I've personally never played "Akane Maniax", but it's supposed to be canon (Taking place right before Muv-Luv Extra) and there are some cameos, so if you'd like to see Takeru living his happy life before he ends up in the hellish nightmare that is this Alternative world you can check it out.

It's not directly related to Muv-Luv and serves as an OVA to Kimi ga Nozomu Eien, so don't expect anything too great (Honestly, it's overally pretty cartoonish and meh) but I think that just for the cameos it's worth it.
The closest thing to Muv-Luv Extra we'll probably ever get (Even if Muv-Luv cast is there like just for 20 seconds).

Akane Maniax will not make any sense if one hasn't seen the parent story beforehand. It doesn't even tell the viewer anything about Takeru anyway.

I've personally just fast-forwarded it to see Takeru and his crew. Mainly for Ayamine with the octopus on her head though.

It's still nice to see them casually going to school and a kind Marimo with Yuuko, even if the story isn't about them.

So Akane Maniax is a weird thing. it is cannon to Muv-Luv, and was created specifically to link the Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien (Rumbling Hearts in english) stuff to the Muv-Luv stuff. Muv Luv Extra has alot of references to it. Akane Maniax was the first instance where Takeru's team pop up so watching it will give you a taste of what Muv-Luv extra was like. Also characters from Akane Maniax and Kimi ga Nozomu Eien do pop up and play a roll in Muv-Luv Alternative so they're worth a watch.

I would say though, if you're going to dive that deep into it...you might as well play the Muv Luv VN trilogy.

BONUS: the Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien VN is being officially translated, so there's always that to look forward to as well....

Honestly this is the most merciful option. Of course I'd love nothing more than to handcuff anime-onlies to a chair and force them to read VNs but watching Akane Maniax is what i consider happy middle ground to avoid my inevitable arrest for a time.

This adaptation does such a poor job at making the viewer care at all about anything going on so anything that would give a potential viewer even a measly look at what Takeru has lost is better than what the MLA anime is serving on its own.

Age is trying to revive as franchise as they can now. They started it with KimiKisetsu in 2011, now they're planning to do a reboot for KimiNozo as well. Makes me wonder what else are they rebooting next.

Why do all this bullshit of "giving a taste of what Extra is like?" Just read the bloody thing proper.
Well I for one already loved Lain.

I think that most people here are rather young (probably younger than 18, majority younger than 15), so they might have not enough attention span and patience (the reason why they can't read books/novels and rather read manga and manga adaptations of novels) to read the visual novel.

Well that's just a problem of their own they need to sort out. If they want to know what the story was like before it shifted to the Alternative world, the VN is the way to do it, whether they like it or not. Trying these incomplete "tastes" just to go out of their way to avoid it is just silly.
