Please ignore this question if there is already a thread about it but I’m truly curious as to what happened Blue Exorcist. When the first season aired I was only a anime only watcher and although the ending was different I enjoyed Blue Exorcist a lot. But after some years I assumed Blue Exorcist was cancelled and would never come back. I’ve heard people say that the ending of season 1 is the reason for Blue Exorcist getting axed, (which may be true) even though I enjoyed it. Then we finally got a season 2 and from what I heard it was more canon to the manga. That being said there is no news for a season 3 (none that I have heard of). So I’m curious why Blue Exorcist got so underrated even though I thought it was extremely popular. Was it truly the ending of season 1 that destroyed it or was it something more???

I was actually thinking about this recently. All the anitubers I watched hyped it up and the manga was selling really well too and yet it just went out like a whimper. I collected the manga for a time but I lost interest. I think it's difficult to make a long-running action Shonen in a modern Japanese setting and keep interest high. The country is too safe, structured and boring. There's no new locations to visit, no adventure to set off on, no journey. I think it's why people are starting to get bored of MHA as well. Blue Exorcist also failed because it didn't have a complex power system like Chakra or Nen that would make fights interesting. There were also only a handful of generic characters so character interaction couldn't carry to series either. Ultimately all it had going for it was a good art style and Sawano OST.

I've heard other explanations like the time between seasons, a lot of people not actually knowing that season 1 was retconed and being disappointed by it, S2 sucking dicks, bad anime sales, mediocre manga, bad manga sales and more. Maybe it's a combination of all of those.

I mean, are we sure it got axed and there's no possibility of a third season?

As far as I know, the manga is still ongoing albeit it just recently came back after a break. It releases monthly though, so it makes sense that we'd have to wait a bit longer to get enough content for a whole new season.

Basically this series is not for the mainstream audience, thus not profitable. It has more of a fullmetal alchemist structure with character building and emotional scenes. Based on the manga, if there was a third season, it would have a very slow and none action start. Now days, if the anime won't have action in every episode, it is not created.
The first season's ending definitely played a part, as it was never established what was canon and what wasn't at the beginning of the second.
This series is one of my favorites but I believe that this is the end of the anime.

Well there was a six year gap between seasons 1 and 2, so I'm not completely ruling out a season 3 just yet... And I heard the manga's selling well, so there might be a chance?

And I really hope so, because after watching both seasons, I started reading the manga starting more or less where the anime ended, but that's actually been somewhat frustrating, because whenever I come across a Mephisto scene, all I can think is: "Damn, Hiroshi Kamiya would play that so well!! I want to see it so bad!!!" xD

Kato-sensei said that working on the anime and manga at the same time was too much for her so she wants to wait before doing any more seasons

Season 01's original ending made it hard to continue, plus at the time they had not yet finished the Kyoto Impure Saga. And it would take almost 12 months from when the anime finished airing, to finish JUST that arc in the manga. So even if they did adapt the Kyoto arc, they would still be stuck with the issue of waiting for the manga to catch up... slowly losing interest and momentum. Better to wait until it's finished, right?

However I guess it was taking too long so they adapted another arc to refresh everyone's memory. And ditched the stupid anime original ending of season one... (YAY)

But now we have to wait, again.
That's okay, though. Am patient.

It's 1 chapter per month now so it could take a long time...
