Can anyone with expertise explain what's going on with the shadow line half way through everyone's body? Is it just as simple as a stylistic choice?

Once I noticed the thing it became so very very distracting with how unnatural it appears

Not to be rude or disrespectful, I’m genuinely curious.

There is a lot about anime that is not realistic, but this bothers you?

Why can’t you just ignore it?
Note: I don’t lazily watch 3-5 episodes, biasedly compare to other anime, or unfairly judge by surface level similarities. With every anime I start, I watch the entire series, both Japanese Sub & English Dub, then judge each anime based on what they present, to give an honest and fair rating.

I think OP is actually interested in the production process that causes the shadow effect, ignoring is ok for casual viewers like me, but doesn’t explain anything.

Oh I see, thanks for explaining.

Artist here 🙋🏻‍♀️ It looks like lazy work to me. Though it does carry your eye to the focal point (their faces) at times, it’s completely unnatural and distracting. The animation in general isn’t great, and they use still frames a lot. So sorry to say, I don’t think they had a readon for it. They just didn’t want to put in the work.

although it could look cool, I think it's very distracting since it's so jarring and often doesn't make sense in the environment. it feels like a lazy illusion of depth. I think if they could execute the idea better, it would be a visually pleasing way to naturally guide the viewer's eyes to the focal point of the scene.

As an artist... it pisses me off honestly. It alone made me consider dropping the show XD. It's not a stylistic choice it's just them being lazy. Generally when you use an overlay shadow like that, it's over the entire scene as a single shadow that's cast over everything to represent maybe something large looming overhead. But for some reason they apply it individually to the characters where it makes literally no sense and they use it way too often in situations where it just shouldn't be. It's like they just didn't care. Seriously midday out in the open and for some reason the characters have this shadow over them... and for some reason, for every person the shadow is cast the same way with no regards to the actual environment and how it would affect them. I would really love to meet the people who signed off on this.

Edit: On a side note, had they used it properly and only when they were outside next to buildings... it probably would look fine. I just don't understand why they did it this way. It's like they wanted to use it as some quick way to add depth or mood. But to be honest, with how bad it is... it would have been better if they didn't do it at all.

I just noticed while watching episode 6, I can't look away anymore! it's become like a mini game to spot shadows that don't make sense.

What's best is they aren't even consistent across shots, with characters in the same exact position, going from a closeup to a full shot, the shadows completely change position and dimension.
It's like they blindly threw them in. Very lazy imo.

The Anime became a pain to watch for me. The most common fails in an Anime Adaption can be: Overusing CGI. Failing the Pacing.

I was happy to notice, that the Pacing in this Anime was quite well (compared to its source material, the Light Novel). And so far, no CGI. I thought the worst enemies of an Anime Adapation were defeated this way. But I was so wrong.

It feels like the Studio saved as much money as possible, by offering as little animation as possible. Most of the time it feels like I am watching still images. And to make it even worse, those random shadows all over the characters plus the permanent blur/unsharpness towards the edges of the Anime (as if it is losing focus, like cameras do when trying micro photography). It also feels like the Anime was just upscaled from 480p to 1080p with one of the better upscaling tools.

After having read some of the Light Novel, I was convinced by the Adaption's pacing so far (reached episode 7). But the mentioned visual flaws make it very hard for me to watch. Currently, I am only watching it for the sake of the good enough Adaption pacing.
