----------------------------------------
As Akagi noted when Ten walked in, he’s always got a good look in his eyes. His spark is always burning, he lived a different life than Akagi, but he too threw away normalcy; living as a hippie, he threw out his successes, and he even threw away so-called common sense to help those he wants to help. He is alive. Therefore, there shouldn’t be too much Akagi can say about Ten which won’t also apply to himself. Which means, Ten is a great window into Akagi, this is the time we can finally have him, potentially, speak about himself on a deeper level.

After being so quiet, and being as strong as he is, and caring so much about others, it made me eager to see what Ten's approach would be. Yet, so far I have to imagine it’s somewhat similar to the approach Ken took which was cut earlier. He threw the arguments I’ve heard before at him. He’s a coward, giving me a surprised chuckle along with Akagi. That he’ll stay the same, even if he’s taken care of by others, and moreover, it’s no different than what Akagi says himself about going back to the beginning in the cycle of life, it’s a step where he approaches being a baby again. He even threw out the possibility of medical progress, something I had to take into account when answering similar questions in the biomedical ethics class I took.

But Akagi shut them all down. First stating that if he can’t live on his own, if his life is dependent on the hands of doctors and machinery, he couldn’t take it. His mind would be as if it were half-asleep, making me realize the similarity of that notion to being half-dead, inhibiting his freedom and his very life. This also made me think about Buraiden Gai and Gai’s focus on independence, as he is already a character I feel is eerily similar to Akagi in many ways. Regardless, he closed the chapter off by speaking on the ‘inarguable position that people have to live’. He questioned it, the purpose of keeping someone alive against their own wishes, ultimately suggesting that to prioritize these things, life over the self, is something to be critical of.
