It's the best-animated show of the season. Is it because it's not sus?

My brother in Christ, your list is empty.

And to reply to the original thread: yes. I doubt people even watch seasonals seriously and not for sequels/wanted adaptations. Check out the seasonal tab and filter by members, haven't checked in a while but I'm pretty sure Vinland Saga is taking the ranking there.

I think a lot of the fan service moments in episode 1 drove people off watching especially as the shows focus is on a now highschool girl. the show on Anikore (basically Japanese MAL) is actually the highest rated show of the season.

Most of its marketing is just word of mouth, and it lacks mass appeal like most battle shounen.  Still an excellent anime though.

he might be referring to Anikore where this anime is rated as No 1 this season. could also be a personal opinion.

I don't think it's mainly because of the fanservice.

The anime was not even hyped, at least in the audience outside of Japan. No one knew about the manga either except for the niche gender benders fanbase. Those who watched the trailer probably felt weird about a sex change series, and with this tendency to talk about politics shit even in anime, they probably decided to scrap it.

fair enough. I think it's because I know of a few people that dropped it due to fan service. Marketing is probably the big one of it. I guess I was just using analytic data for this so my bad

the general concept already limits the reach by being a bit out there, but episodes 1 and 2 did a lot of weird sussy uncomfortable stuff that drove off a lot of the people who might have liked it had they known it would be a wholesome story about getting a second chance at life and mending your relationship with your family. it's like if K-on opened with a bunch of gore and death for 2 episodes, then turned onto the slice of life Moe show we know today

As someone who went in blind for this show, I did feel bored by the fanservice and the potential for more of it given how the story starts out. But now it's become a relaxing version of ReLife so it maintains my interest so far in seeing how Mahiro learns from his experience and becomes a better person and brother later on.

My opinion, yeah, is that almost everything is that Onimai is not hyped by the community in general, in addition to the fact that many works on sex change are not common in this industry, so it is not attractive to the average fan. Those who are uncomfortable with the fanservice is another matter, but as far as I can see they are a small minority and the least of the problems among those who watch the anime.

My older brother shits on me for watching it, but I think for most people who don’t branch out to a lot of anime and understand most anime tropes, they just see an ecchi yuri about lolis. I mean… at times it can be. But it’s still a wholesome slice of life which is flying under a lot of peoples radar. Just doesn’t really have the mass appeal of almost every other show

to most people it's just an interesting / degenerate concept, like "it's funny it exist but i don't plan on watching it" kind of deal.
also the excess fan service at the first few episodes may be misleading, I personally didn't like that about it but since i read the manga I knew it wouldn't stay that way

It’s an ecchi slice of life. It’s not like that’s what is popular right now. This definitely has a cult following, and I don’t doubt it will boost the manga sales and get good BD numbers.

They would be disappointed if they expected the manga to be as ecchi or as "lolicon" as the anime though. lol

Yes, that is true. But imo that will probably have people invest more in it to get a season two. The anime has been extremely good as a unique adaptation, from animation to VA.

I can definitely picture the anime having some good BD numbers, they better go all out with the hot springs trip to seal the deal!

They definitely know how to animate the big personalities of some of the characters lol. But as much as I am enjoying the fun ecchi, I really like the softer moments and genuinely hope we get a season two eventually.

I don't know why the anime's not popular. I only knew about the manga since February last year, as I saw some users on here reading it. Not a lot of people that are replying to the anime's forums are reading the manga I noticed.

I just want them to nail that scene to solidify its greatness and continued interest, the wholesome aspects are naturally its greatest strength.

anything with oniichan in the title is an auto sus for me bro but i think the real reason is, ppl who dont know how studios work think this is keeping bind from making more mushoku tensei when in reality, thats not how it works.

Anime is mainstream, and now western "sensibilities" have infested anime communities.

Which is very odd considering that Vinland Saga first season was all about following a "child soldier" really.

But you know, hypocrisy.

Otherwise, yeah, I’m agree. The very first time I see this anime, my thinking was “Just another gender bend loli trash anime”. People usually don’t like gender bend and loli anime so much because it just bad, low budget and tons of fan service in the past (I know there’s some good one too but just randomly take 100 gender bend and loli anime to see how much good anime you got. It just a few, or sometimes all you got was bad anime). But I think, this year was the time for gender bend became great again!

Feel like two big reasons is the fact that it isn't shounen and it has ecchi. A lot of people gravitate to good fights and obviously this is a slice of life. So that leaves it to the slice of life/moe enjoyers.

Personally I picked it up cause I thought the art style was super cute but was a bit suprised/a little off put by the fanservice (still am at times). However I've watched plenty of anime with these kinda moments so I can look past it often and enjoy the story line, others simply can't which I understand.

It's chilled out on fanservice compared to the first couple episodes but those two are probably the only ones people were willing to give a try so they dropped it.

It's probably the most popular seasonal show in Japan.  First on NicoNico from episode 1, most pre-orders of BDs, and 2nd in streaming.  It's just not popular abroad, which is fine.  This one was intended for the Japanese audience.  There is some question whether there would even be an international release.  Bind has found its demo, otakus, and it is loved by them.  They buy the merch and I'm pretty sure this will get a second season if Bind wants to make one in between Mushoku Tensei seasons.  I wouldn't be surprised if this one beats Bochi the Rock for total BD sales.  It will beat Chainsawman for sure.  It's closing in on 10,000 as of episode 5 I believe.

"Vinland Saga," by the way, is bombing in Japan.  To think MAL represents the broader anime community is ludicrous.  This is a small bubble that is very unrepresentative of the average viewer globally.  I don't even pay attention to the rating on MAL as it is so infected with people in an echo chamber.  This is a pretty mainstream story among Japanese otaku at least.  The manga is very popular but largely unknown here.
