@Flick_on it is funny and ironic how easy it is to trigger the fanboys with facts.
@Imiran I’d say that your comment isn’t the most helpful in the first place tbh. GGO is just a spin-off and the similarity between SAO and the other anime you listed seems to just be the trapped in a VR world premise, but the show itself is done differently. I get your opinion, but I must say that it made no sense to include since it’s not very relevant to the point of the post.

Also, SAO doesn’t seem to be just liked by big fans, it is very popular and there are many viewers who like some aspects and dislike others. Not a perfect show, but I prefer to at least try out shows that interest me first anyway so I can decide.

I'd argue that the weakest portion of SAO as a whole was S2 Part 2. There are no stakes. They PRETEND that they're there, but there aren't.

Everything other than that is actually a fun watch.

I started rewatching it recently because I felt I was too hard on the show the first time I watched it. Now 15 episodes into season 1 and I think my original assessment of the show was too generous. All I could think of while watching it was, what a shame a really great premise was wasted.

I'm a huge fan of the original LN, and I think the anime adaptation is poorly done. Only alicization arc was redeeming.
Try reading the novel instead.

So, I started watching SAO a few years ago, but after the first few episodes, I kind of lost interest. I liked the start and found the idea intriguing, but as the story went on, it just seemed to become more boring and lackluster imo (compared to before). I think it just couldn’t hook me in enough and had began to show some flaws. Now, I’ve decided to try it again and see whether I was wrong at that time and had a different mindset (I’m honestly very much open to being surprised).

Also, I’ve heard SAO: Alicization is supposed to be really good and the animation, narrative, and world building seems to have significantly improved (although it does seem to also have some flaws). It seems to be quite different from the original SAO especially with the new concepts and characters, so I’m also looking forward to watching it as well.

Edit: I changed the post to make it more clear for people who just read the title and skipped over the description before. For anyone who came late, I had been wondering before when I made this post whether the Progressive movies were actually viable alternatives to watching Aincrad, but they’re not close to finished and are more for filling in the gaps. So, I’ve decided to watch the entirety of the season this time (since last time I only had watched like 5 episodes) and from the beginning. I am looking forward to going into this anime with a fresh mind. I’ve included my planned watch order below since I know there are a couple things that I need to watch, so feel free to let me know if this has all of the stuff I need (people generally have said summary is okay for arc 2, especially since ALO has some of the worst content [that seems to be the pretty much universal take], but Aincrad and others should def be watched, so I might be going the route of skipping ALO and just seeing a summary for everything except the final episode for the sake of not spoiling my enjoyment [that’s just my current thinking, but ofc I’ll go at least try it myself before that]).

Watch Order:

- Rewatch Aincrad and go through the entirety (and see whether I like it this time)
- Watch/read summary of Fairy Dance arc and watch last episode (I might check it for myself, but I’m not having high hopes or expectations of this at all and I don’t want it to be the reason I feel like dropping this series)
- Watch SAO II (Phantom Bullet + Mother’s Rosario seem very important, but Calibur should also be watched, right?)
- Watch Ordinal Scale movie
- Watch SAO Alicization + WOU P1 and P2

Maybe watch Progressive movies as well? Not sure whether either of Progressives are acc necessary though

honestly its not worthed. its like MHA, but its og and edgy the whole way through
so teens would love these

its trash, but alicization, was amazing. its truly the SAO we all wanted
but after that, everything went to shit again so...
