[spoiler] imo I don't think it was necessary to Arnheid die
I know that she will be with her family in another world, but for someone who has never seen any happiness in this world, I would like justice to be done and happiness in this world as well for her. I think that after Einar goes to kill Ketil and Torfin stops him, she should have woken up at the same moment. and in the end of episode 23 go to Iceland with Torfin and Einar and live with Einar, then according to Torfin's words about Vinland, finally realize that there is a place where she can live without suffering in next arc.
I enjoyed every scenes of vinland saga, but this scene I just couldn't handle it, I don't think it's a bad thing. But i think it wasen't necessary, that's all.
So what do you think guys?

Only 1 in 10 deaths in anime are necessary to the story....rest are forced for the story to continue /rid of useless characters....

beautiful, a bit annoying, and i feel like a lot of screentime have been given to her. but i see her importance in thorfinns character development, einar true love for her and to show another the warior cruelty victim as thats what hitting thorfin that war if fucked up

This is horribal lol. It was necessary to give einer and thorfinn a proper resolve and reason to go to Vinland. So that her wishes of wanting to go to a place that’s free can come true. Have u read the manga? Spoilers, they literally name the village in Vinland after her.
She acted as a vechile for einar and thorfinns development, and it put a neet little bow on the themes of the show.
Def one of the takes of all time ๐Ÿ’€

@24846 Even without Arnheid, Thorfinn wanted to do something like this. And I also said that when Arnheid passed out and Thorfinn and Einar talked to her about Einar's love and Thorfinn told her about Vinland and then Einar goes to kill Ketil and Thorfinn stopped him. If Arnheid had woken up at the same time, there wouldn't have been a problem with the character development of Thorfinn and Einar, because she already gave them the reason to go to Vinland and for Thorfinn to go and stop the king. I mean, if Arnheid survives, when they see and know all her sufferings and when they were with her until the last moment of her life, it wouldn't affect the story anymore and the story continued according to its own routine. Even if they call that village by her name or another name.

But I haven't read manga, maybe I'm wrong if I see the next arc

Arnheid is most a tragic character of this season, i mean she didn’t have to die like that but her death strengthen the relationship of Thorfinn and Einer, and also affects the idea of Thorfinn to create a land of without war and no slavery. Idk weather it was necessary or unnecessary but it was really important for the story.

You will realize this more if you are caught up to the manga.

@nishant0 the idea was before the arnheid's death. I watched vinland saga yesterday and i remember everything about it. But probably you're right, I haven't read manga.

@Zero01guard yeah, thats true, but what i mean is that it trigger his idea even more, it was at Arnheid's grave when we finally decided to create a land of no slavery (Vinland).

I feel arnheid was a plot device. Supposed to inspire Einar and Thorfinn and also is used to develop Ketil and her husband.
As a character of her own though, I didn't really care for her. Her death. It was just there. She needed to die to give Thorfinn more reason to search for Vinland, as well as inspire Einar to come with Thorfinn. But it wasn't sad, didn't it at all. I felt she was used to develop characters rather than her being her own. Which to be fair, the author of the manga still tried to make her a well written character but to me she was a plot device. Simply a character used to drive the plot forward in multiple ways. She did need to die though imo.

I don't think every death even needs to be necessary or important to the plot. People die, particularly during Viking times, just an unfortunate fact of life.

@Saracuse I know, but she's a little bit different, she lost her husband and child and suffered so much.
She lost everything that she wanted. In life all she gets was pain.
My favorite character in vinland is askeladd, but his death was amazing, I have no problem with it. But arnheid wasn't necessary to die at all.

Such a shame Makoto killed her off, although, I could see why he had to

She is a device for the author to show the reader that this world is cold and indifferent toward human suffering. She has done nothing wrong, yet the world didn't care and keep on make her life miserable. This kind of tragedy actually does happen in this world. I think the author doesn't kill character willy nilly. He is very intentional with character's death most of the time. I don't think it is bad to portray this world as it is. When arnheid ask if there is a place where there is no suffering, It is not only a question to Thorfinn, but to us hundred of years in the future. Can we promise such a place, where people don't fight among themselves? Have we found Vinland even with all our technological achievement? Without her death, episode 23 wouldn't be that powerful.

It was necessary for sake of Einar's development, it helped him go one big step closer to Torfinn's philosophy and mindset
