----------------------------------------
This arc was a classic squash gamble showing us how badass Zero has become. We had an arrogant and entitled jerk and every time he thought he knew what was up, Zero wanted him to think that, Joseph Joestar style. It's cool and a way to start out part 2 with strong impressions.

Almost unnecessarily, Kyousuke got background and character development. Similar to GtK's Saijou, his vice was his gaudy attitude seeing others as below him, but from the very beginning Zero respected his skills. Through this gamble between two kings with their devoted follower believing in their leader with their all, we were given a reason to root for Kyousuke. His dream inflated his ego and corrupted him, as if it were all that mattered, but he still had a dream and put in the work. He appreciated his father's support and faith. Losing in the manner he did should have humbled him a little, seeing the errors of his ways. He has pride as a golfer and that came through as he took accountability. An aspect which I call functionally unnecessary but was crucial in making this arc interesting. Otherwise it'd be a simple beatdown.

This leads to the topic of kings which even Zero is going by, a 'true gambling king'! Aligned, Suezaki belittled the 'peasants' and called himself noble with a comedic touch. There is some irony in the fact that Zero even remarked that Zaizen's gambles turned him into the man he is, they in a way made him 'worthy', cautious, strong, unflinching.

I find the topic somewhat troubling. There's a notion of the talented, the worthy, the kings. People surround those who can actually make a difference and succeed in their ambitions and goals. Suezaki or the righteous thieves, Shirube's initial gang, Kyousuke's father. There's nothing wrong with this, in fact, it's realistic. There are talented leaders, good and bad, but there's something about Zero which makes me feel futile. Could anyone become a king? Or do I need to wait for one to support. I could be going way too far, but when Fukumoto's ideas are often empowering to me, Zero, at the moment, feels somewhat disempowering. I don't think this is the point Zero is making, there are many hopeful ideas within it, but the king's Zero and Shirube feel mythical and necessary to succeed in a way that outside of the shounen context feels impossible. This is the idea I'm most interested in pursuing.

Edit: My friend reminded me that Zero is far more attainable than I make him out to be, I am just as bad as Yuuki here. He is shown to faulter and there is at least one man who shares all of his wits, Fukumoto. Despite being unbelievably strong, courageous, compassionate, he breaks down his methods and encourages his peers to follow along. He inspires others to be on his level, and even if they can't, he sees value in them regardless. Seeing the characters we relate with subjegating themselves to Zero with the narrative of the kings/followers/worthless rubbed me the wrong way but now I can see it differently. As in Zero is giving us the tools to be a king ourselves and validation if we fail as long as we do our best.
