I've noticed that a good number of the people watching sasamiya rn are either manga-readers from the start, or those that enjoyed the anime from the first few episodes and so they've read and caught up to the manga. Which shouldn't be a problem since this is probably a trend in most manga-to-anime-adaptations, and the manga's real good either way. It's actually been real faithful to the source material, so much so that much of the complaints I see come from anime-onlies, especially on things like the pacing of the show and certain character arcs. Whenever peeps do bring this up the common reasoning I see is: "read the manga" or "it's not like that", which I get can be annoying to hear but I can't blame them since most people have already experienced the whole show for themselves through the manga. I guess what I'm getting at is, I've noticed the manga-readers of sasamiya watch this show with rose-tinted lenses that lets them complement the feeling of satisfaction that they got from the manga through the anime adaptation. So how about yall anime-onlies, enjoying the show so far?

I'm an anime-only. I never had a problem with the pacing and the character arcs, it delivers. Of course, there are always things in every show that fans can be nitpicky (including me). However, I can't spot something major or annoying that could potentially spoil our entertainment, besides something against our personal preferences that would dissatisfy a minority.

ive read some parts of the manga and i can fairly say it's really great as an adaptation overall, SOL is expected to be fast (with my prior reading experience on other new gen SOLs e.g aharen-san, komi-san, shikimori, etc) so i wasn't surprised with the pacing issue but at least they were able to give an essence of bl and such, i did find the effects to be overbearing but it eventually grew on me.

mhm, I also think deen went overkill on the floating thingies but I never really had high hopes for the animation given that it was made by a studio infamous for its animation TT. but same tho, I'm quite okay with it now and they're even using it less often now.

main reason why I made this thread was cause of the sasaki character arc forum thread. being a manga reader myself I think there were some scenes that were adapted too intensely from how I remember and enjoyed it from the manga (hence the latter part of my first post). the most prominent thing that comes to mind is the after-valentines day scene where sasaki contemplates on how many guys gave miyano chocolates-- he didn't sound like he wanted to beat them up from how i remembered it and the music and tone used was too dark TT. Parts that I enjoyed from the manga or didn't think much of like sasaki grabbing miyano when ogasawara or his ex-classmate was about to touch him or the most recent episode made me flinch and cringe instead of enjoying it. it's probably just an adaptation problem where the mood kinda goes awry from the mood set in the manga, but I've yet to see another manga reader feel the same way about the show to confirm. that's why i kinda relate to the anime-only watchers in their dissatisfactions haha

I see, I answered on this thread too from the POV of an anime-only if you wanna check it out. I don't think it's a bad thing but I feel you. Of course a manga reader would be displeased if there was a subversion of the original story.

Unfortunately there aren’t many good bl anime out there, but I’d recommend Doukyusei, Umibe no Étranger, and Given. Honestly they are the only ones that I don’t find them disturbing like the other BLs so I highly recommend them.

The 1st twos are movies so you should purchase them (though I heard that Umibe is on Funimation just DO NOT WATCH THE DUB) and given is on Crunchyroll.

if u want:
trashy yaoi: dakaichi
edgy, badly adapted BL (but they're soul mates!): No.6
kinda on the line of BL but still really good: Yuri on ice
not quite BL but still really good: Banana Fish
a great movie: doukyuusei
a pretty good SoL (that kinda drags in the middle): Given
the most chaotic and godlike show to exist: gakuen handsome
the good shit (it's action/mystery): Tian Guan Ci Fu

bonus: Devilman Crybaby and Evangelion aren't BL but do have very plot important non-straight romances. I thought I'd mention them cuz they're great shows
bonus bonus: if ur into that kind stuff Tiger & Bunny isn't BL but has way too many BL doujinshi lol... (and is a super good show so it's just a normal rec tbh)

Umibe no Etranger kinda sucks tho. Just because it doesn't follow along the gross tropes that most other yaoi have doesn't excuse the fact that it has awful pacing, annoying and archetype-ey characters, and hardly any plot

the people before me mentioned most of the good/well-known ones already, but i'd just like to add Saezuru Tori wa Habatakanai if you want a more mature take on bl apart from typical highschool romances. The relationship between the pairings are built pretty solid i'd say, altho if you do decide to watch this be warned that this has themes of bdsm, rape, and nymphomania yet are otherwise handled well

apart from that, I can count the number of bl that i'd willing watch and enjoy with one hand TT. that's why I enjoy reading bl manga more

Anime only here!😊
I do really badly with romance adaptations if I know the source material (because anime almost never manages to live up to the levels of sweetness my mind conjures up, lol) so I swore I wouldn't read the manga or the spin-off until I've finished watching the anime 😅

So far I enjoy it a lot, though I've recently bumped it down from 9 to 8 because it's starting to drag on a bit.

Probably an unpopular opinion, but:
I just adore how unapologetically shoujo it is, with all the colorful sparklies and pastel shading and blushing galore~

Anime-only here. I'm enjoying this much more than I thought I would. I initially rated it a 7 and I have it at 9 now. The pacing felt a bit rushed on the first couple of episodes, but I feel like it's slowed down a lot by now and it's becoming increasingly more enjoyable for me. I'm like one cute moment away from rating this a 10, if we have a good kiss by the end of the season my heart will explode. I have to agree with a comment up there that says how unapologetically shoujo this anime is, I love that, it just radiates comfort. Give me all the sparkles you got, I love it. Every week I'm tempted to look for the manga, but I'm trying to wait until the anime finishes.

Anime-only here and I enjoy it thus far(ep9). My only little complaint is that its kinda slowly-progressing, but that does not make show any less good for me.

Anime-only here (watched through ep9 as of this post). I was hoping this show would either 1. show them becoming a couple a lot faster instead of spending half the show dealing with Miyano's "I read BL but I don't think I'm gay???" angst and we show more development with them after they have become a couple, or 2. spend more time showing them building up their friendship before becoming a couple with either Sasaki's confession taking place later or the two of them mutually realizing their feelings for each other.

Instead this show has focused so much on the time period between Sasaki's confession and Miyano's response which feels like kind of the worst part to focus on for so many episodes. I've been that person on the receiving end of a confession before, I know firsthand that angsting over whether I wanted to stay just friends or try out a relationship with them was not a fun time, so having half the season be focused on Miyano's struggle with this (with the added level of "I read BL as a hobby but I thought I was straight???") has been kind of... meh.

I might not feel as strongly if I were a manga reader that knew whether and for how long the manga continued past whatever point we will get to in the anime, but knowing we only have 12 episodes plus the OVA, it definitely feels like something that's been adapted from a manga panel by panel instead of cutting some content in order to speed up how much of the manga is covered in the anime. It's already giving me more of a "they become a couple in the last episode/read the manga ending" instead of a "cliff's notes of the series" vibe. I don't really want them to rush the adaptation though, it just feels like it would benefit a lot from being a two cour with the pacing it currently has. If it were a two cour anime where the first cour is them becoming a couple and the second cour was developing their relationship after becoming a couple, I might get behind the anime's pacing more knowing there was much more up ahead.

I think this show might work better as a binge because then watching all of this would only be drawn out over 4-5 hours instead of over 12 weeks (I guess the weekly pacing puts me even more in Sasaki's shoes of the frustration of how long he's waiting for Miyano's response). Not to say this show doesn't have value, as BL doesn't have much in the way of slice-of-life fluffy romance anime, but I wish it was treading more interesting and maybe even more comedic ground.

Episode 1 was weirdly paced. All of the shoujo sparkles throughout the series are overdone and distracting. But I at least have to give credit to having a BL without relying so much on the standard problematic BL tropes in the characters themselves (that said I do think the abundance of references to BL tropes in the manga the characters read/reference detracts from the progressiveness of the characters existing without constant reference to whether BL tropes are being followed or subverted. It's not done in a comedic enough way to warrant existing at all).

Sasamiya walks so future BL anime can fly. Meanwhile, Given is spotted already soaring overheard.
