My friend and I finished That Time I was reincarnated as Slime season 2. This was my second time watching it and I couldn’t help but compare Rimuru’s personality traits with other isekai protagonists. I saw a Ranker post about top isekai protagonists and Rimuru being ranked number 1 and that left me scratching my head. So I wanted to ask members on here (without giving manga spoilers) just how exactly will Rimuru react in the world of ReZero, Saga of Tanya of Evil, Rising of The Shield Hero, cautious hero, etc of switched as the main protagonist. I don’t hate the series by any means, it’s a series about a mentor who died and is reincarnated in another world as a near invulnerability, overpowered slime that’s has the trusty Great Sage easy mode tutorial walkthrough guide ability to help assist Rimuru to have an omnipotent understanding of the world he lives in. On the other hand, without these abilities...this catharsis story falls apart and becomes just another generic isekai series. But if I have to rank the protagonist against other isekai protagonists, Rimuru is the weakest character by far who shines when things go right... and is willing to throw his goodwill and fundamental beliefs away when things go bad. Lastly I want to reiterate that I don’t hate the series or the character, I kind of want to be proven wrong. Is there a character underneath the overpowered and carefree leadership willing to grind and work hard like cautious hero? A character that can be literally kidnapped by nazis and be used as experiments to become a tool of war like Tanya? A character that can endure everyone hating him and bullied and overcome of being robbed of everything over lies & manipulation and still become a hero like rising of the shield hero? Can Rimuru endure the cycle of torment of being tortured and killed and to watch everyone he cares about die over and over again with the sense of dread that nothing he does will matter and still make the impossible possible like ReZero? I don’t think so... and I look forward to responses. |

You are right to be confused by that. I am too. Rimuru is not by any means a great character. He is not better than some other isekai protagonists. But I don't think this show is supposed to be a show with great character development and great writing. Just enjoy it for what it is. Also, don't trust that Ranker post, it probably doesn't have any credibility and is mostly opinion based. I do think Rimuru is cool and a likable character tho. |

Rinmaru learned hard in 2nd season that "In order to preserve peace, you must be willing to fight". Besides the heavy power up since season one, that was the only major improvement to his character and it was huge. In 1st season he was just a bland and boring Mary Sue like any other. Obviously, he wouldn't be bothered by having to off some upstarts in ReZero or Youjo Senki. The "cycle of torment" you described would only hasten the process. |

And to answer the 2nd part of this post, rimuru will probably hold up quite well in rising of the shield hero and cautious hero (the ending still made me hella sad) but in re zero, that’s something to be taken to consideration, because I don’t think rimuru’s bubbly personality will actually handle being in a endless cycle of death and not knowing whether your actions will have a positive effect and is more likely to have negative drawbacks and seeing everyone you love die over and over and over again. |

That’s the post that made me think and even on here, Rimuru has over 12,000 favorites. I still disagree about Rimuru no longer being a Mary Sue. In a way that is how Rimuru gains power. You’re not gonna see Rimuru busting out crunches and lifting weights or even practice swinging a sword. If we compare other isekai protagonists, the character in this series most fitting would be Gobta. He’s putting in the work and effort to gain power slowly vs Rimuru who has the predator skill. Also Rimuru has great Sage or now called Raphael to help assist Rimuru interact with the work with omnipotence. If you ask me Rimuru is a bigger Mary Sue than Ainz... Ainz had to grind and pay 2 win with his guild and anyone who played MMORPG games know how difficult and competitive that is.kfsilver89 said: yea that post probably isn’t fact-based and more opinionated, because if you compare rimuru as a character to people like naofumi or subaru, nine times out of ten, I’ll say naofumi or subaru are the better character, don’t get me wrong Rimuru is definitely not a Mary Sue isekai protag now (well in s1 he used to) and s2 really made him grow as a isekai character, but all in all my point is that you shouldn’t take that source at face valueMy friend and I finished That Time I was reincarnated as Slime season 2. Rembe said: well my question for the forum is how will Rimuru’s personality handle other isekai series. I don’t want to knock a character based simply by the world the character lives in. As I said, I’m my original statement without Rimuru’s overpowering skills the story falls apart and just becomes a generic isekai series. If he never met tempest, had predator ability, or great Sage then he’ll just be slime.kfsilver89 said: Rembe said: kfsilver89 said: yea that post probably isn’t fact-based and more opinionated, because if you compare rimuru as a character to people like naofumi or subaru, nine times out of ten, I’ll say naofumi or subaru are the better character, don’t get me wrong Rimuru is definitely not a Mary Sue isekai protag now (well in s1 he used to) and s2 really made him grow as a isekai character, but all in all my point is that you shouldn’t take that source at face valueMy friend and I finished That Time I was reincarnated as Slime season 2. |

I’m gonna ignore the forum post and just answer the question in the title if that’s alright lol. I got excited to theorize what would happen if Rimuru were in other worlds when I read it and don’t really want to get into a debate over which of the protagonists are better. In the world of Re:Zero, rimuru would probably stumble around a lot like Subaru at first, but more so with the intention of assessing his current situation rather than start off his awesome isekai fantasy life with a heroine and all that nonsense. Assuming he makes it to the same alleyway (he prolly wouldn’t end up in the same place, but why not for the heck of it) and has to deal with the thugs; he’d probably try to talk his way out of it for a bit but fail. Then he’d be rescued by Emilia just as Subaru was, and would likely thank her and ask if there was anything he can do in return. Being that he isn’t as pushy as Subaru though, he’d probably give up on helping after conveying what the thief looked like b/c he’s a normal dude and realizes there’s nothing else he can really do. So then he’d look for someone else to help him figure out what he needs to know about the world. Maybe he runs into Reinhard, who should be around that area at that time. In that case, Rimuru would likely tell Reinhard that he is a foreigner and is completely lost, and Reinhard will be obliged to help him. What likely happens then is Reinhard brings Rimuru back to his place. Maybe Rimuru mentions Emilia and the emblem thief to Reinhard along the way, and Reinhard goes to help Emilia after leaving Rimuru at his mansion. While he’s gone Rimuru becomes acquainted with the staff there and learns about the world he’s been put in. He then asks for a job b/c he’s without income, food, drink, shelter, and all the other necessities he needs to live. The staff are hesitant to give him a job, but Reinhard agrees when he learns of the request upon returning. Speaking of his return, Reinhard has brought the thief back with him, Felt. Emilia comes the next day to thank Rimuru for informing Reinhard of her situation, and leaves for Roswal’s mansion immediately. Rimuru then becomes acquainted with both Felt and Reinhard over the course of his stay at the mansion and never learns of his reincarnation ability. Roswal will then be confused, b/c the whatever journal he’s given was wrong and he consequently does not setup all the horrible scenarios for Subaru to go through This takes forever to do lol. Maybe I’ll post again later for one of the other isekai. |

See there’s 2 things that I need clarity: One; are you implying all of this will happen as Rimuru being Satoru Mikami the 37 year old elf fetish human before he turned into Rimuru? And two, are you also implementing that Rimuru will be imbued with the witch of envy scent? There are scenes in the series where because Rimuru is a slime, there’s no facial expressions giving hints on what he is thinking or feeling. Also Satoru’s age will mean he’s limited physically what he can do and the connections Subaru made just won’t happen for Satoru. Either way, Emilia is dead... and the world will be approached its end. Reinhard’s power alone could nearly fold anyone like a lawn chair. Even Rimuru as a demon lord. But the real question is if Rimuru did learn about his reincarnation ability... just how would he be able to handle the mental trauma. Where will the checkpoint be? Let’s say, Satoru turned into Subaru. How would he handle Roswal? |

Rembe said: And to answer the 2nd part of this post, rimuru will probably hold up quite well in rising of the shield hero and cautious hero (the ending still made me hella sad) but in re zero, that’s something to be taken to consideration, because I don’t think rimuru’s bubbly personality will actually handle being in a endless cycle of death and not knowing whether your actions will have a positive effect and is more likely to have negative drawbacks and seeing everyone you love die over and over and over again. How do you think he'll survive in shield hero? He'd be so confused when Bitch lie and I don't think that Rimuru's goofy personality would handle it... But in cautious hero he'll be A-OK |

For the trauma question you asked on a comment because for the life of me I can’t figure out how to Reply. In re:Zero I think he’ll handle it well, he may get a little down here and there but in the end he’ll always pick himself up. Now would he go crazy from dying all the time and not being able to tell any one? 50/50 because on one hand he keeps a lot of secrets, ex the dragon inside of him and his past, etc. but on the other hand he is a person who’s open about everything, even if he keeps a-lot of secrets. He talks to his people to make sure of what they think. And just wants their opinions in general. There is one thing to consider, he is an adult, 37 I think. So he will generally handle things a better and smarter. Now for your original question, if Rimuru was in the re:zero world I think things would go on the same up Till where Subaru says that he’s Emilia knights out in front of everyone. Rimuru is a kind person, he helps people even if he doesn’t want too. So the beginning will all go the same. And he’ll ask to get a job etc. and he’ll figure things out. Then I don’t know how it will go from here, it will probably just be him being where is needed by Accident. (I also only watched season 1 of Re:zero so far, so I can’t answer for the others) |

(I also only watched season 1 of Re:zero so far, so I can’t answer for the others) Well a few things. 1.) I don’t think he’ll handle things better than Subaru but rather more mature. Especially in season 1 Subaru’s immaturity tend to be a good thing despite cringe moments. 2.) Rimuru will always have the witch of Envy scent, he’ll attract strong enemies and he just doesn’t have the strength as a human to fight them; therefore, he would die and return by death one way or another. The world of ReZero has far more ridiculously over powering enemies than in That Time I was Reincarnated As Slime. I see Rimuru turning to the dark side rather quickly. It’s hard to gauge the personality Rimuru has without the unique skill use of Great Sage and Predator. These abilities completely define the character of Rimuru and without these abilities, there’s no way to determine what kind of person he’ll be in another world. I see Rimuru as an emotionally and mentally fragile person who’s being carried by physical and magical overpowered strengths. Without physical and magical abilities, how Rimuru will react to such large obstacles Subaru faces will be the largest testimony of his true strength. I highly recommend you watch season 2 of ReZero to just see how the enemies of ReZero are far more difficult than in That Time I was Reincarnated as Slime. I’ll argue that even if Rimuru has all of his uniques skills in ReZero... he’ll be folded like a lawn chair just by running into Reinhard. |

I am implying he'll be Satoru Mikami. I had forgotten the name tbh lol. I guess I am implying he'll have the Witch of Envy scent since I said he had the reincarnation power. It wouldn't make since for him to reincarnate in that world if he didn't receive it right? Idk the whole story in Re:Zero, so I couldn't tell you why exactly Subaru reincarnated in it, but I think the Witch of Envy is what made it happen. Idk how Rimuru would handle the trauma. I think the trauma would actually be quite different from Subaru's. Subaru's trauma seems to be mostly psychological but still enhanced by the sensation of death that comes with failure. Rimuru, on the other hand, wouldn't have that same level psychological trauma since he doesn't seem to have anywhere near as much of an ego. He wouldn't come to hate himself as much in failure b/c he doesn't constantly push unrealistic expectations on himself. It could be that he isn't even motivated enough to retry something when he dies, and even if he is, he'd certainly be more willing than Subaru to accept sacrifices to get to a certain point. His trauma would be more focused on the recurring physical feeling of death, and also the feeling of guilt in the sacrifices he's allowed to happen in avoiding it. As for how he'd handle Roswal; I think he'd probably tell him "You overestimate how important Emilia is to me" ... assuming Roswal put him in the same situation as Subaru. He may kill Emilia and Roswal to be done with it. In actuality, Roswal would probably approach Rimuru differently from how he approached Subaru b/c of how different the two are. |

Ya ya your right, I was clearly not thinking when I wrote that post. Another interesting thing is that Rimuru is the way he reacted to his people’s death, especially Shinoa’s. He shows that he’ll do anything if it means a way to get his friends back and safe, so it would be interesting to see what he would do if someone he’s close with in The re:zero world is dead dead. Since we see Rimuru being so easy going with his powers in Slime, I would think he would be the same in Re:Zero. (Like he would think he can protect everyone and everyone is safe since he can reset back to where they aren’t dead, much like how he’s overpowered in slime) Your right it would break him, but I think it would be the death(dead dead) of someone close to him to tip him over, of course having to see people die over and over would mess with him. But I think that would be the tip of the tipping point. If that make sense Another thing to note is that Rimuru has no problem killing people. |

I personally think that Rimuru is the best part of the anime by far and better than most isekai protagonists you mentioned. The whole point of Rimuru's character is that he is an adult with super care-free attitude. The first epsiode clearly stated that he is 37 years old and I believe this is important to know what kind of character he is. Of course he jokes around and stuff but he never reacts in over-dramatic way to bad events and most we saw of that was when his village was literally slaughtered, which was also very mild for other shows if you asked me. Subaru and Naufomi take everything always super seriously. It is not to say that they are not in appropriate settings to do that but it definitely feels very teen oriented and melodramatic at times. Which is funny cause they are way darker in tone (I would personally call them edgy). Tanya on the other hand is an adult in his past life but feels more like a parody to me. Rimuru compliments the themes and atmosphere of slime immensely. He is always thinking of how to improve his country while enjoying his time there. He gets life more than any other isekai protagonist to me. Once he faces a high danger like Milim fighting is his last resort. I think slime even did a parody of these kind of characters like Naofumi through the "otherworlders". It was interesting to see them on the other side shouting non-sense thinking they are the chosen ones. Of course we know how that ended Now slime anime as a whole doesn't exactly focus on Rimuru's character. He is more of a vehicle to navigate the world with. Which makes it necessarily to relate to him as a character. I find this the key to enjoy the whole anime and I think it succeeded with it. I don't think you always need to deconstruct the whole genre and throw you MC through a loop of self-hatred to make him a better-written character. You should look at what the character means to the whole story too. |
