Neutral pronouns are how you refer to someone whose gender you don't know. It's not "being politically correct," it's using the English language correctly.

True. Maybe it’s when it’s in reference to a specific person or the specific person is the subject of the sentence using they or them doesn’t sound right to me but in those cases it does. I think when it’s already established that you are referring to a single person then, they/them is correct as gender neutral pronoun. But when it is not known if you a speaking about a single person like in, “that’s what they said” it seems like a collective or group of people are being referenced.
I’ve never met anyone who wants to be referred to as they and them as opposed to he/him or she/her so I’ve never faced this dilemma before.

Najimi goes back and forth saying they are a girl/boy in the dub, I don't see how anything has really changed. If other people refer to Najimi as "they" it's kind of because they don't have an exclusively male/female gender, not because it is politically correct. Najimi is technically non-binary by cannon, but don't take that too seriously, because anime is more often aiming to do wacky things with gender rather than to portray such things in any kind of realistic or legitimate way.

Gender is basically irrelevant for a "trap" character, the relevant information is that this is a male (sex) who looks like a girl and or dresses like one. Now, since trap is a comedic trope, more serious portrayals of trans or non-binary individuals should exist outside of that trope, but they are exceedingly rare for anime. Najimi is a trap character, and should be treated as such, posing serious questions about their gender identity is unreasonable.
