I had no problems with the last season of attack on titan so far, it seems fine

The first episode of the second season of promised neverland was okay, but not really anything special i think

I read the source material on horimiya and the adaptation will probably be fine

haven't seen Yuru camp

The second season of beastars also started kind of slow so I don't know if I'll continue

first episode of spider isekai was fine but nothing special

First Impressions
The first round of episodes for each show I've been planning to watch is out, so here are my impressions thus far:

  • Shingeki no Kyojin: The Final Season
    So far, this has been the most invested I've been in an airing anime in a long time. While there have been some complaints from others in regards to how MAPPA has been handling this adaptation, I have almost none whatsoever. With the beginning of the final chapter, Attack on Titan is finally putting forth everything its been building up for so many years now. With the latest episode, I'm almost certain this season will be my favorite yet in the series
  • Yakusoku no Neverland 2nd Season
    The first season was pretty neat, but I'm honestly not impressed at all by the first episode of the long awaited second season. The pacing is weird, the visuals were dull, and I'm less interested in the story at this point (the premise of the first arc was what made it stand out to me)
  • Horimiya
    So far I see a lot of promise in this show. The art is very stylish, the pace is refreshing, and the story has potential. I hope it manages to strike a balance between fun and dramatic. Looking forwards to more
  • Yuru Camp△ Season 2
    More of the same stuff. The first season didn't leave any bold impression on me, but it's not like I expected anything groundbreaking given the humble premise. It's comfy and somewhat endearing. No complaints

So far, this season is shaping out to be promising altogether. I don't see myself picking up another show-- I'm pretty content with my selection thus far-- but I'll keep my options open.

Hello again folks! With a new season comes a new gift of shows unleashed upon the world. Some burning piles of trash, some unpolished gems, and every now and then a show that really gets you. For this 2021 season, I'm watching way too many shows as usual. This time around there are plenty of sequels to look forward and a few new shows. As for shows that stand out for me, I've got


  • Horimiya
    I always love to catch a good romance every season. I have an especially soft spot for shows that use the trope of hidden sides of people, so this show grew on me very quickly. Characters that pop and are just lovable. It's that wholesome goodness that really gets me. Only thing I'm sad about is that it'll only be 13 episodes.
  • Log Horizon S3
    Another show that hits one of my soft spots. Log Horizon had really great world building and I look forward to seeing more of the series.
  • Last Dungeon
    This show is kinda a standard season promise these days. Fantasy world with an overpowered protagonist except this protagonist thinks he's weak since his hometown is next to the final boss' dungeon. Gives off those kinda konosuba-esque with comedy as the main character comes to gain "common sense" along with several other characters fearing and fawning over him alike. Just one of those shows where I like to turn off my brain and roll with whatever is happening.


I'm also watching a ton of other shows like Dr.Stone, Reincarnated as a Slime, Mushoku Tensei, So I'm a Spider so What, Kai Byoui Ramune, Kemono Jihen, etc. Basically most of the seasonal stuff. Frankly a lot of first episodes so far have been alright. Only thing that's shined above the rest making me look forward to watching it next week is Horimiya so far. It'd be nice if we had an end of season discussion to see how opinions have changed too.

First Impressions

    Horimiya
    Honestly this might be my anime of the season. I've heard the manga goes downhill but that 1st episode felt so authentic. It starts out like every kinda rom-com with the popular girl and otaku cliche but it turns tails on you and shows you there's depth to the characters as people. The pacing was amazing for just one episode believe it or not. I've seen more out this anime in 23 minutes than the entire series of mundane rom-coms. Miyamura is my favorite so far but I love both characters and I hope to see even more!!

    Yakusoku no Neverland 2nd Season
    Sadly, I didn't feel the S1 thrills. The pacing is alright I guess but it's kinda just the little kids reacting to their surroundings and Emma and Ray planning; the chase scenes felt like a shounen action which doesn't work too well but the background art is decent. The 3-D tree chase scene looked wrong though. The CGI is a mixed bag cause the dragonflies looked good but the monster kinda just looked ugly to me.

    Hataraku Saibou!!
    As a bio(informatics) major, I have a huge bias and damn is this actually such a cute anime!! Even though there is blood flying, it's more wholesome than your typical moe girl anime tbh LOL; the world-building looks fantastic and the action scenes feel creative!! Even though half the characters are red, they don't abuse the color so your eyes aren't strained. Prepare to sit back and relax as you watch this :))

    Urasekai Picnic
    This one definitely has the most potential out of all the anime I've watched so far (other than Horimiya)!! Even though the worldbuilding and plot are yet to be explained from the 1st episode, I like the characters and the beautiful setting. The characters may not feel authentic but when you give the nervous, anxiety-filled troupe and reckless, trigger-happy type to female leads, it's different. You might call it a double standard, but keep in mind it's a shoujo ai. I'm not expecting Yagate Kimi ni Naru level romance but I want to see moreeee

    Jaku-Chara Tomozaki-kun
    Don't watch this. Both the characters are unlikeable. I watched this before Horimiya and I still felt this. There's a bunch of life mumbo jumbo and since the character designs are so plain and uninspired, the studio, Project No.9 btw (see what else they made...) spent their budget on the female lead's legs. I saw the OP right after and I can tell this is another harem anime with an otaku lead. Very uncreative.

The depths of seasonal hell is a pit no one can escape from. I watched many a first episode this past week, and sunk deeper and deeper.

Horimiya - I dunno, I don't really like romances. Wouldn't have picked it up if it wasn't watched for club. First episode was cute, but also felt very rushed. Like they're just montaging/timeskipping their entire relationship. Probably wouldn't keep up with it if it wasn't a club showing.

Kumo Desu ga, Nani ka? - Biased because I really like the source LNs. It's solid isekai with fun twist if you're into that. CGI kinda bad at points, especially for the monsters, but for the MC it's fine. Overall a solid adaptation so far.

Last Dungeon - Full name is way too long to write down here. Basically comedy in the same vein of One Punch Man, of super overpowered dude and people reacting to how OP he is except in generic fantasy land. It's ok. Sometimes funny, mediocre animation, somewhat endearing characters. Only problem is that just like OPM the joke's gonna be worn out real thin real quick. Unlike OPM, this anime doesn't really have much going for it outside of that joke.

Kemono Jihen - Pretty good supernatural detective thing. Standard detective goes out to solve cases done by youkai and monsters and stuff like that. First episode was a pretty solid hook. Definitely gonna keep watching.

Urasekai Picnic - Good sort of psychological thriller. Likeable characters and a very interesting premise. It's inspired by the novel Otherside Picnic, which inspired the Stalker games among other things. I kinda wish they went harder on the horror/mind fuck elements? Because the show's definitely capable of having solid horror elements, but it never goes hard enough to be really satisfying. More creepy than actually terrifying.

Ex-Arm - MASTERPIECE 10/10 NO OTHER ANIME CAN COMPETE

Wonder Egg Priority - Probably my favorite first episode. It has a very surreal, almost whimsical feel to it, even despite the heavier subject matter and horror elements. Reminds me of stuff by Ikuhara. Has alot of promise, and I hope it doesn't fuck it up.

Hortensia Saga - Why the fuck did I even watch this... Poorly animated hyper generic medieval fantasy anime that both tries too hard to be a serious, realistic drama and sticks to closely to its genre tropes. Apparently it's based off of a mobile game which makes alot of sense but even so, there's plenty of mobile game animes that manage to feel more original than this.

Vlad Love - Dumbass gag comedy about a girl with a blood donating fetish who picks up a vampire gf. One of those comedies that is incredibly stupid and revels in its dumbassery and makes you lose brain cells. And sometimes I just wanna lose brain cells. Also apparently it's by the director who did a bunch of old famous shit like ghost in the shell, Jin-Rou, Patlabor, and Blood? So that's a genre shift, I guess.

Back Arrow - Lets lose more braincells. Have a dumbass mecha with a setting that's a half feudal japan, half wild west, with hot blooded half naked mecha pilots shouting their convictions as they punch other mechs in the face all at a breakneck pace. Very reminiscent of stuff like GunxSword, which is very much a plus. Really enjoyable so far.

Project Scard: Praeter no Kizu - GoHands back at it again with another shitty original anime. From the masterminds behind the masterpiece Handshakers, it's here again. God-awful 3D backgrounds clashing with 2d characters, overproduced special effects, and garish filters everywhere. At the very least they're improving? The camerawork doesn't give me a headache, and the plot is now just boring instead of laughably stupid.

Idoly Pride - Idol anime except with a twist. The entire first episode was just to set up that singular twist to make it look distinct from other idol anime. I'm cautious about this, because it all depends on how much they use that twist, or if they'll just play the idol stuff completely straight with no deviation. It hasn't really gripped me so far, and the large amount of characters in the opening makes me even more wary.

Gekidol - Kinda interesting premise and sci-fi hooks sort of let down by hamfisted idol aspects. I feel like there's promise here though, because unlike Idoly Pride, the "twist" here is ingrained in every aspect in the show and isn't easily ignorable. Hopefully it goes to some interesting places.

Well that was alot of anime. This season is pretty decent, though obviously most people will be focusing on all the sequels. My personal top 3 picks: Wonder Egg Priority, Kemono Jihen and Back Arrow.

JUST KIDDING THIS SEASON FUCKING SUCKS THE ONLY ANIME THAT MATTERS IS EX-ARM BABY THE SAVIOR OF THE INDUSTRY FUCK EVERYTHING ELSE

Picked up Wonder Egg Priority-- the first episode was neat. Reminds me of Flip Flappers. The premise is different and the visuals stand out. The story itself has some heavy tones, which is bold but welcome. Seems promising enough!

It's an SoL comedy about a handful of girls in a rural town who mess around every episode

There's nothing about it that really stands out I just like it

Most shows are approaching the halfway point so I thought I would post an update on my thoughts on each of the shows that I'm watching for this season:

  • Shingeki no Kyojin: The Final Season -- Current score: 8+/9-/10
    This season has solidified Attack on Titan as one of my absolute favorite anime. When I first started watching the show 7 years ago in middle school, I never expected it to become something so profound. The way this season has managed to perfectly harness all the momentum the series has cultivated for so many years is nothing less than impressive. The SnK circlejerk is pretty rampant, but I am genuinely so engaged with this series and implore anyone interested in a dark Action/Mystery to check it out from the beginning. The events of the story are consistently captivating and for lack of a better phrase, hype as fuck. I'm aware that the last few manga chapters leading up to the conclusion have been pretty wild, but with how things are going now, I have faith that I will be satisfied.
  • Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Gou -- Current score: 6/10?
    This is still airing, I guess. With only a few more episodes until this new installment concludes, I have to wonder-- what was the point of this addition to the series? I was totally on board with Gou at the beginning-- the atmosphere was promising and the new art was charming. However, with how things are dragging on and on, I have my doubts that Gou will be able to reach the same level of quality as the original unless these last few episodes are ridiculously good. The biggest problem I have is that Gou is adding very little to the original formula despite having so much space to do so; even so, the few revelations that have been revealed have come across as terribly contrived. I'm still enjoying it, honestly, and I have faith because I like this series. However, the show is nearly over and I'm still trying to figure out exactly what Gou is trying to achieve.

    I have put this show on hold for now-- if I end up wanting to continue this series, I'll do so after the season airs. The first season was neat, but I can't honestly say that I'm too interested in how the series continues (especially not after the first episode of this season).
  • Horimiya -- Current score: 6/10
    Horiymiya is exactly what it set out to be. It's a fresh, colorful high school romance. The characters are fun, the art is pleasant, and the romance is faithful to some of my own experiences as a teenager. It's nothing extraordinary, but it's definitely more enjoyable than many other anime of the same variety
  • Yuru Camp△ Season 2 -- Current score: 5/10
    It's more Yuru Camp. No complaints other than the fact that there has hardly been any proper camping.
  • Wonder Egg Priority -- Current score: 5/10
    I don't really know how to feel about this show yet. On one hand, it stands out quite a bit this season because of its original premise and sharp, vivid animation. On the other hand, it's trying so desperately to be something extraordinary and profound that it's kind of nauseating. When watching Wonder Egg Priority, I'm constantly just wishing I was watching Flip Flappers or Madoka Magica instead-- shows that have (relatively) similar substance but are light years ahead in presentation and execution. The cast is diverse and each character has depth, but come off as forced because of their lack of charm. The dream worlds, monsters, statues, and vendors are cool on paper but sadly fall kind of flat in the show-- the ideas are there, but they're implemented in the most uninspired ways possible. Wonder Egg Priority is a store brand pretentious anime. It's not bad, but it's not great or special.
  • Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu 2nd Season Part 2 -- Current Score: 5-/10
    I am admittedly not a fan of Re:Zero to begin with. I watched the first season when it aired a few years ago and despite my attempts to like the show, I was not impressed. I felt like the only reason Re:Zero gets away with terrible writing and every trope in the book is because of waifus. Anyways, fast forward to current year. I noticed how astoundingly high the rating for this season is and I decided I want to give it another shot-- I rewatched the first season, binged the second, and caught up to air. My conclusion: Re:Zero is still exactly the same show it ever was and still suffers from the same flaws. Instead of expanding on the promising aspects of the first season, the second season goes in a whole new direction out of nowhere... because. The events of Re:Zero all fall under three categories:

    1) Trauma porn. For some reason, Re:Zero thinks that making things fall apart dramatically is automatically profound. However, because of the nature of the show, this has lost all meaning since /our guy/ Subaru will just tough it out and try again. However, Return by Death has absolutely no consequences anymore. No more mental break, "Call of the Witch" doesn't play anymore-- it's just respawn and move on. There are absolutely no stakes, and anyone who thinks otherwise has been fooled by an illusion.
    2) Wish granting. Without spoiling anything, I think that the only reason part 2 of season 2 is so highly rated is because of blatant wish granting to make up for every time something bad happens.
    3) Random nonsense.

    Unfortunately, I am cursed by a glimmer of hope that Re:Zero will end up being good to keep watching. I will concede that this season is my favorite so far, but only because of Emilia's trial.

What are you guys still watching this season? Any new shows to pick up halfway through?

I'm still watching Redo of Healer, but it's more for the memes than because it's good. I've definitely seen worse though.

Shows I'm continuing:

  • Kumo desu ga, Nani ka? - Still a biased LN shitter. A pretty solid adaptation, dodgy CG aside. If you aren't an isekai dude this probably won't change your mind, but if you are, then this is probably my favorite isekai story that avoids alot of the pitfalls other isekais fall for.

  • Horimiya - I don't like it. It feels so melodramatic despite nothing really dramatic or tense really happening. The direction is just so in-your-face and overly intense for a fairly grounded and uneventful story. Would have dropped a long time ago if not a club showing.

  • Last Dungeon - Why am i still watching this it's like barely chuckleworthy and the joke has already been stretched thin is this what anime does to your brain

  • Kemono Jihen - Still very pog supernatural thriller thing. Fun characters and interesting scenarios. Despite being fairly episodic so far, it has been consistently entertaining and charming.

  • Urasekai Picnic - My biggest complaint from initial impressions still stands: this kinda looks bad and doesn't go hard enough on the horror. Clearly needed more time, and maybe a stronger horror director. Still unique enough to be watchable, though.

  • Vlad Love - My brain has rotted. I think I enjoyed this but I can't tell with brain fluid dripping out of my ears. If you wish to experience some good brainrot, I'd reccommend.

  • Back Arrow - Man, this anime is just fun. Feels like Gurren Lagaan a bit. It's loud, kinda stupid, but it just has alot of heart and passion that carries it to being legitimately entertaining.

  • Idoly Pride - Another idol anime that falls for the trap of introducing way too many characters to care about. Please stop and actually develop what you have. Music is actually really nice though, compared to the usual idol music fare.

  • Wonder Egg Priority - This is starting to feel like a whole lot of style over substance. It looks super colorful and wonderfully animated, but is as subtle as a brick and has been glacially paced. I don't mind episodic stuff, but each episode has been very similar in premise, with little twist to the formula of fight monster representing some type of trauma or bullying, maybe get powerup, defeat it, rinse and repeat. At this point I'm just waiting for something interesting that'll shake things up.

  • Gekidol - Unironically my favorite anime of the season so far. I don't know how. I don't know why. Everything about this has been an utterly insane and unique ride. We got fantastical sci-fi theater, exploitation of underaged girls, malicious androids, unhinged schizo MC, actual yuri, not that weak-ass yuribait shit, on top of some really strong directing and cinematography. I do wish the animation was better, but overall it's still been a fantastic and utterly bizarre anime.

Honestly this has been a pretty enjoyable season. I didn't mention any sequels since I wanted to focus on the new anime, but there are alot of them on top of the interesting stuff I already listed.

Totally reasonable, I think some of my other friends dropped it as well for similar reasons. You're right-- it's disproportionately dramatic to the point where things are hard to take seriously. Personally, I'd rate it closer to a flat 5/10 at this point. However, I honestly do see a few of my own high school relationships in Horimiya which is kind of endearing. At the end of the day, I'll give it to Horimiya for at least being a nice palette cleanser for me in regards to the high school romance genre. It's nothing special at all but I don't dislike it.

As you noted, it's a lot of style over substance, but I don't even find myself enjoying the visual delivery. It's saturated and hard to take seriously. This show has been most frequently been compared to Madoka Magica and Flip Flappers, but both of those shows have such distinct and mesmerizing imagery. I feel like Wonder Egg Priority consists of a lot of flashy animation devoid of any style or nuance. Regardless, the writing feels super cheap to me. Why let the viewer develop independent thought when you can shove themes and sob stories down their throats? Also, I couldn't agree with you more-- the formulaic approach to each episode is probably the biggest thing holding back the show. We're over the halfway point and I don't see any sign of innovation (don't even get me started on the pets). Probably a 5/10 for me right now-- I definitely see why people are enjoying it so much but it's been nothing but a let down for me from the second episode on.

Totally reasonable, I think some of my other friends dropped it as well for similar reasons. You're right-- it's disproportionately dramatic to the point where things are hard to take seriously. Personally, I'd rate it closer to a flat 5/10 at this point. However, I honestly do see a few of my own high school relationships in Horimiya which is kind of endearing. At the end of the day, I'll give it to Horimiya for at least being a nice palette cleanser for me in regards to the high school romance genre. It's nothing special at all but I don't dislike it.

As per tradition, a short summary of my experiences with this season.
Sorry for the lack of elaboration, this season thoroughly drained me.

  • Shingeki no Kyojin: The Final Season -- Expected score: 8+/10; Final score: 8-/10
    The first half of the season blew me away, but things start to get a little messy towards the second half. I ended up binge-reading the manga as soon as the show finished airing in anticipation for Part 2, and all I can say is that an absolute shitshow awaits and I have no idea how it will be adapted.
  • Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Gou -- Expected score: 7/10; Final score: 6-/10
    I was really excited from the start, but ultimately I did not like the direction this new entry took. I have my doubts that Sotsu will deliver, but we can hope.
  • Horimiya -- Expected score: 6/10; Final score: 5-/10
    Started out pretty sweet and fresh, but Horimiya lost a lot of focus (and engagement from me) as side characters began to take over. Pretty average show.
  • Yuru Camp△ Season 2 -- Current score: Expected score: 5/10; Final score: 5/10
    Camping. I didn't like it as much as the first season, but it was hardly any different. Nothing to complain or praise, really.
  • Wonder Egg Priority -- Expected score: 6/10; Final score: 4/10
    I don't have the energy to explain why I did not like this show. All I can say is that I have lost faith in original productions.
  • Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu 2nd Season Part 2 -- Expected score: 6/10; Final score: 4/10
    Well, that's enough Re:Zero for me. I can now confidently say that I still don't like this series.
  • Non Non Byori Nonstop -- Expected score: 6+/10; Still watching!
    I binged the first two seasons over break and am slowly consuming the most recent season. This is probably the best thing I have watched recently.
