to the change of story, Zwei also does not gave Ein a new name, Elen. And because of how the ova ended, Cal is never mentioned either. Claudia appearing for the first time at the site of the interrogation room also makes it very different and changes the overall story itself.
This ova is horrible. Aside from all this, it does have a good OP done by Hassy and ZIZZ Studio and a pretty good ED. This is pretty much it..
I just finished watching OVAs and Thank goodness they gave the story a second chance after this bizarre anime! The other version is superior is every single aspect.
Well, I liked the first two but this one was pretty crappy. Mostly due to the fight which was just a bunch of convenient BS strung together.
All of Zewi's shots missing for one. Can head shot 100 people in a row but can't hit someone standing still? Ein's shots too, for that matter. At least they made the effort to show Zewi dodgeing a bit (not that avoiding gun shots from two feet away isn't silly to begin with), Ein just seemed to be there most of the time. The necklace just happening to pop out toward the end as well, right? There was several points when Scythe could have easily been shot, too, but he wasn't. Was really hoping he'd at least get shot in the end but no. He just disappears. Pretty pathetic. Zewi seemed pretty weak in general during the fight which didn't seem to fit. He was supposedly stronger. The only reason he lost in training is because he was a little soft. It was said he was clearly better. Maybe he wasn't doing as well because he wasn't fighting to kill her while she was, going to the softer thing again, but it seemed more than that to me. Like the writer said "yeah, she's stronger now... because we said so." All of that and more left the fight feeling a bit half assed and contrived.
In the end, as a whole, it wasn't too bad. Could have been so much better, though. Of course this is coming for someone that hasn't seen the anime or visual novel, judging solely on these 3 episodes.
Ok, decent watch for free evening but I take this only as advertisment for the game which is better. It wasn't good but it wasn't bad also.
And this was the bad end but I guess it couldn't ended otherwise (though OP had the scene with church also).
I am just glad I saw Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom first. The OVA was average to fill a bit more than 1 hour but I would never have started a 26 episodes series after this.
Pretty lovely ending full of action tbh! I quite liked this as it seemed this was an alternative setting to the first part of the TV series! Well either way a pretty decent OVA series!
The pacing was terrible, that was pretty much it. Lack of time for proper development, so it was mostly skipped to get to the main point. I didn't like that weird sex scene too. :/ The TV series is much better, obviously.
Obviouslly this pails in comparison to Requiem for the Phantom, however for the time it was given, this was pretty strong for an OVA
Ending was incredibly sad as well
