Emul's presence really takes stakes from battles, doesn't it?

I feels that if Emul is present during a battle, Sanraku is guaranteed to win, because Emul mustn't die. Usually you can't really predict if Sanraku is gonna win something on his first attempt and I like that. But now that Emul is probably joining on the ship adventure, I feel much less emotional anticipation and it's just plain wonder what's gonna happen next.
It was the same with the Lycagon fight: as soon as Emul joined I knew there were winning no matter what.
What do you guys think?

Not really. Sunraku already won a lot of battles without Emul being there. It's just their way of raising the difficulty a little artificially, knowing what will happen if Emul dies.

1. Considering that I only thought of it due to this thread, I will say it's irrelevant.

2. Stakes were never really a crucial thing in this series, it's a full-fledged video game after all.

What stakes are you talking about? Him dying in-game which would make him die irl or what? It's just an anime about a dude playing vr mmorpg.

You're right. it does give that sense. If we start feeling that way about her whole family as well, it's actually a perfect way to subvert those expectations by having one of them bite it later in the story!

By stakes, I believe OP is referring to the tension one feels when the outcome of a situation is unknown. Is that correct, OP?

i don't think they must win she can die any time and the will still continue or he can still die but save her before she die or send with one of his friends to save well basically there is lot of ways that the story can yes he have more success with emul on his team but it still don't mean that he will win

Why is everyone saying there are no stakes in games? Haven't you played anything difficult before? Tell a guy who's currently fighting the Radiance in Pantheon 5 in Hollow Knight that there are no stakes. Really.

It's the NPC. Sunraku said himself that if the NPC dies, they won't respawn.

Not sure if I’m agree. I feel like he could still lose a fight but potentially find a way to save Emul. Maybe have some sort of teleportation item that he’d use on her if his only option was that he could save her or himself. It would be interesting if the story made it look like she was going to die, just for him to save her with an item or some yet-to-be-learned skill, but the price is that he has to lose the fight, take a severe penalty, etc. You still have stakes and consequences to the action, and some tension if the story makes it seem like Emul might die
