I just finished watching the special and oh boy was I scared to click "play" button; thanks to the low score and abundance of "WTF?" threads on MAL. I thought this would be a disaster! But, is it?

1) Half of the episode is a recap.
2) We waited so long for this?

Both of these are understandable reasons to why people are pissed. It really is baffling why it took them this long to give us a 15 minute long original episode. Did they run out of money or perhaps plot?

Now the big one:

3) This is the end?

This question seems to be the top reason why people are raging so profoundly, therefor, my question is...

Is this really THE end?

To me, the last shot in particular (with Ai smiling), seemed like an obvious tease... It's a "to be continued" ending.

Am I missing something? Was it confirmed that there will definitely be no continuation, ever???

If there is no such info, this special doesn't deserve the hate and bashing it currently receives. I personally wasn't too pissed with the recap as quite some time passed since I've finished the original so it helped me remember things.

I would kindly ask for any source that confirms that there won't be any continuations. Are there any?

This was an anime original with no source material so they can continue if they want. I think that IS the end. Though it would be cool to get a movie or OVA and see how she brings back Neiru and beats Frill (because you know she will).

There's so much that can be used to advance the plot. Frill, both Accas, Neiru. I think Neiru doesn't necessarily want to become human. She's an AI like Frill so she may well be faking it. The situation she was in (with 3 vs 1) I think she made a pretty logical decision for an AI. Right now it feels like she joined Frill's side and took her bait, but she may well be doing this to "get close" to Frill and backstab her when Ai eventually comes to save her.
We may see Momoe battling her fear and joining Ai's side for the sake of friendship above all.
Rika is already itching for a fight so she'd join Ai without question.
Accas may figure out how to stop Frill's OP henchmen, while girls gradually become stronger.
With all the possibilities, I think it will be a grave sin for the studio/director/author/whoever's responsible to abandon this project. It doesn't make sense why they'd make this special if they don't intend to continue story...

I'm not going to lose hope until someone from the top confirms the end.

Almost nothing would be correct way to say it. That is exactly why I think that the story has to have a continuation. Original anime ended "half-way", and the special did the same. Since this is not based on manga/novel it would honestly be insulting to leave the viewers with THIS kind of "final" episode.

YES. "The End". Right on the end card.

The subtitle is translating what the girls say "owari!"
Noun. 終 お わり • (owari) end; conclusion; finish

I appreciated the recap as it's been a long time since episode 12 and I didn't remember a lot of the series.

I think this was the end not only because of the end card, but due to how the group broke apart one by one at the end. Everyone's story is solved to some degree, except for Ai's. Momo is sad about her friend but not close enough with Neiru to go back in and suffer more PTSD for her. Likewise for Rika, who's also too afraid to go back even if she wants the "old" Chiemi back. Ai is the only one who goes back, since she's found a new goal and another girl to fight for.

I'm unsure what was implied for Neiru at the end. Did Ai make a parallel between the rat and Neiru, with both being used as test subjects? Was Neiru "not human" in a metaphorical sense, in that she felt hollow inside? I assume she was lured in by Frill, either as a plaything, sacrifice, or bait for Ai. And I wonder if it's just a coincidence that Kotobuki and Ai both had heterochromia.

Neiru wasn't human she was an AI like Frill.
Ai realizes at the end her real friendships with the girls were the important thing, not bringing back her fake friend Koito, regrets rejecting Neiru and runs back to go get her. And just look at the end card, she does and they are all friends again.

Huh, interesting, and makes sense. Thanks for the explanation.

I mean, the end card can be just a commemorative picture of them together, it doesn't imply a "friends again" ending necessarily.
