I don't understand why so many folks in reviews, threads, comment sections, etc. complain about the lack of "story"

Or the story being meandering or going all over the place. That's kind of the point. It's not an A - Z plot. The first genre listed on MAL is literally "Slice of Life". It's a slow burn about the characters steadily get more comfortable living with each other, more comfortable in their own skin and in expressing themselves, to one another, and how they relate to the world around them. Just as sometimes in life, there are periods of advancement, stasis or stagnation, and even reversals in that development. Not everything follows a neat and linear arc of constant progression leading up to a sudden change or battle.

This show seems to have proven itself to be a lot more methodical and nuanced. That's what makes it feel so vibrant and alive to me that it's not a clean plot-based sequence of events which feels like moving through levels of a video game, but more like an examination of some people's lives. And that's why all the whimsical and fantastical moments meant to inspire awe, the comedic moments, the gruesome or horrific moments, the melancholy somber moments, and just the quiet and peaceful, contemplative and reflective moments, feel incredibly natural and in place, never out of it, and not tonally jarring at all to me.

Anyway, obviously everyone is going to have different tastes, but I just find it baffling that this is one of the most consistent criticisms of the show since it seems to come from a mindset of those who dislike Slice of Life stories, even though that's the very first genre tag listed, or those who erroneously believe SoLs all must follow a formula of being strictly one thing, like pure comedies, pure iyashikei, etc. which seems out of sync with the actual synopsis of the show.

Read Stark's reviews, ignore the haters.

If you hate something, you get easy upvotes. As easy as that.

EDIT: TakamakiJoker's review is pretty good, too.
