| To be quite honest, this was probably my favorite chapter in the entire manga so far. Seeing Hiura be so honest with his mother was a strong moment to me. Whenever someone needs to announce something complicated to their parents, relatives or what-have-you, there's always tension surrounding how they will react to it. I know how it is, as I've gone through similar. While Hiura is not transgender, the "talk" felt a bit like it. Explaining why he became uncomfortable in his body once all the boys around him got their spurt while he didn't, and how dressing and presenting like a girl in public helped him regain a lot of confidence and make friends... to me, it was this beautiful moment of acceptance from his mother that felt liberating. One of the many things I enjoy about this series is that the author doesn't go out of their way to create hatable characters that try to bring the main character(s) down. In a lot of similar media, a character will typically be introduced with the purpose of presenting adversity to the main character/cast. A bully, an unaccepting parent or relative, a jealous secret admirer, etc. I was quite afraid of Hiura's parents becoming that upon learning of their son's changes. Thankfully, it didn't become that. (At least for now. We don't know about the father.) |
