...Because, just judging based off the weekly audience reactions alone, it seems to be having the opposite effect in actual practice in that it's increasingly riling people up.

It definitely is supposed to be, but the last episode had the protagonist making some really questionable decisions which serve as extremely impractical advice to the viewer. And it's only one episode, overall the series has been very iyashikei so it's all good.

I’ve really enjoyed this anime. It’s quiet and peaceful. I’ve enjoyed how this anime is just about a solitary girl who makes friends once she gets a Super Cub, and how it’s affected her life. Not much drama other than the last episode. I think the protagonist should have called for more help and she seemed rather unemotional to the whole situation.

Isn't that how people should have expected her to likely be though given her established character shown in everything up to this point?

True she is unemotional, but she was almost robotic in how she treated her friend. I can understand being calm under fire, but how about some warmth or compassion after the fact? I’m not being critical of her, just a human observation. That said I do like all the characters. I’ve not read the light novel, so I’m sure I’m missing a lot of the story.
It’s interesting and I find myself concerned for her like when she traveled that long way for the school trip, riding the cub in winter, is she eating right? 😊

It became comedy after episode 5 and I don't even mind.

One Piece episode 914 & 915 & 1027 were a mistake and 957 brought the salvation - FMmatron

Kind of, it's relaxing but also very comedy focused, like Yuru Camp.

Calling it full fledged iyashikei is not correct, because some episodes/scenes might leave you angry or disappointed.

That may depend on the audience member in question. I personally felt relaxed/soothed the whole way through, but then, I found Koguma something like my spirit animal.

I think it does qualify as Iyashikei. Koguma is a broken child at the beginning of our story: abandoned by her mother, poor, impoverished. The Super Cub is an instrument of healing for our orphaned Koguma. And many episodes provide a comforting, relaxing mood for the viewer. Some anime might be described as being in the Iyashikei genre. This one might be described as having Iyashikei as a theme.
