I remember watching some of this on Netflix but it was under the title Robotech, but from what I've read it was mostly original. I also remember there being a lot more than 36 episodes. I'm not sure which version Netflix had but I remember it being somewhat different than what listed here. I was wondering if they are the same or if Netflix had an alternate version and what's what.

I don’t remember all the exact details, but basically: When some American service back in the day acquired the rights to Macross they ended up adding in two other shows which are completely separate and nothing to do with Macross and decided to clump them all together into one show since some characters and themes were vaguely similar and could make for a decent show to children who watched it. All of Macross make up the first third of Robotech, so you could probably just watch that of Robotech if you’re just wanting Macross and not the other two random shows. I don’t remember the shows, but I believe they were less than stellar anime and not original works made by an American studio.

As far as I know this is the only english dub version of Macross, as Robotech. So like shows like Pokémon and YuGiOh which are edited to different extents (different ops/eds, scenes cut, objects changed like cultural and religious ones, and most or all blood etc.) to fit the standards and make it on the air for children, Macross was no different. Since it’s not a 1:1 from the English version and Japanese version, not even including the fact Robotech has episodes from two different shows in it, Netflix would have to acquire the rights to one or the other. The eng dub version of anime that received one are normally prioritized too and likely easier to license than a show that hasn’t aired overseas.

Jesus Crust, that sounds like a legal nightmare that would make for a great ace attorney level but a hellish adaptation. Remember when One Piece used to have a 4kids edit? I wish I didn't.

Also, both our favorites are Eureka Seven, based.
